Will we ever have shields?

Or is it just pure science-fiction? Is it even realistic to think of getting shields such as in Star Trek, or is it just simply an impossible task?

Smells faintly of rancid stilton.
If we are going to have anything from Star Trek it better be the Transporter system, or before we get shields, shouldnt we have a ship like the Enterprise or something first...

And I still waiting on Hooverboards.... :(

A couple of old fogies were mentioning force fields on a couple of the news shows after 9/11

I'm sure there is someway to harness electromagnetivity, pure energy (something like lightening), maybe iron or some metal and enhance it to where it "blocks" objects from entering or leaving, while still being somewhat see through

To get shields "like Star Trek"? According to their definitions of the capabilities, probably not. In Quant we spent a week actually talking about 'theoretical applications of theoretical science' and there were two ways discussed that 'shields' could be created.

The first involved worm hole theory and warping space-time around the ship. This is as 'possible' as the ability to warp space time.

The second involved emission of a charged 'cold' plasma field. Back in 94 there were people doing work in this area and apparently had some 'success' but I really care much after I got out of the class.

I was just thinking about stuff like this a while ago and I had hundreds of physics related questions...but I don't know of anyone who's done a lot of physics at Uni...and I didn't want to post the questions here because they are as dumb as Hell...but here goes: :p :p !!!

Do photons have mass? I thought they did...

If so...is there a measurable amount of photon density?

Is there a way to collect photons or will they forever bounce at the same speed?

And finally...what are photons? hehe j/k

Photons do not have mass....

I don't recall any way to 'collect' or 'catch' them, but to detect them 'tunneling'.

The topic of matter transporters came up a couple nights ago in an alchohol-fueled conversation.

Grandson: Come on Grandma!
Grandmother: I've been taking the space bus to Mars since i was a little girl -- an hour won't kill me.
Grandson: But Grandma, we're gonna start my birthday party in five minutes!
Grandmother: ...

Grandmother steps on transmitter platform, transmitter detects her presence and begins to work.

Connection timed out.
