Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

The different sizes could be due to your language that comes with your installs of Windows (en-US, en_GB, etc.), the version of Windows (Home, Professional), along with drivers that may be slipstreamed into your ESDs.

Just a guess.

If you guys can't wait, go get the ESD from Microsoft matching the version (Home, Pro) you have now, convert it to ISO, and upgrade.

Grrh, I still don't have that reserve icon, I've installed all the updates, tried doing the code thing. I have a genuine copy of Windows 8.1 Pro. I must be doing something wrong. I guess I'll try again tomorrow :/

ive no icon either, the BT folder just says larger than 3.91 gb :(

All downloaded now. However can not install until MS actually lets you, but at least its ready. Hopefully its not too staggered :/

wait a minute, is 10240 like the final RTM build or will something else be downloaded later today?

The build being downloaded is the same file which has been out for over a week, 10240.16384. The installer downloads additional patches (KB3074683) to get it up to 10240.16405 which is the latest build.
Some countries have already had the release now and there is nothing else.

So I have the BT folder, but it's only 57mb - what's the deal?

On the other hand my HD space has gone down by 5gb in the last 10mins :/

It's great that they don't have the Media Feature Pack available for download for us that uses the N version. Can't use the Game DVR function without it. =/

That reminds me, what GPU do I get to make the best of DX12? I haven't kept up. I'm NOT into bleeding edge 4K or even 1440p. I want something that can handle 1080p. So my budget's around 150 dollars. I own a HD 7850 right now. I heard some confusing info on existing GPUs supporting DX12.

Worked for me instantly!

16% and counting

Likewise. Even fully updated and doing manual update checks weren't starting the download, typing that in worked straight away.

My pc had a delayed reserve icon and my windows tablet only had one pop up last weekend, what I did notice is that the window you get telling you about the upgrade has been updated compared to what it was a month ago so maybe they improved the checker software they use to make sure your pc is compatable.

There was a way to force it.

Just got here but does that mean if I have that windows bt folder means that windows 10 is already downloaded on my pc and I just have to wait till midnight to install?

Run this shit as administrator dude. Try option 1 (worked for me). It's a batch file provided by a Microsoft community moderator with some quick command line fixes. It just edits the registry to get the icon to appear. I ran the batch file, selected option 1 and the icon appeared instantly.

Got it from this article: http://techdows.com/2015/06/how-to-enable-get-windows-10-app-icon-windows-7-or-8-1-taskbar.html

I'm downloading some updates right now and one of them is KB3035583. Does this mean that I'll be able to get Windows 10 when it activates?

Wait for a refresh.

Ah cool, I'm all up to date then

I can't even get update kb2952664 to install, it just constantly fails and no win10.

guess no Killer Instinct or Gears of War for me

GUYS! QUICK UPDATE FOR THOSE DOING THE wuauclt.exe /updatenow:

It may not be the case for everyone, but my experience led me to believe Windows Update needs to automatically download and install updates for this to work. I had it set to not do so originally, which is why I couldn't get the Windows 10 update.

MAKE SURE YOUR UPDATE SETTINGS ALLOW WINDOWS TO DO ITS DUTY!

*ahem*

carry on folks. :3

It hasn't worked for me. Reserved from day 1. I have all Windows 8.1 updates, restarted computer, activated automatic updates, done the wuauclt.exe /updatenow thing. no download at all. My laptop already downloaded the whole thing, though, and I didn't even have it updated. I guess I'll wait until tomorrow and see.

Not sure if it has been mentioned already. But if you own Minecraft you can download Minecraft for Windows 10 beta already. It won't show up on the store you need to redeem the game via the account page on the Mojang website. I am actually shocked on how well it runs and looks on my Surface Pro 3.

Whoa, this worked for me. Downloading now.

I am 6.33 and I am going to assume I am done despite that failed state in Windows Update.

Yeah I got the same thing. It was almost finished then "Failed update" and an error code. My Windows BT folder is ~5.22 gb? It says to just restart to finish the update process though so I might try that and see if the BT folder reaches completion when I boot up again.

Worked.

Changed it to automatically download and install (then it went to check for updates). Once that was done, I went into the admin command prompt and used the command (wuauclt.exe /updatenow)

Upgraded to windows 10 on my laptop, currently blue screening with internal power error as the message. Gonna try reverting the video card drivers, (AMD Integrated). Already reset hibernation data and power settings to make sure no faulty settings carried over.

Yeah, still doesn't work. When the update works for you, remember that you're one of hundreds of thousands to millions of users. Microsoft is a giant software company. They aren't going to deploy a software update to all end users simultaneously or from some system clock change because their size and experience doesn't allow such novice mistakes. You probably had success because whatever organizational area or deployment method greenlit you.

Edit: Though I may be giving Microsoft too much credit. It could just be a peak load allowance thing by design. I see dozens of failed update Windows 10 Pro entries in my log. Perhaps I should just create a simple Powershell for loop.

I am 6.33 and I am going to assume I am done despite that failed state in Windows Update.

According to reddit the failed state is normal:

EDIT THE FINAL: Yup, I think we figured it out. If the following show up for you, i'm very very sure you will update tomorrow:
•If you get a last installed update failed and listed as Upgrade to Home/Pro (credit /u/NateJagger)

If this requirement is met, you should be in the first wave of people able to get Windows 10 from the get go. Congrats.

If not, we will have to investigate further ;)

That about covers up. Time to wake up tomorrow and see if I was anywhere near with all this speculation.

This man's corporate policy probably forbids him to explain why, but I'm guessing because it's futile for the logistical, rational reasons I explained above. Though thank you for sharing as much as you have, dLMN8R. I've also heard that post-RTM driver signing requirements were delayed, which seems pretty prudent given the aggressive RTM deadline.

It's upgrading now, the PC rebooted and now I have a big circle with % done. Will I be able to make an ISO from the files I have or will I need to wait for Microsoft to upload them? I want to clean install once it has finished upgrading.

Well, I guess it's happening for some people.

What kind of alert did you get before it started the final upgrade process?

I believe you can make an ISO to perform a clean update.

If you aren't trying to do a clean install on a different hard drive then just do a reset, it is the same thing.

If not there are direct links to the esd files from windowsupdate.com which you can convert into ISOs to do a clean install. Just make sure you pick the right version, language, x64, x86 etc.

Got the hidden folder now. That update command prompt trick and that windows update that I just installed probably both helped make it easier for the folder to appear.Don't have a size for the folder yet.

Windows update finished downloading then I got a pop up asking if I wanted to upgrade now or later, I hit now and the PC rebooted and started to copy over the files. It's currently stuck on a black screen so hopefully that's normal :D

where is the folder located? to see if something downloaded

ahh i found my BT folder, its 3.03 gb to small to force the install im guess right ?

On my Windows 7 pc I noticed that there were updates available.

I opened Windows update and Windows explorer crashed and restarted.

I tried again. This time it opened and one important update was installed but four optional updates failed.

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come? :p
