Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

In my case it doesn't even give me the skip option if I run the upgrade from within Windows 8.1. So now I'm booted to the USB drive, which does show skip.
Edit: can't upgrade from here so gotta go back to Windows. So either I really need Windows 10 Single Language or their activation servers are down or something.

MS servers may be down. I'm doing my second machine and when I try to verify my Microsoft account email it isn't making it through their webpage.

The top of every window appear to be a blindingly bright white. Any way to change the color of windows in Windows 10? Tried disabling the AppsUseLightTheme registry stuff but that doesn't appear to work for most windows.

I don't know if this has been talked about already (there's a lot of pages to go through), but I'd avoid hitting "Express Settings". Everything that's turned on by default seems kinda...gross.

These aren't my pictures, but the official release is very similar to these. Sorry if it's already been discussed.

/tinfoil hat

Yep first thing I did was turn off all that junk app stuff, cortana and sending info to MS.

I upgraded from 7 to 10, it showed as activated and everything, even used my Microsoft account for login, etc.

Did a clean install (used 'skip' on the product key parts), now it won't activate. I hope I'm not totally screwed either.
I'm in the same boat. Doesn't help that 10 made my games not work either and I can't find my 7 key. Thinking I might just buy a cheap 8.1 key and use that instead for now.

So can you just delete the old windows folder or is there more to it than that. I want that SSD space, also talking about SSD's is Win 10 pretty well configured for them or do I need to do tweaks.

Also how can I make it stop asking me for admin priv for everything.

And suddenly, it shows my Windows 10 as activated. I guess their servers must be chugging.

So for posterity or because it might help someone else, here was my process:

Previous legit Win 7 install.
Upgrade to Win 10 - went smooth, but wanted to do a clean install.
Made USB installer with the Media Tool.
Booted with USB, formatted C:, installed Win 10, skipped all the 'enter product key' sections.
Win 10 installed, but then said 'not activated' for a good 30 minutes, then suddenly showed as activated.
(*MIGHT* have had something to do with my timezone setting being wrong, since it activated the instant I fixed it).

Other bits:
Time To Login from start of clean install: 15 minutes (nice)
Install size: around 15GB.

succesfully changed my top bar colors with the guide that's been posted

no more blindness causing whiteness

Looks like the dark mode did work, just not in the explorer window, where I want it most.

I see. Well, there's a way to do what you want, but it seems annoying (I've never done it before so I wouldn't know).

From the dark theme page is this paragraph:

To get a higher-quality dark theme on the WIndows desktop — one that changes the interface of the File Explorer window to look dark, for example — you’ll need to do the same thing you had to do on previous versions of Windows. This involves patching your uxtheme.dll to allow user-created visual styles and downloading third-party Windows styles from the Internet.

And there's a link to this guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/168270/how-to-install-custom-themes-and-visual-styles-in-windows/

Ah. Soprry. Didn't know.

Sooo...do I just leave it on that screen? Can I still surf the net and everything while it's in the background?

Yeah I just did some other shit while Windows did its work. Eventually after showing a bunch of other messages Windows will reboot and start the actual install, but that was about two hours into the Update process for me lol.

Run Disk Cleanup. It can get rid of the old Windows files for you without you deleting something by accident.

Just go to 'Clean up system files' once you've opened it, and tick which files you want it to clean.

I did this and installed it.

Is this likely to cause me any problems?

Everything seems to be working fine.

If you got all the way to Windows 10 using that method, you should be fine. But for people who try that method and it doesn't work, it'll probably make upgrading more difficult.

There any way to purge that fugly 1998 Windows logo with light and smoke thing on the lock screen when entering the password? I much preferred the simple color background of Windows 8.

I finished upgrading to Windows 10 in my windows partition. Everything is running fine, except that I can't get the maximum display for my iMac. Biggest I can get is 1920 x 1440. Anyone know how to get around this?

Edit: Hmm, nevermind. Seems the bootcamp drivers are just some. I can't use the buttons for volume/brightness in the keyboard.

Ok, I THINK I figured it out - I had to go into the "Sources" folder in the USB drive and run the setup.exe file that was in there. Now I get the upgrade option. However it now says "this upgrade path is not supported." Argh! Might need to get Single Language after all. I wish the Microsoft employee member would chime in.

OK so it's so it's still locking up for me constantly. I can't go into swings without it freezing, requiring me to hit the rest button on the computer. I can't even click the power button on the computer when it freezes. This is easily the most unstable OS I've ever used.

Upgraded from Windows 7 last night and other than the image looking big i noticed that i cant access settings. When i click on it a folder flashes up on screen but disappears instantly.

After going to google i found the suggestion to type sfc.scannow in the command prompt which i did and got "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

Im useless at the messing with a computer at this level so im not sure what to do. I was planning on formatting the pc anyway once i was upgraded so if anyone has any suggestions on how to do that i would be truly thankful.

Please help, guys.

I went through the Media Creation Tool process. Everything there went very smoothly. It went through all the prompts. It started installing Windows 10 and I don't know what percentage it got to but it was over 75%, and the system had to restart. Well, while it was doing that I went out to the kitchen to get something to drink. I came back and it was on the Gigabyte splash screen saying something about "boot failure". So I had it just reboot the computer and...now I'm just back in Windows 8.1, like nothing ever happened.

What happened? Am I able to resume installation somehow? It's so bizarre.

I am having so many problems trying to install Win 10. But it's not just the installation that I'm having problems with, and it's driving me insane since nothing that I can find online is helping.

I've now tried twice to install Win 10, but both times the installation process stalled at about 25%, leaving me to reboot the system, which reinstalls Win 8.1. Once that is done, the error I get is:

0xC1900101 - 0x20004
The Installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation.

No idea what that means, and there isn't that much info online.

But I've been having other issues as well. Like I can't for the life of me install the newest graphic drivers for my Radeon HD 7800. Every time I try to install them, I get an error and then the system stalls. Even when I try to uninstall them, the system stalls.

I've tried to go into safe mode to deal with the graphic driver issue, but my keyboard doesn't seem to be working during bootup, cause I can't hit any key to get into my bios or any other command. I even made a bootable DVD for Win 10, but it says that I need to press any key to read the DVD, and it's not working!

I thought it might be a virus or something, but I checked with Avast, and it didn't seem to catch anything. I'm running a full scan right now just to be sure.

Even then, my system seems to want to freeze and hang even right after I reboot half the time. I can get to the screen where I input my password, and 1 out of every 3 times it will freeze, either once I'm typing my password, or after I hit enter and it's loading into my desktop or after the desktop is loaded and I try to move the mouse, only for it to never appear, nor does any keyboard strokes do anything. Not every time I reset the system, but enough to be extremely frustrating.

So basically, my computer is all types of messed up. I can't seem to restore any of my backups either. So I'm not sure what to do. I really don't want to format just yet, as trying to remember what programs I have installed would be a huge task. At least my personal files are on external harddrives.

Reinstall using Windows 10 home not pro.

Reinstall using Windows 10 home not pro.

I think it was already installing Windows 10 Home if I remember correctly. I mean, do I have to restart the Media Creation Tool and have it download Windows 10 again? I had it upgrade while in the OS instead of creating installation media.

Okay, this is pretty damn weird. Seems like the OS is doing all the work with the drivers and stuff. Resolution is now maxed, Keyboard tab appeared once again on bootcamp panel (but I still can't use it to change the volume/brightness). I will wait a bit then restart.

Sorry to ask this again. but.
I did this (How to: Change User Folder Locations in Windows 7) on windows seven, and i wan't to make sure that it's still there and fine on 10, but i can't find my user thing, and when i go to the C drive and check my user folder that way, it says all my folders on my C drive. :( can anyone help. ?
Please

So installed the update, as expected was painless, and started playing around with things that weren't so easy and were slow in a VM.

One curiosity is with Groove. I have a local library and a copy of it in onedrive and for some reason with the local version lost of albums are missing cover art whilst with the onedrive copy they do.

Anyone know much about how Groove gets its cover art. I mean I have both cover art embedded in all my files as well as a copy of the cover art in each albums folder.

I'm using the 64 bit download tool to try and install Win 10 in my Win 7 Pro laptop.

I get to the Product Key screen and it says mine doesn't work. There's no option to skip past this screen.

I then tried running a different Setup.exe... This let me skip the product key screen, but when I go to install on the next page, it gives me that error message someone posted above on this page.

Don't know what to do :/

Well I looked into my error code more and saw a potential solution here:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821

If that doesn't work, it has been said it can be related to dual-boot systems, which mine is. I have my Linux partition on a whole separate hard drive, but it is the one that has first priority since I couldn't get the Windows boot menu to properly launch Linux. So if this Microsoft tool doesn't work, maybe if I change boot order in BIOS and/or just unplug that HD it will work properly.

Sweet... everything is installed and running now! Seems great so far. Love the addition of Task view. Hot corners and full screen "modern" home screen are gone. Excellent.

For fuck sake Microsoft.

I downloaded the windows 10 64bit version.

Installed it.

Run AMD 64bit driver and it tells me my system is 32bit.

I check and low and behold it's fucking 32bit.

What fucking year is it?

I sell laptops for a living and we havnt sold anything 32bit in fucking years.

Seriously.

Now I have to do this shit AGAIN!

I select UK english
Windows 10 Home
64bit.

I'm doing it again my god.

If anyone's being having problems with malfunctioning Xbox One controllers, just follow this link. Worked like a charm for me.

The strange thing is: why the fuck an older version of the driver works and not the new one?

EDIT: It seems DirectX 12 impulse triggers are the cause. That explains why the older driver works and the new causes some incompatibility issues.

You got windows 10 pro right?

I'm surprised at how painless this upgrade is so far. I didn't do a clean install or anything, but everything is noticeably faster than before from windows 7. The only issue I had was that my text was blown up, making everything look terrible, which I quickly was able to find the solution within 5 minutes.

Now it's even locking up when I try to reset it from the windows bar. I'm really not sure how to fix this. Even if I could roll back to Windows 7, I'd never be able to use the computer long enough to do so.

Is reddit GAF's savior?

Define "stalled". How long did you wait? When I installed Win10 the percentage often didn't move for 20-30min and then jumped up 40%. Some peeps did the installation in 30min, for me it took 4 hours, 2.5 of which were spent on the actual installation screen.

Don't touch anything during the install process. Be patient

I can't tell how to download Windows 10 Pro specifically. Whenever I go to that installer site, it only asks if you want to select the 32 or 64 bit version. I don't see where to specify if you're downloading Home or Pro or Enterprise.

In the media creation tool that you download for x64 bit or x86 bit, the tool has a selection where you can choose which ISO (Pro/Home) you want.
