So.... is it free or not? Is it free to those that already own W7 and W8?

Yes. There's a year window for you to take advantage of the free upgrade. You own it, it's not a trial.

Is the upgrade really free?

Yes, it’s free. This is a full version of Windows, not a trial or introductory version. It is available for a limited time: you have one year from the time Windows 10 is available to take advantage of this offer.

If you upgrade within the first year - it's free. After that period, if you haven't upgraded yet, you will have to pay as usual.

However, it's still unclear what will happen if you will want to format and do a clean install: whether you will have to go Win7/8 -> update to Win10 route again, or will you be able to use your Win7/8 key to install Win10 right away.

havent got the update coming through for notifications checked all day. dont have the gwx folder either. im in uk running windows 7 home premium.

Has anyone read anything about upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit? I know it's not likely that it would be free, but it would be a nice surprise.

Not sure if I should upgrade as I'm happy with my current set up. Can't be bothered with the hassle right now. The offer's good though, but still have questions that need to be answered.

Or if the version you get is based on your current version.

Any idea how to get rid of the upgrade icon? I've already reserved my upgrade, so its job is done.

Are you up to date with Windows Updates? One of the recent updates was specifically for this. If you skipped that update I'm guessing that's a reason why some people aren't getting the notification. (I'm UK too and woke up to the notification).

Remove the relevant windows update that allowed the notification, restart - it's gone.

Update to remove is: KB3035583 - Google it, there are loads of pages talking about it.

you cant upgrade from technical preview.

Yes you can. They are going to push the build out like every other build they've been doing.

The background: On December 5, someone asked Microsoft's Gabe Aul—he's emerged as the face of the Windows Technical Preview—whether testers would be "able to update to the RTM version [of Windows 10] when it ships? Mr. Aul responded in the affirmative: "Yes, that is our intent."

Thank you.

Hopefully there will be a way to distill this "upgrade" into an ISO.

Windows is rubbish when it comes to upgrade.

not showing up on my legitimate W8 laptop

and still nothing to do on an illegitimate copy of windows 7, right?

im pretty sure you got till July 2016 to upgrade for free
You only have until July 29, 2016 to take advantage of this offer. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

let's say i upgrade from my win8 laptop to win10(updated to 8.1), if i decide to do a clean install later can i use a win10 disc or do i have to repeat the whole process again (win8>8.1>10)?

You can use an 8.1 ISO install with vanilla 8 keys now. Just do that.

So what's the point of reserving? I mean, you have a full year to upgrade and it's not like they're going to run out of keys..

I believe that even if you don't download it within the window if you reserved it you are good, or is that not true?

Anyone using the beta on surface pro 3? Wondering if I should wait awhile to make sure it doesn't actually screw stuff up.
