Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Posting this again since no one replied. My driver is "Microphone (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) Version 10.0.10240.16384, and it works perfectly fine in Voice Recorder. Cortana does nothing, "Learn My Voice" just beeps and then nothing happens, and if I go to Settings->Time & Language -> Speech -> Microphone -> Get Started , I get stuck on this image. Nothing I say does anything here, but I know the microphone is working since it works in Voice Recorder!

Any ideas?

Cortana wasn't hearing me at first. I use a piece of software called voicemeeter. It uses different inputs and outputs in Windows audio panel. Mine wasn't set properly after the upgrade. Make sure you set your default communications devices properly for your recording device.

I don't know if this has been talked about already (there's a lot of pages to go through), but I'd avoid hitting "Express Settings". Everything that's turned on by default seems kinda...gross.

These aren't my pictures, but the official release is very similar to these. Sorry if it's already been discussed.

Weird. I got the media tool to boot up properly, but when I get past the preparation stage, it only gives me the option to delete all of my apps and keep only personal settings/files. It says it's because my language is different from the one I'm trying to install.

I have Japanese windows, but I'm download the tool from the Japanese link (https://www.microsoft.com/ja-jp/software-download/windows10) and everything is appearing in Japanese...

This kind of sucks.

Anybody else have an issue with internet speed tanking after the upgrade? Maybe a driver issue? Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: Oh wow did speed test on my phone and it must be a router/modem issue. Stupid coincidence had me reinstalling drivers and stuff smh.

Blarg. So I have to reinstall 8, upgrade to 10, then clean install 10. Dang.

They install pretty fast, but I spent an hour setting up 10 after it installed. I'll just use it unactivated for now.

See if you can enable sync on a ms account while it isn't activated. It should pull quite a few settings and profile options over. Could save you some time setting it all back up.

Never use express settings on anything ever.

But you should know that the "send typing and inking data" thing is required for Cortana to be used at all. You can easily change it later.

If you change system locale etc to US English the installer will be in English after it downloads.

IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS

DO NOT go and wipe your download folder. While that may work for some people, it doesn't work for everyone, as the upgrade process is complex with a ton of different phases and multiple reasons why it may or may not work.

You'll likely end up causing more problems than you solve.

INSTEAD

Follow the instructions here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0/d695e827-9774-4e10-8972-df8d51a7bb51?auth=1

By doing this, not only are you avoiding re-downloading the entire thing with the Media Creation Tool, but you are also avoiding a lot of potential headaches.

The error code does not mean that there was a problem with the download. It simply means that you weren't eligible to install it yet.

Thinks are actually going really well! Just been super busy is all :-)

Thanks! Doing that registry trick got it to work for me!

Does hiding the search bar in the taskbar disable all things search/cortana related? Or do I need to delve deeper to turn it off 100%?

edit: And the Windows Update method of installing 10 was pure shit, downloaded the 64 bit installer and was installed in less than an hour, what a waste of time Update was.

After 4 hours in this thread I am going to sleep. Good luck to everyone upgrading and if anyone needs PC help let me know, always open to help!

Did you select the language within the Media Creation Tool that matches your current Windows language?

No, you can still type from the start menu and it will use Cortana or search depending on the context.

Did they move the panel to control what icons appear in your notification area?

edit: this thing--any idea where it went?

I did this and installed it.

Is this likely to cause me any problems?

Everything seems to be working fine.

Settings>system>notfiications and actions

I just wish there was some way to get rid of the "hidden" notifications. I don't want shit like Windows Defender and OneDrive even in the little pop-up notification list.

I'm sorry but I had to laugh, the last thing MS has is a great design team, it's a fucking mess. It's truly a bunch of ideas thrown together without much care for consistency. Incorrect padding, ui menu overlappings, weird use of colors, icons in many different styles, etc..

Yup. I've only looked around a bit in Windows 10 on my laptop (still on Win7 on my desktop) and it still has the same ugliness that Windows 8 had. All the new stuff really clash with the more classic Windows look.

Interesting issue... I've hit a "device limit" after installing Windows 10 on my tablet. I have two devices - my PC and my tablet. As a result, unless I delete my PC (the first device) from my profile, which will prevent me using the Windows store on it, I can't use any apps on my tablet.

O_O

FYI - the Microsoft Answer Tech I chatted to suggested I roll back my tablet and install again. Not sure how that would help, but what the hell. I'll report back with my findings...

Unsurprisingly, this made no difference.

Right, fixed it.

  1. Log on to the OneDrive Website
  2. Check to see what's listed under "PCs" on the left hand side; if there are more devices there than you have / need, delete the extras and you might be golden. I had some random "DESKTOP-XYZASRQ" or whatever that doesn't show up in the activated devices section - deleting that sorted me out.

Oh duh. Thanks. I'm still mentally stuck in a Control Panel mode, so I look for everything there.

Ok, so I downloaded Windows 10 Home thru the tool, had it make a bootable USB drive again, but now when I try to upgrade it wants a product key!
My laptop came with Windows 8 Single Language OEM, was I supposed to have gotten Windows 10 Single Language after all? Grrrr

I had a small graphical glitch where the taskbar on the lower right side moved like 3 millimeters and then went back in. Also, the trackpad on my laptop did not work until I installed the drivers.

I'm in the exact same boat. I'm stuck on the product key part for my laptop (which is running Windows 7), and it's telling me my product key ain't working.

Are there any fixes for this?

Is there a fix for blurry text on some apps? I already set DPI to 100% but the icons and text are too small so I set them to 125% which makes them perfect for my screen but still blurry text on device manager, skype, etc.

It's supposed to offer to upgrade if the versions match, like Windows 7 Pro to 10 Pro. It shouldn't ask for a key as far as I know.

Windows+Tab

Settings > Personalization > Colors. But it's a bit more restrictive than I'd like.

Nope and it fucking sucks. There are ways to change the title bar colors, but I don't think any solutions allow you to change the text color or to pick different colors for focused windows vs unfocused windows:

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=windows%2010%20change%20title%20bar%20color

Oh I see. And since I had a blue, it wants to make the taskbar blue. I don't mind Start in blue, but I'm a bit eh on a blue taskbar. Maybe I'll just deal with it. According to the settings, I'm already on translucent, so maybe it's time to pick a slightly brighter background.

For title bars, I'd really just like a slightly darker gray, like 8.1 had. It's just too much.

The cursor in modern apps just don't react like I want to. Without a hover effect, it's sort of a guessing game. At least I can finally have a modern Word viewer so I can finally view Word and Powerpoint docs. It's beautiful!

Try choosing "Skip This" and complete the install.

I just finished an upgrade on my laptop from win7. It went like this; I upgrade win7 to 10. (Created windows account) Then I installed a new ssd and used the 10 install DVD I made. It asked for product key a couple times but I chose to skip. Once I logged in with the account I created during the first install it seemed to sync up and showed windows being 'active'.

I think I'm boned. I did a clean install. Seems I can't activate now.

I guess I should have upgraded THEN done a clean install, eh? That makes my Win 8.1 key work?

I upgraded from 7 to 10, it showed as activated and everything, even used my Microsoft account for login, etc.

Did a clean install (used 'skip' on the product key parts), now it won't activate. I hope I'm not totally screwed either.

I'm a little confused on what you're saying here. I've only ever used the microphone built into the computer, so I don't have any other audio inputs. And it properly works in other apps, it just does nothing on the Speech Recognition page.

In my case it doesn't even give me the skip option if I run the upgrade from within Windows 8.1. So now I'm booted to the USB drive, which does show skip.
Edit: can't upgrade from here so gotta go back to Windows. So either I really need Windows 10 Single Language or their activation servers are down or something.

I went ahead and tried the USB install option using the Media Creation tool. That worked perfectly (after buying a smaller USB drive; my only ones were 64GB and the tool didn't like that) - no more errors, 'something happened', or anything like that. I'm shocked by how intact everything is after the upgrade; even the icons are in the same place as before. There's also a VPN app I use to connect to my work that's notoriously finicky about running when new versions of Windows come out, and even that worked without having to do anything. (I did have to install the Nvidia driver - perhaps it's because I have a 980Ti). Kudos to Microsoft!

The start menu is good enough (combined with the Cortana search) that I'm not going to bother with my start menu replacement of choice. I haven't seen any issues of note yet, but I've only been running for a couple hours.

I'm experiencing a weird problem, one that was NOT happening in the preview build: the Xbox One controller is not functioning properly while playing some Steam games. Tried Ori and the Blind Forest and it seems some Keys are always pressed (left arrow). Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

I'm getting really bad static whenever I try playing audio. I've updated the drivers and followed some online instructions but I'm still running into problems. A lot of the search results I'm getting are from a few months ago, before Realtek supposedly fixed the issue, so that's no help.

So this new Mail app. Any way to get it to auto-download images, or is it remembered somehow? Otherwise, it's a pretty solid improvement. I like it.
And also, what happened to the new fonts we would get, like Arial Nova and Rockwell Nova?

On my desktop I'm getting a "Windows 10 installation has failed" message just before the first time it's meant to restart (the restart that happens before the upgrade screen that looks like a large circle). Never happened before.

Has anyone figured out anything about those error messages?
