What date do you have to reserve by? I'm doing a new build in August but my windows 7 doesn't qualify. I have an 8.1 pro that does but I don't want to do a reload just for that lol.

That was an interesting run but it's definitely not a daily build yet, which is obviously fine. Icons randomly disappear, apps crash and close, and deleting items has a noticeable delay in windows explorer. But I can see myself using the final version.

I think it depends on how many of the other components are still there. If it's still majority original hardware, you're good. Traditionally, I think Windows licenses are good for... 2 computers? Maybe. So you might be covered in any case.

CPU change usually triggers a license check.

if you want to update day one you can reserve untill 29 july 2015 to be able to install it on release day.
and you have untill 29 july 2016 to update for free, after that you need to pay.
reload what do you mean? its an upgrade you will keep all your programs and files.

internet explorer? running an older build?

this has probably been answered but here goes

I have a boxed copy of Windows 7 with a retail key. I've reinstalled it a few times over the years when I upgrade or need a refresh. The Windows 10 upgrade mentions "device" a lot so I'm wondering it it's a one time thing that only applies to the current device or is it an upgrade I can keep?

For example: say I build a new computer in few years I would be able to install my current copy of Windows 7 no problem but what happens to the Windows 10 upgrade? I assume I would need to buy it, right?

I made the reservation and I would like to install the preview, but I'm worried about what will happen when the upgrade is released and I'm not on Windows 7.

edit: decided to dive into the preview, downloading it now. I have a windows desktop hooked up to a TV and the metro app interface will be welcome in my setup.

Anyone with a windows 8.1 tablet here been given the win10 upgrade yet?

I know they call that copy of windows "Windows 8.1 with bing" but it's pretty much the same as 8.1 home, the bing part doesn't change anything with how the system works.
Yes my wife's Acer 8.1 tablet with bing got it the day of release. She surprisingly kept up with the updates.

Welp, after, like, three days of constantly refreshing Windows Update, running .bat files, installing and uninstalling Windows updates from decrepit Microsoft websites that only work in IE, and digging in the task scheduler and just in general racking my fucking mind over what could possibly be wrong with my copy of Windows, the update icon decided to just flip on by itself even though I uninstalled one of the Windows Updates that was apparently necessary to trigger it.

H...hooray.

No windows explorer, what you view files in. It's slower compared to my W7 install, the right click menu, deleting files, etc.

ah must have misread xD i didnt have a slow windows explorer, did you install your drivers? get the win8.1 drivers from your motherboard manufacturer (or win10 if available). win10 works just as smooth as win7 for me after i installed those also make sure your hard drives are set to AHCI in the BIOS.

I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu from two drives, using GRUB from the Ubuntu drive.

Will this upgrade fuck with my bootloader? Is it too soon to tell?

I'm thinking of just disconnecting the Ubuntu drive for the upgrade.

Yes, just like upgrading to 8, Windows will override GRUB. You'll need to reconfigure the boot loader, but there are lots of instructions on the web on how to do it.

Ok then. I'll unplug that drive when I upgrade.

Then reconfigure. Don't want Windows touching what doesn't belong to it.

I have a concern regarding my free copy.

Currently I am on Win 7 and am on a 7200 rpm HDD. I want to put a SSD drive in my PC and want to do a clean install on it with Windows 10. What are my options? Can I grab an iso and do I get a Windows 10 CD key and go that way? Or is my only option to install Windows 7 on the SSD fully upgrade it and then do a clean install upgrade to Windows 10?

Just rolled back from the 10 preview to Windows 7 to make sure I get the free update.

How long does it take the reserve icon to show up? I installed, all updates, and have a legit OEM Windows 7 key and the hardware supports Windows 10, since I was just running it.

I'm in the same boat. I have a legitimate OEM copy of win7 home premium, but I've also run the first three options on the little tool that's been created to make sure you have all the necessary updates. I passed every little check but the icon still isn't popping up. There might be some stupid hidden option I ticked off that is blocking it perhaps, but it's a bit frustrating. I should meet all the criteria and can't get the upgrade icon to pop up.

There's probably a random timed component to it, nothing to stress over considering you have a year and probably won't need that to actually update.

Cleanest you'll probably get is installing Windows 7 on the new SSD and then do the update from there before anything else, assuming it doesn't require you doing all the W7 updates before the W10 update.

Huh, my little windows icon disappeared. And just when I was getting used to it sitting in my taskbar. Is that normal? I've already reserved and got the reservation email.

Noticed mine gone from my desktop PC this morning. Windows update still has the "Windows 10 upgrade reserved" message. Icon still there on my laptop, but I haven't restarted it recently.

I have Win7 on an SSD. I want to upgrade my Motherboard/processor.

What is the best way/time to do that with Windows 10 coming in a month?

Sorry for the noob question. Never cloned a HD before.

Same, on both my laptop and desktop, each with legitimate copies of Win7.

Don't try to clone Windows for a new motherboard.
You're going to want a fresh install for that.

I'm running the Enterprise Insider Preview but I'm a little concerned as to what I'll do on the 29th. I'm using a laptop given to me by my college I have since graduated from.

So I got a new Surface 3 and am wondering how to reserve my spot for Windows 10. Apparently a windows symbol is supposed to appear in the task bar on the desk top where you reserve your copy? I don't have this... how do I get it?

I refreshed my computer twice, then reset it. (Windows 8)

Finally had to take it into repair to get a new hard drive.

The icon for Windows 10 reserve never took longer than 48 hours to show up in all 3 cases.

Have you installed every possible update Windows has offered? If you have, not sure.

Mine isn't gone on W7, I just installed the three optional updates I had available and all that's left is Skype and fuck Skype.

Yea I installed every posible update and the button still didnt show up so I ended up installing the tech preview to make sure I get it day one.

Really liking the new edge browser but win 10 in general has this weird split second lag in everything you do that is driving me insane. Anyone else have that problem?

I don't have it, but maybe that's the OS tracking your inputs and mouse movement.

I'm now on Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 and yet I don't see the "get windows 10 app" on my taskbar. Is there something I'm missing?

It took a couple days for mine to show up after updating everything. I just set my PC to install updates automatically after updating everything manually, and it showed up eventually.

I see. It says that the Windows update must be enabled. I guess that's the one I'm missing.

Yeah I've installed all the most recent updates now on my Surface 3 and still no icon. It looks like I should...

...wait a few days, and just leave it on auto install?

I'm beginning to have a grim feeling that Windows 8.1 was our 9 and this is one of the bad ones. Hopefully the release version is significantly improved from 10074.

This is why I am sticking with Windows 7. I tried Windows 10 and it reminded me much too much of 8 and vista so I went back to 7.
