Huh? Why would they remove one of their own shows from a streaming service? Did they get roped into some sort of bullshit deal where they have to pay just to LIST the show, regardless if anyone watches?

If so, and this is the way the writers want it (to be paid just for a show to be available, not based on actual viewership) then we are gonna see a hellstorm of stuff getting culled from streamers. The old syndication model was predicated on bulk buying long runs of shows that A. had an inital run of at least moderate success, B. an audience that COULD NOT WATCH the initial run, and C. limited other options. If streamers can't fatten their back catalogue at low cost then they really have no choice but to move to a "limited time engagement" model which will CRUSH them as they have really no way to advertise that stuff to viewers and quite frankly most of the stuff they create just isn't good for that model anyway.

This is definitely the beginning of the end of streaming services as we know them and is gonna result in another wave of acquisitions as the little players have no choice but to sell and the big players become desperate to get any kind of hit the maintain a subscriber base. My money is on Apple buying up studios wholesale as they have the deepest pockets.

Yeah, original shows created specifically for Disney+ being removed is really weird. I watched a couple of them with my daughter, Big Shot was pretty good.

Disney is the latest media company to purge content from its streaming platforms in a cost-cutting measure as the industry is rethinking costs and strategy in that arena with a renewed focus on profitability. Warner Bros. Discovery removed a slew of series from HBO Max, with AMC and Showtime also undergoing a similar scale back.

why though?
isn't all ready made so getting rid of it saves money how?
or is it they cant be assed to cancel them outright so just hiding them so they slip from Memory?

So who decides which shows should get the boot? Bean counters, mostly, who consider the cost of carrying library content based on how much is paid toward residuals, participations and royalties. That is weighed against viewership and a title’s ability to lure more subscribers — like The Office on Peacock, for example — and create less churn. Ahead of Showtime dumping titles, Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Showtime and Paramount Media, said that “we will divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10% of our views.”

That describes the vast majority of series that have been taken off streaming for write-off purposes. With the exception of Westworld, most of the removed titles were short-lived, having been canceled after one or two seasons. Westworld, in contrast, ran for four seasons but was very expensive, with HBO still reportedly on the hook for paying hundreds of millions of dollars when the decision was made to take the series off HBO Max as costs are amortized over time. (For HBO/HBO Max parent Warner Bros. Discovery, which set the tone for the current streaming content removals, there was an additional incentive, a one-time restructuring charge the company could take in the year after the merger to reset valuations.)

“They look at the quantity of eyeballs watching, when and how long and if that title somehow plays into the subscriber deciding to stay or not cancel a subscription,” explained one longtime business affairs exec about the selection process. “They may also look at the quality of the eyeballs. Maybe it’s a demo that would be better served by putting the title on an AVOD (advertiser-based on demand) or FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) platform and monetize it by getting ad revenue.”

That’s definitely what happened with WBD shows that were yanked off HBO Max. Westworld, along with The Nevers and F-Boy Island will join The Roku Channel in the spring through Warner Bros-branded channels, while Fox Corp-owned Tubi will launch 14 WB-branded channels and 225 titles on its platform. Westworld, Raised By Wolves and F-Boy Island are among them. (WBD also is exploring launching its own FAST service.)

While airing on a FAST channel may not be as sexy as streaming on a platform that carries reruns of Game of Thrones and The Sopranos, it still brings in revenue. That leads some industry observers to speculate that other streamers, including Netflix, may consider exploiting FAST channel distribution for shows that cost hundreds of millions to produce and are currently sitting in libraries gathering dust (and almost no eyeballs).

Ending up on a FAST channel also means that someone’s hard work can be seen.

Your streaming future everybody. You'll own nothing and you won't even be able to watch it a year after it comes out.

Isn't YouTube deleting a bunch of accounts and videos too? Thought I saw that somewhere.
or if something offends someone later on, they may take the episode away

If it's up for streaming for at least a day, you'll be able to pirate it not problem

I think the bean counters don't realize the psychology of many folks who subscribe to streaming services. It's kinda like game pass or a fat steam library of 100 hour long rpgs I know I'll never play but just like seeing on my shelf, the ACCESS is the appeal. I get HBOmax and I have ALL of DC, even if I know I'm not gonna watch B:TAS this month, just knowing it's right there at my fingertips helps to justify the subscription in a weird way.

Remove the back catalogue of stuff and I may as well not subscribe and just pay as I go or invest in discs again. RIP streaming I guess.

Kids mooching off parents probably haven't developed this concept yet because in their world it's always been 100% available 100% of the time. Trying to explain how shows used to work to my kids, it's like a foreign language. Welcome to the good old days, yah bitches!!!

How does it save money not to stream them? Do actors get residuals when they are streamed?

Most streaming services run on AWS. Less people streaming means less money spent.
Hang on, their plan is to try to get folks to watch the service LESS to save money?

This is just gonna lead to 1 month subs to binge watch or everyone just goes to the cheapest ad supported plan for that impulsive viewing. Though having stuff only available half the year might be some sort of misguided attempt to defeat binge watchers as you couldn't watch everything from the past year in 1 month. Sheesh.

Usually I'm bummed to see streaming services shrink their catalogues, but that Willow show was awful and I'm glad to see it get fucked over.

Disney is bleeding money and investors are out for blood. Iger has to show he’s willing to make big cuts, and removing some of Chapek’s garbage to lesson their AWS bill is one way to cut costs.

Ugh, a race to see how to manage the catalogue to incentivize staying subscribed but to minimize actual watch time seems like a disaster all around.

I expect to see lower bit rate, more compression, and increasing costs for HD then.

Or, and bear with me here, perhaps Disney could make content with a higher attach rate for 80% of the potential audience instead of focus grouped to death, made by committee, checklist shows with only a mediocre appeal to the entire possible audience. So much of their stuff doesn't resonate with anyone because it isn't well directed to any actual group. They need more stuff like that Crater film (though that movie has a SERIOUS issue with parental representation, pretty common in a lot of Disney shows, TBH) and way less of what they are stumbling around trying to do with Star Wars, Marvel, and whatnot.

That's a lot of fat, if this were games, 90%+ of that would be considered DLC.

What was cruel is the way they twisted and wrote those characters.

I don't mind an LGBT storyline or to make the girl the one who saves the day... But the dialogue and making the bearded guy the comic relief (should have just been Revelori) should have been done by people who have roots in fantasy writing.

Weird that they're removing The Princess too. It was pretty fun :lollipop_pensive:

I heard it's not just about bandwidth cost, but also a tax write off and they can also save on stuff like music licensing.

SO, I read one of the main villains, married Madmartigan?
Without going into depth... I find this repulsive. I will argue that Madmartigan was one of the main draws to the movie, at least for myself.
The second might be Willow himself, but I will place him as third, because all of the cool shit that happened. In this show, the clothes looked fake age or just flat out new, everyone looked like they took showers before acting their lines. In the original film, everyone looks fucking dirty, even the people that look clean have brought questions to my mind.

I seriously think a lot of creatives in Hollywood have fucking lost the plot, completely. At least it will be easier to spot a good movie in all of the this fucking woke, sanitized, non-critical-thinking bullshit, roundabout copycat, septic tank inhibiting film-scum contrived industry, should one emit from the nether regions of Good Taste.

No, madmartigan (is that one name ir is it Mad...Martigan?) marries Sorsha and has a boy and a girl (don't recall if they were twins). Then he eventually fucks off searching for some magic armor and disappears. The series is largely the fallout of that for his kids. But it also reduces Willow to a grumpy old man still dealing with magic insecurity despite him blasting fools when needed. Elora Dan is somehow a scullery maid for no good reason.

Lots of problems with the show but it ended in a decent place, I wish they had a second season with a better showrunner.

Wasn't Willow in production or in talks prior to Chapek?

This was pretty much my reaction, I saw the reasoning behind it and was like...what? Not that these shows are a great loss, but just the thought process of cost-cutting by getting subscribers to watch less shows isn't that reassuring. Like the goal is to make you want it most while using it the least.

Yeah, I get why they canned it, but damn, I REALLY wanted more of those last 2-3 eps. Those magic fights on the shallow ocean at night, Elora Dan coming into her own, Willow stepping up as the mentor he ought to be, the lesbian girls figuring their shit out, prince boy getting dunked on and realizing he is GODDAMN MADMARITGANS SON!!! That is what I wanted.

Kinda like the Dark Crystal show getting tanked after just 1 season. I loved that shit and I was hoping they could get past the weak parts and really deliver in S2.
