Will this be the defining holiday season for Xbox One?

That people (who aren't fans of either system) will buy an Xbox system if it's priced the same as or below the PS equivalent and offers the same or better services.
But if the Xbox is more expensive than the PS it won't sell as much.
360 sold so well/ X1 so badly for that reason.

I really believe a no kinect, no DRM X1 would have been extremly close to the PS4 in sales if it launched that way.

Samsung will learn the same lesson, when the S6 is really more expensive than the IPhone 6.

The only reason the 360 did so well (only in the US and UK, it got outsold everywhere else) is because it released with a year head start.
The playstation brand is way bigger then Xbox.

I think your problem is that you're not using '>' correctly. It's the only logical explanation and why so many guys are calling you out on it.

Ohhhhh crap. Didn't even notice! What an important typo.
I was already wondering why people that have the same opinion as me are coming at me.
Will fix that NOW.

Fixed it.

Didn't they just have a holiday season with a lower price and more exclusives? Poor MS, their best hope is now other games getting delayed.

Ehhh, maybe.
We still need to wait till E3 and see what they will deliver with QB being rumored to be delayed...

I think as it stands now we will get:

Forza 6
Gigantic
Halo 5 Guardians
Tomb Raider

The wildcards are:

Quantum Break
Gears Remaster
Rare Game
Fable Legends
(may be summer release)

Of coarse there are a bunch of indy games too like:

Inside
Cuphead
Superhot
Goat Simulator

ect.

Here is that post. There are two variables cheaper/same price and better/equal services, one of them has to be in MS favor.
And believe and stating as a fact are really different to me.

Okay this has to be a language barrier issue (I'm assuming your first language is German), the way your post is written you are saying that either option (same price or lower price) would result in people choosing Xbox. The same goes for the rest of the sentience when you state equal or better services. The way it's structured it's not clear that your saying the xbox has to either have a better price or better "stuff." Also the "believe" in you post in in a completely different paragraph, the part I'm talking about is stated like a fact.

Edit:

Damn, that sure does help to clear things up! Oh and as an aside, I was stationed in Germany for a little while, I have to say it's such a beautiful country (the part I saw anyways).

Hey, yeah I think you are right. I messed up anyway, the whole confusion got started because I misplaced the ">". I meant PS>Xbox not the other way around.
And yes I meant people will "consider" an Xbox system and not "buy for sure".

I aplogogize for any confusion and time wasted.

EDIT:
Glad you liked it here!
I grew up in West-Berlin pretty near the US Army Station. And my Grandpa has always told me about the "Lüftbrücke".
I would have grown up without any gaming systems if it wasn't for the US troops. They did not have that in East Germany.
Thanks for your service and that of your veterans!

With most of that coming in November with the gap declining in December as well as Ps4 now leading again in Jan and Feb so far. Do people really not count consoles sold Jan through October? MS didn't win the year just because they won Nov and Dec only in the US. Does this happen in any other field no team wins a game because they scored more points in the 4th quarter or the second half. You win by having the most over all points. All those consoles sold before the holidays are people buying games earlier and subscribing to services that much longer. Their great strategy left MS with a console gap of 550K for 2014 and growing in 2015 when the lead was only 100K in 2013. No matter how you spin it Sony increased their lead in NA over XB1 in comparison to 2013 and thats with out a price drop.

MS knows they lost already. PS4 won. It is as simple as that. They know it, we know it, everyone knows it.

MS is now trying to mitigate the damage. To prevent a huge gap from getting even bigger. Right now they are playing the cards they have. They are done in Japan, Europe is a lost cause, Asia is probably done for them too. Right now their best areas are in NA and UK.

MS is not going to start releasing high profile games in the middle of the year. It gives them a small boost relative to the MASSIVE boost they'll get in Nov/Dec. They'll get beat by Sony throughout the year, then minimize that damage in Nov/Dec.

I mean, look at Titanfall. Just look at it.

The PS4 beat them in Titanfall month. It was a complete AAA waste to move hardware. Titanfall in holiday would have probably moved way more systems.

But I guess those games were not mainstream enough.....
(and also, Destiny PS4 marketing really hurt them)

Forza Horizon is not as popular as Forza Motorsport, and SSO was a new IP that appeals to a more niche crowd unfortunately. Also the whole MCC troubles likely hurt them.

This holiday, they have their FM series with (FM6), a mainline Halo game (Halo 5), an exclusive tomb raider game which is a big franchise (RotTR), and so by default they should have a "better holiday" than last, BUT there is still more games coming that we don't know about for sure, so we should wait until E3 before speculating on how good their Holiday will be.

But yes, this could be X1's defining holiday, just like 2007 was a defining year for the 360 with Halo 3, Bioshock, and Cod4 MW.

That's really cool actually, I hope to go back sometime soon, and bring my wife with me this time. Plus this time I wont have a trip to certain desert looming over my time there.

Anyways, is there any reason people believe something gears related will come out this year? All I've seen were tweets suggesting that no collection is in the works.

No.

They have not "lost" in UK/US (at least not in their minds) they are going to do everything they can to catch up this year, just like they did last year.

Also, Titanfall was not a waste just because they lost the month. They lost the month because their console was $100 more with mandatory Kinect, and still had a lot of backlash and hate from launch.

Titanfall saved the X1 from suffering the same fate as the Wii U did in the months after launch period, and moved a ton of units from February-April.

Also, they aren't just moving everything to Holday because they have "given up" on jan-oct. months. They can't just magically make their developers finish their games early, and so they will come out when they are ready.

Next Spring they will likely have a much better lineup....I think Scalebound is rumored, and if QB gets delayed, it may be spring 2016.

Lineup looks solid to me this holiday. Best exclusive lineup by far. Hopefully the multiplats are closer in terms of performance to the PS4 than last year on average.

Cool, I might pick up an X1 this holiday if they do some crazy deals again. I'm sure Gears will be crazy when it comes out.

OT: For sure

If all Microsoft have are "defining holiday seasons", then they're going to suffer once the PS4 comes down in price.

The exclusive line up may be better, but it's been better for a while and it hasn't really made a massive difference.

"Defining".

The console is already dead in the whole world but the US.

And it's not even doing that good there.

Persona 5, a possible bloodborne expansion/DLC, maybe another game (either quantic dreams or hell maybe a project like last guardian) ?

And last holiday microsoft had a wonderful line up.

Halo 5 only is quite terrible compared to sunset, forza and MCC.
how long does localization for persona games take? i sure would love to play it here in the U.S this year.

If I find it later I'll post all the times the devs said the English version of P5 is due out this year. If ism not mistaken they've said it multiple times so far.

Xbox One has Tomb Raider and Halo 5 all to itself for Q4 so I would say so. Especially if there are Assassins Creed Victory co marketing and bundles.

Isn't Elite Dangerous out this holiday? I could see MS making a physical copy of it for holiday

Maybe niche, but I think it would sell decently on XB1

It's a shame that these next gen systems apparently took so many developers by surprise. The PS4 launched in 2013, but won't receive its first MAJOR exclusive until three years later? There needs to be better management or something.

so is it reasonable to believe persona 5 won't even release in america this year?

Just as reasonable as believing that as of 2 months ago, Uncharted 4 and Zelda U will come out this year.

Until a game goes gold, there's always the possibility of delay. Even for games that no one blinks an eye about it being annualised, like AssCreed or Call of Duty.

There's always a 1% chance.

With the news of Zelda for Wii U not reaching it's 2015 goal for release and Uncharted 4 being delayed until 2016, both PS4 and Wii U both lost their big holiday exclusive game to next year, while Halo 5, Xbox One's big holiday exclusive is set to launch this year. With neither PS4 or Wii U having a big exclusive for the holiday, could this be the holiday season for the Xbox One to really shine?

PS4 didn't lost their big exclusive for this holiday, unless Ratchet & Clank got delayed to 2016.

But yes, Microsoft Studios has a nice line-up of games this holiday (Forza 6, Halo 5, Quantum Break, Rise of the Tomb Raider. All four games look very interesting).

I don't know why some people place so much emphasis on holiday line-ups though, to me it would be a bit more convenient if publishers, especially Microsoft Studios, could spread their games throughout the year a bit more. The holidays are usually already crowded with games, so imo they shouldn't oversaturate it.

Uncharted 4 will be releasing 3 years after TLoU, which is nowadays, fair game in terms of AAA development time.

Unless your definition of better management was to cancel the PS3 version of TLoU, and pretend it's built-from-the-grounds-up as PS4 game last year with the Remastered.

January to August is preseason.

You don't play your starters in preseason.

What's a 'MAJOR' exclusive? Another arbitrary definition to decide what counts for "list wars"? :p

Everybody said Titanfall would move massive amounts of hardware... Everybody said, no people are just waiting for a titanfall bundle... Titanfall came and that month they sold less consoles.
Doesn't mean a thing. I went for xbox over ps4 @ launch because I wanted a titanfall box. Without tf xbox launch would have been even worse imo

Where is this idea that a Gears collection is coming this year coming from? M.S. already announced that it ain't happening.

I think it's disingenous to assume that Titanfall didn't move a shitload of XB1s just because it lost to PS4. Titanfall did ridiculously well for a new 'somewhat exclusive' IP.

It's just that $100 price-advantage + Playstation brand is a bigger system seller than Titanfall.

And that XB1 would had done a LOT worse if it didn't have Titanfall.

If the ps4 goes 299 then i dont know what ms can do about it. I guess 249 xbone with halo 5 and 2 more games and a giftcard or something like that. I dont know if thats even enough to win against 299 ps4.

Define "dead"

Halo five will sell more than all three of those games combined.
Also they have Forza 6, and Tomb Raider this year.....

But how low can they keep going though? They've already lowered the price to as low as ~$300 in the first year, and most of us can reasonable assume that Sony will be lowering the PS4 to $300 sometime this year. Is MS really going to go to $250 to counter? $200? It would be absolutely crazy to see the Xbox receive a 50% (or more) price reduction in two years, especially when the 360's price had only been cut $50 from it's original price in that same time span.

I mean I know Microsoft can afford it, but continuous fire sales are not a good way to build momentum (they're actually counter-productive), it's not sustainable.

Oh and Scalebound, like ALL Platinum games not named Metal Gear Rising, isn't going to do anything. It will be a great supplemental niche title that does add value, but it's not going to move consoles by any great amount.

Am I seeing list warriors using indie games to prop up XB1's lacking game schedule here? What a difference a year makes :p

Forza won't sell much? Lol

Last Forza game didn't do so well, so it's hardly unreasonable to believe this year's game could meet the same fate.

Imo last Xmas was their defining Holiday.

4 Halo games in one package, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, ACU and AC3 free with consoles $50 to $100 cheaper than the competition which had no price cut to speak of, and their defining AAA pushed to 2015 (The Order).

This time around, the competition will have a price cut (99% chance), MGS V bundles, will have something like BB+TLOU and LBP3+Knack in bundles, and if you think UC4 gets delayed 8 months before the Holidays without Sony having secured some AAAs ...

My only fear is that they resorted to fight fire with fire and bought 3rd party AAA exclusives like TR... Which would suck.

"Rise of the Tomb Raider" is a multi-platform game, also out for the Xbox 360, so the Xbox One doesn't have that game "all to itself".

I think MS is quite happy to keep selling every month. For the most part they don't give a shit what Sony sells. Their job is to maximize their sales and then have each one of those units keep generating more sales and revenue. The mentality in here that they are watching the sales like we do is wrong.

They have internal sales numbers and trends. They can watch the market change real time. They also have to plan these holiday seasons years in advance. They give almost zero shits what Sony or Nintendo do.

I would even venture a guess and say the people that work at these companies own the competition consoles too. Unlike most commenters in this thread.

I hope this is a defining season for both consoles, but to keep on topic, with what we know so far, Xbox One is going to have to great titles. With E3 very close, the gaps will hopefully be closed and it will make for some incredible games. Talking about non-exclusives, Mad Max and Metal Gear Solid V being in September already makes the final four months extremely interesting right out of the gate, and that's before we see things like Halo 5, Forza 6, and Rise of the Tomb Raider come out.

But really, I hope there's a Rare game this fall. Even if it's a digital Battletoads, that's cool, but a substantial game from them would make me very, very happy.
