Catalyst Control Center doesn't wanna load, always says host application stopped working.
I had a similar issue with my new catalyst driver install. Uninstall catalyst in add/remove, restart and try installing again. Sorted things out for me. I'm also rooting for parity in the pc cpu/3dgraphics market.

Just installed W10. Was going to wait, but I got curious. First impression is nice. Looks really clean. Using Edge now, are there plugins at all?

I'm willing to give it a try but without my plugins I'll probably head back to Firefox before the end of the day.

Plugins and extensions are coming later. They will not be part of Edge on Windows 10 initial release..

Huh did they fix the Nvidia driver problem? it just auto installed for me again and this time there's no issue :S Geforce see;s my GPU fine it doesn't say there;s an update either anymore.

I'll probably wait until I install my new Skylake build. No point. I'll just have to install it again anyways.

If i get a new HDD let's say or want to do a full format and use my windows 8.1 disc and everything will it just automatically update back to W10 once connected to the internet? Is it tied to your windows account or something?

oh ok are all games compatible or is just a few right now? I mostly hoping that Killer Instinct is compatiable. Also am I forced to use the Xbox one controller or can I use a different controller on the pc.

All it's doing is just taking the output from the Xbox and streaming it to your PC, so yes every game is compatible. And yeah, you're also forced to use an XB1 controller. The streaming won't even start until it's recognised that you've plugged one in.

No, you're not.

Xbox 360 controller works just fine.

And since it streams any Xbox One game, that also means you can stream 360 BC games.

Hmm I wonder if it's going to be easy to fake controller input with mouse+keyboard. Those adapters are kinda cheaty already on consoles.

It's tied to your hardware and microsoft account.
Microsoft hasn't definitely said what happens to your Windows 7 or 8 key once you upgrade to 7. If they mark it in some way then you won't be able to activate and use Windows7/8 any more presumably.

But, if you were in this situation and have already upgraded to windows 10 why would you want to reformat using an 8.1 disc? Just use a Windows 10 file to format and reinstall.

I'm in a situation where I have a 1TB SSD drive that I recently purchased waiting to be put into my system.

Currently I have Windows 8.1 in a 250GB drive, this is the drive that I will be replacing with the new one.

My issue is, I want to know if it is possible to download the Win10 ISO and do a completely clean install in my drive. Do I just go ahead and put Win 8.1 in the new drive and then upgrade to Win 10 on Tuesday? Or is there a way for me skip that step and do a clean install. I can't find the answer to this question anywhere.

We don't know Microsoft hasn't said if they will issue any licences that way. It is phased anyone and there is no guarantee everyone will be able to get it on tuesday.

The only way we can definitely say works currently is to upgrade from 7 or 8 first, so that your hardware is linked to an activated windows 10 copy. You can then do a clean install, skip any requests for a CD key and it will automatically activate once it has run some checks and is connected.

It's even built in to the OS with the refresh and reset options.

I was a bit worried today that some update or maybe download in the background for Win10 had messed up my computer. It started to act up after last night and wouldn't load proper. It was probably something else but for awhile there began to wonder.

So I decided to upgrade my Windows 7 Professional installation on my MacBook Air using my 10240 iso, and it went well - I now have a properly activated copy of Windows 10. Just gotta get the touchpad working.
As for my other Lenovo laptop, I'll wait for the upgrade notification.

I disabled the gfx card driver auto updates but it again pulled that shit just now when I was away for dinner. I came back to a "driver installation failed" msg and everything runs like shit right now.

Is there any official word if this is a windows preview thing and wont be a problem on the release because otherwise I am going to go buy a mac or go back to win 8.

I got that failed install msg also, but it actually did install it after I rebooted.

Also have fun with the mac if you're a gamer.

I am but more important than games I do my living doing 3d vfx. Graphic card driver updates potentially and usually break things in the applications I use. It is the last thing I want in an OS.

Well, have fun with that. Mac's aren't exactly know for there graphic horsepower.

After looking, the best you can get on a iMac, and only on the 27 inch mac is a Radeon R9 M295X, a laptop GPU. You could get a Mac Pro with there workstation cards, but that's starting at 3K.

If you don't want forced updates, the Enterprise edition of Windows 10 is a lot cheaper than a Mac.

Just wondering, is there any way to upgrade early? Going somewhere and I can't bring my XBO and was hoping to use the streaming service on my laptop.

"Unlike other editions or versions of Windows, Windows 10 Enterprise will only be available as part of Microsoft's volume licensing program. As such, it won't be available in traditional retail channels. Enterprise users with volume licensing contracts and Software Assurance will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 when it is ready. "

So don't update from 8.1 straight away? You have a year for the free upgrade, and 8.1 will still be fine after that too. Plenty of time for MS to tweak how they handle things.

If you use your computer for a living, then upgrading to a brand new OS on day one probably isn't a good idea generally.

Btw, how is win 10 on tablets? I've read a few things that make it sound a little less touch friendly?

Wasnt really sure if i was going to upgrade from 7 to 10 but my pc has been acting up a little recently so i backed everything up and was going to format it but decided to just upgrade to 10 and then format it once 10 is installed. Figured it would be good to get a fresh start and hopefully the quicker boot up times etc. will help out a lot on top of the clean start.

If that doesnt fix my issues i may have to buy a new pc though but we shall see how it goes on Wednesday.

There are tons of reasons to upgrade from 7. You should've upgraded from 7 to 8.1. Anyone staying behind is either using their PC for work or just too stubborn to change.

I never upgraded from 7, I would have had to pay for 8 which by all accounts was a garbage fire, so when 8.1 rolled around I passed as well.

which isn't really that much money for anyone who uses it as an actual work machine.

anywho:

I have a spare 250gig SSD on my desk right now and i have nothing to do.
Would you guys recommend:

* installing 8.1 -> 10 on the SSD (thereby a reasonably 'fresh' install) to have it "unlock" (and update to release version) for me in a few days
* or wait until next weekend? (and then going 8.1 -> 10 on the old SSD, and doing a fresh 10 when my Windows 10 license has been ... authenticated?)

seeing as the 8.1 -> 10 upgrade is free, i'm wondering how much of a hassle it will be to get a fresh installation of 10 going (8.1 -> 10 -> replace OS ssd -> fresh 10) and whether or not, and if so, when, it will validate my previous free "upgrade" license of windows 10?

I speak of apple and boogeymen appear.

And that was a good decision. I was shocked when i realized that there are people who genuinely think that Windows 8 or 8.1 is better than 7. Boot speed isnt everthing.

I would just wait the 3 days, then upgrade and do a reset.

But i'm off work and bored! :(

how does the 8.1 -> 10 license upgrade work btw.
Will i be able to re-use my 8.1 key on another machine? (if not, i can just buy one for 0$ via Dreamspark / University).
Will the 10 license be tied to my Microsoft / Live account?
