Newb Q: Anyone know whether the w10 installer would have the option to download the release as an ISO for UEFI usb install purposes? Worried that it would revert my GPT win8.1 install to MBR if it just does it's thing automatically...

This script has been running for hours on my machine and still no get windows 10 app. Hopefully they have another system set up for getting a copy of windows 10 besides this stupid app.
There are some additional troubleshooting steps in that post if that script doesn't work.
If the script is failing in an infinite loop, then you don’t have the necessary prerequisite Windows Updates.
Refer back to the post to see which ones are required for your OS.

Hoping for this too & leaning towards the answer to being yes (complete assumption & may have to be done through a different web page) but going by every OS release since 7 they have offered basically free ISOs while relying on the key to be what matters. So let's hope!

I'm using a windows 7 install from a laptop I had a few years ago. How do I trigger the win10 reservation notification?

Make sure your OS is fully updated, I was doing side work at a friend's office last night and saw two Win7 systems with the notification already up, so it's definitely hitting them.

The update preserves the GPT. It won't/can't switch to MBR (it preserves whatever boot method is used by the previous Windows install).

Ugh, I hope not. Having no control over what updates I apply will make me stick with 7.

Guess I'll be waiting several months to see how this all pans out.

I'm not exactly sure if the updates will be applied automatically, since it says "automatically available." It could mean Pro users are able to make the OS only check for updates manually, while Home users have the OS constantly checking for updates and notifying them.

Who gets Windows 10 Pro from upgrades:

This corrected me. With pro, you can defer upgrades.

Ohh. 8.1 Student Pro upgrades to 10 Pro as well :). Granted I'll still have a Dreamspark account when 10 hits but still

Yeah I did this too. It seems my KB295266something one failed, and I've used multiple ways to confirm I have SP1 for windows 7 installed (which is the KB303something one which is the other prerequisite) and it still won't install that KB295one for me. It tells me its not compatible with my computer (which its only suppose to say if you don't have SP1). I've also tried about 15 different things to get Windows Update to re-see the failed updates and it won't.

MS needs another system than this bullshit for people with genuine Windows 7 installs to get Windows 10.

I was doing remote support earlier for a client and saw that little icon, wondered what it was! It's not coming up on my machine quite yet but I will be taking the free upgrade, I would prefer to do a fresh install rather than an upgrade though so will see what happens with that.

Hmm, so I agreed to the upgrade but it didnt ask me for my email address, it simply says im ready.

I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate OEM, so a bit confused...

I just bought a new Laptop with windows 8.1.

Am I eligible for the free upgrade?

Edit: Haven't got the pop up where you get asked if you want to opt in yet.

It took about 24 hours for my email to show up, i recon the automated email system is just being hammered.

Weird, I never got an email. I just figured they don't send one since the Get Windows 10 thing has a confirmation page on it, and on the update page in control panel it also shows windows 10 upgrade reserved.

So do I get an automatic update for this or do I need to preregister somewhere?

The reservation app should just come as part of Windows Update.

Went from 8 to 8.1, still no notification for me to upgrade to 10 :(

Make sure 8.1 is all the way updated. If you just updated, there are likely additional updates waiting.

Also, if you guys aren't seeing the reservation app, the site says it will show up for everyone on the 29th regardless. One potential reason is if Windows detects any potential compatibility issues, it will hold off until the 29th so it can walk you through the process. Don't worry though, you don't need to reserve right now to get the actual upgrade. You'll have until July 29th, 2016 to do the upgrade for free, so you have lots of time.

So it looks like the best way to do a completely clean install initially is going to be:

Upgrade your current OS.

After Windows 10 boots up, go into settings and choose "reset PC"

Its not sounding like their will be a quick easy way to port or Win 8 keys for a fresh clean install, Unless I'm mistaken?

So you could at least do a clean install after the initial upgrade; not sure about straight from 7/8.1.

Awesome, thanks for posting that. So I guess once you've upgraded, it validates your key for a clean install?

Got my free upgrade reserved my three year-old Win7 laptop. I'm actually mostly looking forward to trying out Edge, been yearning for a new browser to play around with.

Woo, got Win 10 notification at work and promptly clicked.
This PC will likely be formatted before then anyway. Or actually, we might refresh the system after the update.

Going to check on my home desktop and Win 8.1 tablet when i get home.

I've installed all the updates on Windows 8.1 after recently doing a fresh installation but I'm not getting the symbol at the bottom. Is there anything I can do to make it come up?

Not sure if this has been posted, but for those having issues with getting it to pop up on their system, and they're positive they have all the correct updates, try this:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...10-but-i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b

Inside there is a command line script that you can create that will run. It will look like the script keeps on looping(apparently it can even take from 10-30 minutes, but it popped up after a few minutes for me), but eventually it should stop on its own, and then the Reservation icon will show up. Make sure when you create the script, you right click it and run as Administrator.

Thanks to a fellow GAFfer for this :)

Thanks for posting this. Happy someone from MS actually posted a nice response like this. I'll try it out when I get home.

I don't get it. Tried this, and tried the slighly changed version from the pages comments. Still nothing for me. My copy of Win7 is genuine, has SP1 installed and the only update missing is an IE one that it just doesn't want to install whatsoever.

I don't wanna miss out ;_;

I went to the settings in Windows update and turned on "Give me updates for other Microsoft products" and then it decided to work.

What I'm thinking of trying to do is resetting my computer. I have to wait till I'm home for that.
