That's why its referred to as the Serena Slam. If you went by that then Steffi actually has 2 Grand Slams.

So, Steffi won 1 Grand Slam the traditional way and also won 4 major titles consecutively? What year(s) did that occur, and starting w/ which major title?

It was done in the same order that Serena did. She started in 93 by winning the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open then she followed that up by winning the Australian Open in 94.

Thanks.

I think Serena/Venus are still players to be reckon with. They probably lost their first love along the way since competition was nothing to them, but since most of the players has caught up to them, it's time to buckle down and start playing great again.

They won't ever get back to their former level. They can both still win a few slams, but they won't be able to dominate anymore. This is very similar to what happened to McEnroe. He was clearly the best player of his era for 3 years and then he just lost the desire to train and keep it up. After he took his short break away from tennis I think he only won one more slam. Granted men's tennis is a 100x more competitive than women's, but I still think Serena blew her chance to be considered one of the all time greats.

Edit: I also have to say that Serena is probably one of the least classy athletes I have ever seen. She always makes an excuse when she loses and finds a way to blame an injury, boredom, whatever and in the process insults her opponent. She is like a women's tennis answer to Connor. Damn that guy had no class.

Glad to hear Venus came back to win. When I had to leave, she was down 5-4 to Lindsay, and I think she had just gotten advantage from Deuce. I guess she closed that game out and went on to win the set. Congrats Venus. A lot of people were writing her off, but she's still crazy talented. She and Serena need to focus more on their game and less on their extracurricular shit. I think they're getting too distracted, but hey..it's their life. PEACE.

Steffi won a Grand Slam. Serena never did. And Venus isn't in the league of either of those two.

Serena held four slam titles in a row...who gives a fuck if it was in a calender year or not.

Prime vs prime, Serena slays Steffi. That's just a fact. And the argument could be made that Graf wasn't even the best female player of her era, but won the most titles simply due to circumstance. Prior to Seles getting stabbed, she was clearly the best female player in the world.

And quit this horseshit about a player never being able to return to form...like I said earlier in the thread, both Venus and Lindsay Davenport were written the fuck off by all the experts, yet there they were on Saturday putting on possibly the best women's match since the turn of the century. Who's to say that Serena couldn't get back to her dominant form? People always love to be the first to say someone is done, but they're MIA when it gets thrown back in their face.

Graf won the majority of her titles before Seles got stabbed. Though that was unfortunate because Monica was definitely the better player at the time it happened and she should have been able to leave her own mark on history.

Regardless, like someone else said, if you are talking about holding 4 slams at one time then Steffi did it twice. I also think Steffi could have held her own against Serena as well. It is comparing different eras, but Steffi had probably the best forehand ever in the women's game and was just as fast as the Williams sisters. Then again Serena's serve might give her the edge. Hard to say. Graf dominated tennis the same way Serena did, she just did it for a longer time and for that reason I give her the edge. I don't know how you came to that "fact" so conclusively though.

And the reason I said she won't be able to return to form is I have never seen a tennis player get back to that level once they have lost it. Players have won slams with long periods in between, but usually once a player losses the desire to win in tennis they are done. Tennis is extremely mentally demanding and you can see the effects on players over time. If Serena gets back to her former level she will be the first to do so.

I'm a sports fan...it's what we do. Hell as a Faker fan, it's what you are. :lol

I'm going to say it again...both Venus and Lindsay were written off two or three years ago (hell, further back in Lindsay's case), yet they both shared center stage on Saturday. Hell, Lindsay was on the verge of retirement. Serena I think is only 24...young enough to put together a good two year streak similar to the one she had a few years ago. That's not to say it will happen mind you, but I think writing that possibility off is foolhardy.

This was in some newspaper yesterday:

I love the boy standing there with a "who the hell cares" kind of attitude, especially his facial expression.

Well considering I have never seen it happen in tennis before I don't know if dismissing it is foolhardy. I am never surprised when a top tennis player just drops off suddenly, the sport is so mentally intense and sooner or later every player loses his or her mental edge. I have yet to see anyone regain that edge and regain their top form, but hey maybe Serena will be the first. I really doubt it though.

I could see her winning 2 slams in a single year and maybe 5 or 6 slams total if she got her act together, I just don't think her game will reach the heights it did a few years ago. Tennis careers almost always trend go in peaks in valleys, but generally the trend is downwards.

When Serena does come back I hope she picks up a little class from her older sister. She comes off looking really bad when she loses. Granted tennis has cultivated some of the biggest sore losers of all time, but Serena needs to grow up and conduct herself better off of the court.
