"If you will be installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key."

Some people have been asked for a key, others pressed upgrade and it just worked. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, but isn't that just if you're installing fresh from the ISO image...? Just upgrading seems to work just fine, at least for me.

Installing on my Surface 3 right now and downloading the update through the tool on my home desktop. Jumping in with both feet!

??? :( ???

alright. scheduled the install to happen in a few hours while i back things up. seems fine so far. crosses finger it actually installs correctly though. lol

updated on my surface pro 2. works great. although the phone companion app opens to a white page and then closes, will probably uninstall and reinstall it. also be sure to uncheck the "get updates from microsoft and send them to PCs on my local network and PCs on the internet". change it to local network. under windows update, advanced in the settings.

Is anyone having issues with their task manager freezing when trying to start it up? My start menu will also decide not to work randomly at times too.

My installation send to have stalled at 16% with copying files at 54%. Should I restart?
Edit: I guess I just needed to be patient. Never mind.

Okay. After almost giving up on fixing my network saying limited, I went into device manager and uninstalled my network driver including turning on remove the driver. I re-installed and now I have internet.

If they are asked for a key when they start the upgrade, it's most likely because they have downloaded an ISO from somewhere and got the wrong version. If you have Pro and download the Home version it will ask for a key. Download Pro and it will work.

I made that mistake at first because the site didn't say it was the Home version. I then made a new one from the right install.esd file and it worked fine.

i even updated all the stupid optional ones, including drivers for printers i no longer have :)

People have had luck just forcing it 2 or 3 times. It's dumb but a workaround is a workaround.

Great information, should be in OP.

About the W10 store app/game stuff, can i direct the installs to my bigger 2nd/3rd drive or does it force install on my tiny ssd?

My laptop came with Windows 7 but I'm about to replace it with a brand new desktop with no OS installed.

I have the product key for the laptop but will it work on the new desktop if I install Windows 10 on it and use the laptop's product key (assuming I haven't already installed Windows 10 on the laptop), or will I have to buy a new product key for the desktop?

Did this get linked/talked about yet?

"Windows 10: Here are the privacy issues you should know about"

Things that you are able to turn off, but how many people even know about it. Should be off by default imho.

Ugh:

Your encryption key is backed up to OneDrive
Not necessarily a bad thing but something you should be aware of. When device encryption is turned on, Windows 10 automatically encrypts the drive its installed on and generates a BitLocker recovery key. That’s backed up to your OneDrive account.

Whelp I got windows 10 installed, but now it says it is not genuine (´・ω・`)

I really hope it's a case of their activation servers being overloaded. I have now two computers here that refuse to activate. One an update from 7 to 10, the other a case of 8.1 -> 10 (activation successful) -> clean install of 10 (won't activate anymore).

How is this on low-powered devices?

I have an Atom-based HTPC running just fine on Win7. But I figure if I want to extend its servicable use, an upgrade to Win10 would be in my long-term interest.

So I hit the 10 icon on the lower right side and I clicked to notify me when I'd be ready to dl. Do I have the choice to hold off, if I want to? Or will it start on its own eventually. From the hiccups it's sounds like a lot are experiencing, maybe I'd rather wait a week or two. Or have I already gone past the point of no return?

I have a question in regards to space in my C hard drive as I been trying to move and delete enough so I can get enough space for the download. Last night I got up to 8 GB free however when I rebooted the space dropped down to 5.19 GB. I have no idea why and I'm concerned I may not have enough room (especially if it drops again). I have already cleared my shadow files and restore points up to the last point and if needed will turn off hibernation later.

My question though is if I cannot free enough space would I be able to save to another drive that I have with more space? And will I be able to do the install from there? If so, how? Or will that be automatic?

Updated my Surface Pro 1 so far...

-Well windows doesn't activate no matter what great.
-Edge is still terrible on touch, coming from IE11 best touch browser there was. smh.
-So called modern browser, still doesn't have an option to search for the highlighted text. Please MS are you joking? what year is it? Inspect Element? why on earth would I want that instead, Ask Cortana, yeah I don't want that thanks. I jsut want to search google with.
-The new windows update, well it was bad in previews too. But man, it doesn't tell you what size the updates are, how long is taking, it can't install some or leave other for later. It's trash.
-Pressing those tiny taskbar icons with your finger sure is fun...

Really disappointing experience so far. Probably rolling this back tomorrow.

Tried the reddit force-update trick, it downloaded and installed a generic update but the Windows 10 thing still tells me to wait, it doesn't want to install it.

What do I do from here?

Run Windows update normally, install everything it lists. Then attempt it again. It shouldn't have done anything like you described. It's possible it's not passing the 'ready' check.

How do i reset windows 10? I did the upgrade and now i want to do a clean install, yet when i click on reset this pc, remove everything, it tells me there is no recovery environment.

Apologies if this has already been answered but what's happening with DirectX 12? I heard that insider preview builds had DX12 installed but running my Dxdiag inside Windows 10 shows I have DX11.2? Has Microsoft not issued the update yet? I read that it was supposed to be day and date with the Windows 10 launch?

Do any of you guys have DX12 yet or are you still running DX11.2? Will it arrive in a future Windows 10 update?

Done installing, everything seems to have gone well. Now, where do I get my product key? I shouldn't have gotten it during the install, right...?

Does anyone elses Nvidia Experience not work with windows 10? Mine was gone after update, and every time I try to download it again, it fails.
