Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I don't get it. Tried this, and tried the slighly changed version from the pages comments. Still nothing for me. My copy of Win7 is genuine, has SP1 installed and the only update missing is an IE one that it just doesn't want to install whatsoever.

I don't wanna miss out ;_;

Hmm, how long did you let the script loop? Apparently for some it may take longer. Mine worked after about 4-5 minutes but a good friend of mine took about 15-20.

Also, check to see if any of updates in your updates history Failed. For example, my update KB2952664 failed when trying to install it alongside a ton of other optional updates. So what I did was go to the Installed updates list(had to let it load first) then right click and uninstalled KB2952664. Then once it uninstalled, I clicked "restart later" and then clicked Check for Updates. When it finishes, KB2952664 will be present and you can install that on its own. I was able to do this on both my laptop and desktop.

All in all, it looks like Microsoft messed this rollout up, I'm not surprised :P

My problem was i didn't have internet explore r 11 installed srraight after i installed windows update gave the latest update

I like 7 so much that I don't want to do this :-(

But this will be as close to 7 as you can get with the added improvements of 8.1 with even further improvements.
So do I upgrade to Win10 right away or hold off for a while until patches happen?

This! I don't care if it's not 100% feature complete, but if it's stable and has proper driver support (which it seems to do for all of my devices anyway) I'd jump over as fast as possible. I didn't even have issues with the Win8 preview

For those asking: I have had zero issues with this preview so far. It's faster than W8.1 and looks a hundred times better too. Love the UI!

Weird, I never got an email. I just figured they don't send one since the Get Windows 10 thing has a confirmation page on it, and on the update page in control panel it also shows windows 10 upgrade reserved.

Yeah i got the notification the first day and I still haven't gotten an email

DX12 is a day 1 release with this, right?

It didn't loop at all. It went something something successful and was done.

excuse the partial german, ERFOLGREICH would be "successful". That's all it does.

Only failed updates is one IE11 update that just won't go through whatsoever. All actual windows updates seem fine.

Damn, sorry. :/ I wonder if that dumb IE11 update is whats giving you an issue, but I doubt it. Somebody a few posts above mentioned something about IE11 triggering it but I'm not sure.

Honestly I've upgraded and it's pretty solid, I'm a 7 lover too.

One big problem is the programs list in the start menu, the space for programs is huge therefore there is only like 7 on screen at one time, compared to 7 which showed like 20 at a time, same thing with the network list, a lot of the items are big for no reason.

Just because I said I had zero issues... right after installing 10130, I got a blue screen (I got the same screen literally dozens of times on Win 8.1, always related to the wireless adapter), rebooted the system, and now I'm always prompted to define Chrome as my default browser, but it won't load Google or my google account. It says "privacy error". "Your connection isn't private"... what the hell?

I'm probably in the minority here but I really liked Metro in Windows 8.

It is such nice, clean page to boot Windows to. I have all my games and important applications without having to look at the desktop - which is harder to keep clean.

Will there be Metro in Windows 10?

Right click on the icons and go to "resize." Assuming you're talking about the Modern bit on the right, rather than the "most used" section.

The All Apps/Programs part, left side of the menu, I'm sure it's big for touch users but it just makes navigating worse for me.

Ah, you mean the all apps stuff. Well, if you don't want to pin anything to the right hand side of the menu, clicking on any of the letter group headings will let you jump to any letter.

Got it running by getting the one update and now it's there. Also, will this upgrade my OS off the bat or won't change anything until July 29th? Should I back up anything before I do this?

I have Windows 10 reserved. I'm using 7.

How is Windows 10 on an SSD?

I got an SSD back in 2012 and while some things do seem faster, I can't tell a huge difference from when I was using a mechanical drive.

I made sure to set it up properly in the BIOS and I've ran benchmarks on it and my speeds are what they should be.

Will Windows 10 be faster?

Turn it off for a while and let it cool down. BSODs these days are more related to actual hardware failing

It wasn't. After I uninstalled Chrome it simply crashed and wouldn't restart. So I asked to restore the system, and... it installed 10130 again, deleting all the apps. Well, I had to install everything again, but at least now Chrome is working properly.

I'm holding onto Windows 7 for at least a year daggumit. I still haven't forgotten what it was like to be an early adopter of Vista.

Something must be wrong with your SSD. My SSD boots up my 7 machine in under 10 seconds, which is a huge difference from any mechanical drive I have ever seen. All programs launch instantly as well.

Do we know how the reserved copies for Windows 7/8 users work? Is the cd key going to get tied to our Microsoft account? I am curious as to why some of you would go and buy 7 for cheap when they say that even pirated users get 10 for free. I'm guessing that would even include people who install Windows 7 without any CD key and using the 30 day trial.

did you install your OS on SSD? I mean difference is huge, literally huge.

I think I might be in a similar situation as I had Windows 7 installed on a hard disk, then upgraded to Windows 8 on a solid state drive. BIOS only shows the HDD, so I guess it boots through that and not the SSD.

Just to be clear, the term Metro simply referred to simplistic gradient-less design, with flat iconography and clean typography. A design trend which is now very popular in all major OS's and on the web. So yes, that still exists in Windows 10.

But to actually give you the answer you're looking for, the full screen version of the start menu that you liked in Windows 8 is still available in Windows 10. It's just no longer the default view for desktops or laptops, it works a little differently and it's now called tablet mode. This video gives you a brief look at how it works in one of the more recent builds

Yes.

And I've ran multiple benchmark tests and my read/write speeds are what they should be.

It takes around 15-20 seconds to load Windows once I see the flag animation. I've seen videos on Youtube of boot times with the same SSD I have where the animation didn't even have time to finish. Mine is nowhere near that fast.

Maybe my processor is holding me back? Also I'm using SATA 2 and don't know how big of difference that makes.

I have windows 10 reserved through the app.

How would formatting before the upgrade work? I imagine since this is just 3GB upgrade I could not use it for a format. So best route would be do it before with my current windows 7 and upgrade on release?

Any other methods?

I assume you can disable the huge search bar on the task bar?

Looking at the new Start Menu... I think I'll switch to the Start Screen. I have to admit, I 100% converted to the screen after using 8.1 for a while. I basically use it as a big shortcut menu. I removed all the "Modern" apps and just pin my most used apps. So much quicker than using the old start menu.

The only thing I miss from the 7 Start Menu is the option to have a Control Panel sub-menu (so accessing all the different items in the Control Panel without having to open the panel itself).

That's about how long it takes me as well though I also have the login active so that probably slows things down a bit.

I have login turned on on my pc as well. Maybe that is part of it. I never thought about that.

My pc certainly isn't slow though. Everything is pretty fast. Sometimes a program will take 4-5 seconds to open but that doesn't happen very often.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Windows 10 is. I've been using 7 for 5 years now and change will be nice.

It could be a wonky driver or application loading at startup that may be holding you up. Sata2 is slower than current 3s but if it's an ssd it should boot faster than 10s. My 6 year old HP pavilion with a standard HDD boots in less than 10 without an ssd or modern uefi bios. Age might have something to do with it... Maybe.

Does your bios support uefi? Did you do a windows install in uefi mode and format your ssd to GPT not MBR? Uefi installs are faster at boot than legacy bios installs.

I'm not sure about the GPT or MBR thing since it's been 3 years since I installed it and can't remember. The only thing I know I did was to make sure that it was in AHCI mode.

Not sure what uefi is but just checked online and my motherboard doesn't support it.

OK. Could just be that it's aged a bit. Maybe your boot time is reasonable for your current setup. A clean install/refresh may improve things.

Yes the Start Screen is beautiful. I wonder if you can set Windows 10 to boot to the Start Screen as default as opposed to launching directly to the desktop.

I can't decide if I should make the upgrade, I'll need to know if 3ds Max 2016 and Adobe CS5 programs will work fine on it.

Got my Tablet running windows 8.1 but still no pop up...Got all update types ticked and everything but nothing. Any idea if they are rolling the reserve periodically?

There's an insider preview that you can install and test right now. For free.

Unfortunately, the new Start Screen, as it is now (build 10130), is worse compared to what it was in Windows 8.1. There's a lot of wasted free space there (on monitor 1680x1050px I can set up up to three 4-tiles wide columns in start menu, but for some reason only two columns on the start screen) and I find horizontal scrolling in Win8 superior to vertical scrolling in Win10. Also, all apps list made a lot more sense in Windows 8 (full screen) than in Windows 10 (just a vertical list on the left side of the screen).

You also can't select a designated background for it (you're either stuck with one-colored background or a semi-transparent background showing your wallpaper.

There's also no option to boot to the Start Screen.

I'm sure they'll work fine, but in case they don't there's a Win 8.1 compatibility mode that should cover it.

Edit - and what Mr Zombie said.
