Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I have every Win 8.1 update installed, but there's no $Windows.~BT folder, or anything downloading in "SoftwareDistribution/Download". There are more than 10 folders inside, but only 341kb all together. Whyyyy? :(

Nice I have that $Windows BT folder at 6.22GB 17.2K files. Hopefully its ready to go tomorrow. Anyone have an idea of how they will be rolling it out and when? Thinking of taking the day off work so I can set up my rig :)

Wait, there's an update folder coming to those who installed 10240 via converting the ESD to ISO? Don't think I have anything.

For some reason yes. Think its just cumulative updates, no idea if it will actually end up running.

In my case, i have upgraded a legt win 7 ultiamte to 10130, then all the way to 10240. If you installed 10240 manually, it might be different.

Hm I installed 10240 via ISO yesterday and disabled automatic updates via group policy right away. Time to re-enable and see what happens, if anything.

GAF! Hold me!

I have all the windows updates installed and set to show hidden folders but I do not see the $windows~bt folder in my directory.. what am I doing wrong?

Hmm so no folder over here yet (UK). However I'm massively behind in Windows 8.1 updates. I just hit the update app and I'm behind by about 1.3 gb worth of files. I'm installing all those updates now (that's sending my computer to a crawl). Will getting fully up to date make any difference? I was thinking of doing a reboot soon once the updates have finished and seeing if the special Windows BT folder appears. I checked C:\Windows\SoftwareDistrubution\Downloads and there's 3.6 gb in there accounting for 40k files.

Does that mean anything? Excited to upgrade!

My folder is at 5.93 and launching Setup.exe starts the installation process... I'm going to try it.

EDIT: Launches the full screen install and fails with "Missing [boot.wim]". Damn.

My W8 PC and W7 laptop are on 140MB, havent moved for a while. My Dad's laptop was at 56MB, went to 58 then stopped.
My brothers laptop...has been on pretty much all day I think and seems done. 6.36GB around 17k files.

If I get so impatient, can I just copy the files from my brothers laptop to each computer and install W10 that way? Or is there some special file(s) that are specific to that computer/account?

EDIT: Shit! Was 140MB on my desktop like an hour ago, now it shot up to 6GB!

Sorry, how do I reserve from Windows 7? I dont have the "Windows" icon available on Windows 8

Dammit, seems I didnt have my Windows up to date...98 updates to do lol

I guess I'll get my upgrade in a few weeks, only got to the reserve W10 popup 1 hour ago (I wiped my PC cause W10 activation failed when I installed the preview a week ago).

Maybe DreamSpark releases the upgrade tomorrow.

I just got my new computer that came with windows 8.1 and after using the tiles for a day, I can't wait for Windows 10.

Can somebody with two PCs on different OS or sth confirm whether or not the install folder is the same size regardless of your OS? My connection is slow so it would be great if I didn't have to download the setup twice (currently at 3,47gb on Win7 Home)

I know lol. Tell me about it. Same thing happened to me and Windows was like "you are 1.3 gb in Windows update files out of date!" so now I have to just chill here and wait for a shit load of updates to install. I really wish I knew about this whole "reserve your place" thing earlier. I would have updated and reserved weeks ago since I've wanted to upgrade from Windows 8.1 for ages. Windows 10 looks like the perfect upgrade compared to what I have now.

I'm going to do the same thing you're doing and just see what happens. I'm hoping when it hits midnight here in the UK (so July 29) I'll be able to pull this off.

More probable scenario with me reserving so late is I'm going to be waiting a while. Guess we'll see.

Ah crud, I just did some reading on how to get Windows 10 and discovered that you need Windows 7 SP1 to get it but has never actually worked on either of my home PCs. They've been trying for years to install it every time I shut my computer down but always fail. I've spent hours trying to get it to work but to no avail. Well this sucks.

So excited to finally get to reformat my machine. its been ages (partially thanks to Win 8 being so stable and trouble free).

Just sucks we have to go through such a round about way of doing it. Are they still making us install the Windows 10 update, load it up, than do a full re-install? I need to litterally reformat, change some bios settings, and then do a completely fresh install (but no hardware is changing). Supposedly it will know everything is good and activate it self?

How do you re-run the windows 10 compatiability checker?

My says that my 980ti is the reason it can't upgrade but the date is 7/3. How do I make it re-run?

Thanks for the heads up on checking compatibility. Totally slipped my mind to do that and I probably should since my laptop is about two years old now. Runs Windows 8.1 like a dream though so hopefully I'll be fine. Guess I'll do that now and report back.

Also why would a 980ti prevent you from upgrading? Isn't that like a really recent and expensive GeForce graphics card?

Soooo...

my PC has been terribly slow the last few hours in very irregular timeframes. The working speed itself as well as internet connection.
Does this have something to with W10 being rolled out right now? Just coincidence? Can't see anything that would confirm an update or downloads, don't see that hidden folder either.

e: Task Manager shows that the CPU is working at a 100% capacity..

Did not expect to get the upgrade so fast. I have a hidden $Windows.~BT folder too (currently at 140mb only though).

Ahh, failed to upload 3 of the 98 updates. Trying again, because I still dont see the update. Apparently a very specific update name, KB something, installs the upgrade button

Can't seem to get the windows 10 icon on my taskbar.

The cmd thing didn't work and the update checker keeps crashing.

woot. computer at work got the folder now. had to do the recent update.

gonna have to check home pc. which i haven't turned on since i reserved lol
