Question: I reserved my copy, but can I still update my OS at will whenever I want even when it becomes available to me?

You're looking for KB3035583 if it doesn't appear after all the updates are installed.

done clean installing 8.1

funnily. after a few full "rounds" of updating, it found another 130(!) important update, and the 3035583 was actually left unchecked. I suppose it really wants all updates applied before doing an eventual upgrade.

So it releases midnight in every country globally?! Woo!

I guess in theory, but really only for the few people who actually have Windows update downloading the files to their computer. It seems like it didn't really matter when you reserved your Windows 10, it's luck of the draw as to when your Windows actually downloads the files needed for the update.

I wonder if you can just download the same files manually from the Internet and start the update yourself.

Yeah ... well I meant for those getting the files downloaded (which seems to be a fair few in this thread at least).

I have every Windows update available but no folder still.

Same here, I really want it to just start downloading.

You have to manually reserve your place via the get Windows 10 app that appears in your system tray once Windows 7/8.1 becomes up to date. Pretty sure that's the only way you're eventually selected to background download the files early. If you've already done that then never mind; just thought I'd throw it out there just in case.

Yeah, that's what's annoying me! :P Got five computers (three here, a friend has two) now and none of them are downloading anything. Everything updated, nothing in Windows update, tried rebooting. No folders, no nothing, and all reserved Windows 10 on the first day possible.

I don't have the win10 update app symbol and trying that batch stuff didn't work either.
or lets better say I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

so no win 10 for me?

Can you check you list of installed updates, "Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro" appears in mine as a failed update this morning around the time the folder was created for the upgrade.

Maybe try checking for updates?

Stupid question but have you enabled hidden folders? It's a hidden folder.

If you're seeing this failure in Windows Update, it's innocuous and won't block upgrades once you're allowed to install. Only a small minority of people are seeing that error, and we're pretty sure what's causing it.

That said, for anyone who does see it, feel free to PM me this file and it'll help go from 99% certainty to 100% certainty :-)

I did that ages ago when it first popped up :/

do you have KB3035583?
maybe it downloads into some temp folder and only moves completed files to the "update folder"

I do, yeah.

Oh shit. I did a disk clean-up a while this morning and it was around 3-4 GB of data. Damn, I wonder if that was my data for my windows 10? lmao.

Windows Update says:

Update for Windows 10 reserved

so what does this mean? midnight i'll have it?

It means that whenever you're selected as part of the phased rollout, you'll get the option to upgrade at your leisure.

Unlikely.

I've had that Windows 10 update failure, can I just leave it alone and everything will still install fine on 29th?

None of the computers have "Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro" update available in any form, or as a failed install. I've tried checking for updates every few hours but nothing.

Yep, I always have hidden folders visible.

I've been keeping my eye out on my home PC remotely, waiting impatiently for the update.

Now, I've changed my mind and will wait. I've ordered a bigger SSD (current is 64GB) and will clone my current drive to it.

Hmm, mine hasn't gone past 5.98 and 16.8k files.

My $Windows.~BT folder is 5.98 GB with 16.8k files too! It's been that size for a few hours now.

Mine seems stopped at 6.38GB. Think that might be the final download amount,

Nice I have that $Windows BT folder at 6.22GB 17.2K files. Hopefully its ready to go tomorrow. Anyone have an idea of how they will be rolling it out and when? Thinking of taking the day off work so I can set up my rig :)

I UK, BT folder is up to 6.8GB atm

...why are some people's over 6GB?

Well, I hope my 5.98GB $Windows BT folder installs right away on the 29th.

maybe different language packs, Windows 10 N?

Dammit. I should've checked my computer last night when I was on it. I knew something was bottle necking my bandwidth and didn't even check to see what it could be. Now I'm at work >__>

How big is the download package?

I only have 12.9 gb left in my C drive (although I have a D drie on my laptop with 200gb but the Windows OS stuff isn't on there)

Can somebody confirm or deny if upgrading to Windows 10 is going to wipe my computer? I don't want to lose any of my programs/saved data. Is it simply an update, or will I lose everything?

of course it won't wipe your computer. Do you think Microsoft is trying to convince a billion people to start over from scratch?

~6-7GB

Don't know if it requires more for the installation process though (afaik after the installation theres a bloat-folder called Windows.OLD containing old system files).

You won't lose anything, all your files and programs are transferred. If you want to start with a fresh install there is an option in W10 to "refresh" your computer.

Earlier, my folder was at 140mb. 30 mins later and I have the $Windows. BT~ folder at 4.77GB.

Tried to run the setup and got this:

Guess I gotta wait for more of it to download.

You need to make an iso of install.esd. Reddit has an tutorial about this. You can mount the iso and install Windows 10.

Are they going to give an ISO tomorrow? I have 3 PCs to upgrade and I sure don't want to download this on each one by one.
