Will the DS/PSP lesson teach Sony that better Graphics Power doesn't always = good?

Perhaps Sony should've learned something from the past 9 Nintendo competitors in the handheld arena who ALSO tried to beat Nintendo with better graphics, nicer screens and less battery capacity.

PSP is doing alright and all as is the DS, and it's far too early and all too unnecessary to decide a winner.

I don't recall seeing anything in the TOS that mentioned 'parody topics.'

If so, and if this is deemed as a 'parody topic' then lock the thread.

You're going to be banned, and since the damnable evidence is in the title of the thread itself, there is NOTHING you can do about it. :lol

Who would win in a fight: Link from lttp or Mario of SSBM? REMEMBER: WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MARIO FROM SUPER SMASH BROS MELEE not SSB. Cool, let the games begin. Oh, and Link cannot use magic.

FF7's an OLD game based on OLD technology that couldn't power a mechanical heart from 1942. But even if it could power said heart, the best wrestler of all time, Bret hart, would make said heart have a HART ATTACK. OWNED.

BTW, your sales figures for FFXI are out of date as of 15 minutes ago. Again, I win. (Thanks Norm Scott :lol )

EGM? More like EGMsucks! LOL!! Yes waiter, my friend here -TeukunoRobby- won't be needing your help tonight. You see, he's already been served. BEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW*

*the sound of your ego deflating like a pin poking into a fat man on fire at a Kiss concert!!

ne ways, let me rebut your points:
1. Link's skin is sharklike and will cut enemies just by touching him
2. Link has an aura of power
3. Link is hot
4. See number one (holy fuck I'm clever)

BTW, Gamepro 4 lyfe. Try taking Gamepro's name and cleverly twisting it like I did to EGM. That's right. You CAN;T.

This is a legitimate thread, people.

And my answer to the top is a hesitant "yes".

:| PS2 and PSX were both underpowered compared to the competition. If anyone, it's Nintendo that needs to learn a lesson about technology.

Yeah, the DS should've totally had the power of 32x instead of PSX. Perhaps they will learn from their mistakes with the DS2.

Oh god, this is a parody topic and those usually get immediately locked. Just because a few people are having STUPID fun with it doesn't mean you have to take it seriously.

Fine I'll address the original question presented in this thread and discontinue my shenanigans.

You are forgetting that no other competitor has offered a fantastic lineup of software one top of an excellently backed and persuasive marketing campaign. I do realize it's slow to start but word of mouth is also another key feature not to mention that the Sony name itself will do wonders in selling the unit. All previous efforts, while great, were all met with the same previous problem: Nintendo's massive library, quality software (debatable of course but people usually point to that), and fantastic name recognition. Sony has the chance to fiercely fight back on all accounts so yes I think they know what they're doing.

The TurboGrafix portable had great software and so did the Gamegear, arguably much better than the Gameboy's lineup.

In fact I think the Gamegear did pretty well against the Gameboy for some time.

We should have a "NO FUCKING PORTABLES" week. any thread about portables or mentions of portable systems for a whole week, if you do you get banned for the rest of that week.

Yes, please. Or at least a "no rampant unsubstantiated speculation," week. It's cool if you're gonna discuss the future, but a few facts would be nice. Until the PSP's established itself in North America, I don't see how threads like these are worthwhile.

I'm pretty sure the Game Gear did well against the Gameboy and I agree the TurboGrafix had great software (IIRC).

Unfortunately we still go back to points 1 and 3, the massive library and name recognition.

Times change however, thanks to Playstation games are more mainstream and with the PSP being targeted towards a new market for handhelds it will have a much stronger chance than any previous competitor. The market is also much larger than it was in the early to mid 90's, there's a far great chance of success in the market now thanks to the GBA's explosive popularity.

If you do that and any member chooses to post a topic anyways I want to reserve the right to act as stupid as I want in the thread without any repercussions. ;)

not before i do.

Right now is an excellent time for Sony to have released the PSP (in the US anyway). The DS is still waiting for post-launch big titles, so here comes the PSP to drive some sales away.

I think Sony did learn from the lesson of the other portables. They let the early adopters do their thing, and then when the release drought appeared, they hop on stage.

You're forgetting that aside from the better graphics, the PSP is more than a game system with the movies/music stuff.

The real question is Will the DS/PSP lesson teach Nintendo that gimmicks don't always = good? GBA2 and Revolution will tell..(the fact that they are already working on a GBA so soon is hilarious though).

I can't wait until E3 when we can move onto more important things, like bitching over next-gen spec sheets or dissecting the Mario 128 trailer frame by frame.

It's far to early to tell who's going to win out. One thing I do know is that DS won't last nearly as long as PSP. PSP is a capable machine that could very well last 5 years, like a traditional console. DS on the other hand will be superseeded by GBA 2 in a year or two (fuck the 3rd tier BS). For me PSP is the better investment. Also note that PSX wasn't a sales monster at first, and that Sony isn't afraid to do some price slashing to move units (PSX dropped $100 in a year, when N64 came out). Even with Sony's pedigree, this being their first portable launch it's like the PSX launch, you can't expect a sales monster off the start like the PS2. People don't know what to expect from a Sony handheld, plus they've been trained by Nintendo's previous portable to expect low price points and decent tech...PSP changes both of those, and the price is odd putting to the casual gamers as they think that its power will be comparable to Nintendo's offerings (before they see it for themselves) and think that Sony is taking them for a ride with the high price point. It's going to take a while for the general public to realize the advantages of the PSP, and why the price is what it is...whether they'll accept it and buy it in droves at a high price premium is still up in the air, but I'm sure it'll help sales in the future (word of mouth is a strong sales booster). This battle is far from over, as Sony's first entry into the portable market, they hit a homerun with the PSP hardware...now it's up to their marketing and pricing structure (for hardware and games, GH line in particular) to do the rest.
