Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

People having problems trying to install it can consider burning a DVD of the installation media or creating a USB installation media. I got a lot of "something happened" doing it the usual way, but running the installer from the DVD version went perfectly.

Windows 10 appears to be perfectly...perfect on my laptop. Nothing changed, everything works fine, and I got all the new features that I wanted. This has to be the smoothest upgrade I have ever seen yet for an OS.

Even Edge isn't crash-prone this time!

Depends on which option you select. There is an option to nuke all the hard drives connected to your PC and then there is an option to nuke only the C drive. If you choose keep nothing, it will literally format the hard drive which you selected (all hard drives or just C) and then install Windows 10

I'm talking about this:

Is the third option going to format only C?

What the hell was MS thinking with these rolling installs. I still have not received notifications about installing, bullshit.

Question: So, the media creation tool has the clean install option without using the USB/DVD? If I want to do a clean install, I'll just use the software and run it?

I still have Vista. I know I know, I'm a bad person. I'm broke, and cannot afford to upgrade, but I've read on Forbes that you can download Windows 10 free, but you'd have to install their updates to continue using it for free.

Do you think it's worth it?

I'm being told by other people that because when I pressed upgrade I did the option not to keep my files I have kind of fucked it. I was supposed to keep the files and then do the refresh pc option or whatever.

I did keep everything at first, then reset, and no activation.

At least when you do this from within the OS (after upgrading) it asks whether you want to format all drives/partitions or just the system one. Probably the same here, although I decided to keep everything through the initial upgrade.

You're basically using pre-release software, so expect things to break. It's not the same as the regular Home update cadence since you'll be an Insider.

Sure

If you join preview and go to slow insider you will get pretty stable builds...i would say go for it

All done. Holy fuck guys. 100% smooth. No issues with anything. It even kept my very specific registry tweaks; I thought all that shit would get refreshed for some reason.

Not even any driver related issues or dual monitor issues.

So my desktop's Win 10 update thing never worked. Decided to check up on my Surface Pro 2 and it just said "We'll let you know when it's ready to install". Rebooted it for something unrelated and now the Windows 10 tray icon is completely gone.

Great job, MS. What a shitshow.

So, I've got two minor problems since installing. More just annoyances.

1. My desktop background is pixelated. This happened with Windows 7 but you could open the picture in a web browser and select "make desktop" and it would not pixelate the image. That workaround won't work now. Any ideas?

2. I have a dual monitor set up and there's a windows bar at the bottom of my second monitor (Primary monitor has an autohide taskbar). Any way to get rid of it on the second monitor?

Better performance, same if not better graphics....no mods is the only negative I can see plug native support for mouse/keyboard, controller and touch

It lacks a field of view slider (default is pretty low), the mouse sensitivity is crazy high (I had to put it on lowest AND lower the DPI on my mouse), it feels like some sort of mouse acceleration as well.

Better performance, yes. But I still think the damn java version is better overall now.

So neither the Windows Update method nor the Media Creation Tool are working for me. Is there nothing else I can do to force it?

I had to mess around with the 100 MB system reserved partition to get a DVD install of Windows 10 to run. I googled the error and I got redit. My laptop is downloading so I have to log out.

So win10 is installed now and running on desktop. However all of programs appear to be operating in some alternate dimension, except for sticky notes. When I try to open one I can see them working just fine in the preview thumbnail. But they are not visible on my desktop screen. Somebody help me please!

Good points...also remember this is labeled a beta and is definitely early release

I give up, I can't get this shit to install =\ Windows update just says its reserved, all the tips on reddit to force the dl does nothing at all. Tried the windows 10 downloader, it went through the long install process in windows, reset and failed during the black screen with the big circle for progress. Redownloaded the files with the app and burned a dvd, the dvd failed to install during that since twice during different parts, every fail with a separate useless code =\

Has anyone else been able to download any apps? I can't download Minecraft or Netflix yet. I keep getting 'Well this is embarrassing'.

I tried to download it manually, it started preparing my media files or some shit like that and then it crashed because of missing stuff or whatever. I then gave up, deleted those windows bt and windows ws folder and now I'm back to waiting for the official update

Go for reboot before trying to figure it out

Why would you roll back to Win 7 only to upgrade again? LOL! Either stay on 7 for the mean time or upgrade now and stay on 10. Servers getting hammered man!

Why do that anyway??

I had problems with my Nvidia display drivers not installing correctly at all, like a lot of other people have been experiencing. I tried everything and was stuck so I rolled back to 7 to see if that would solve the issues and it did, things are fine on Win 7.

And I thought it wouldn't be a problem to try 10 again to see if the driver issues were solved, but I guess not! I probably have to get onto a usb or disk and go that route. But fuck that, didn't feel like the upgrade is wholly worth the headache from the time I spent with it this morning.
