How long is the "Preparing for the Upgrade -- Please wait" screen supposed to load? Mine's been going on 15 minutes...

Hope this jump starts development of Windows Apps, because there's a dearth of apps that you think would be there by now.

Fun fact: the setup program used when you pick "Update", at least using the Media Creation Tool, seems to pick its language based on the good ol' Non-Unicode Programs Language setting. So if like me, you're on Windows 7 (or older?) and you changed that years ago to play misbehaving Japanese games, make sure you switch it back or Windows will threaten not to keep all of your apps.

So I reserved a copy of Windows 10 on my Windows 8 installation, but decided to jump into the insider preview about a month ago...

At this point I want to do a fresh install of Windows 10 and have several Windows 7 & 8 serial keys. If I download the ISO using the OP's link and reinstall it on my system will I be able to use my 7 & 8 serial keys to activate Windows 10 after I do the fresh install, or do I need to install windows 7 or 8 first and then go though the "upgrade" process in order to be able to activate my serials?

So my windowsBT folder has 16.966 files.
I have a failed win10 update in the control panel (had to look for it, no notification).
And an empty folder appeared on my desktop that cannot be opened and when deleting it, it says it's an icon and I can enable it later from the control panel.

Win 7 64 bit.

WTF is going on???

I keep getting this error message when I do the command line force update.

I have all updates installed on 8.1 64 Bit.

Help.

Holy shit, i am like the biggest Microsoft consumer-product-nerd, registered for windows 10 the first day and now I don't even have the $windows bt whatever-folder. I want to install windows 10 asap, but I had such a shifty day, I'm really not in the mood for forcing the update with some tricks, that may or may not work. Holy shot. Can I please just have w10, Microsoft?

Finally succeed at forcing the update:

1) Deleted the "C:\$Windows.~BT" folder and the content of the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder.

2) Refreshed Windows Update and installed an small ~100KB Windows Defender package.

3) Entered the command "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" in the cmd.exe as an Administrator.

Hopefully the rest of the process will go smoothly.
I still get this error after it says "Checking requirements", then the second image when I run the troubleshooter.

Maybe I should also delete the $Windows.~WS folder?

So my taskbar doesn't work, can't right click any of my icons (I want to get rid of that store button) and the action center doesn't work.

Think I'm just gonna end up clean installing.

Tried to do Media Creation upgrade; got to first reboot. Reboot occurred, nothing appeared on monitor. Waited a suitable amount of time, tried a shutdown, booted up again, "Restoring your Previous Version of Windows". I mean, that's better than totally deleting everything at random, but not ideal.

Edit: Never mind, looks like restore is fucked up, logged in to Windows and not getting any desktop allllriiiiight

You can't use a W7/8 key with W10, you need to upgrade an existing 7/8 install.

Try start>regedit>hkey local machine>component>delete or rename pending registry. Restart and try again. Worked for me.

Now it is downloading the update again, but not error anymore.

When i put W10 on a flash drive and it finished it told me i would need a key when i do a new install but i never got a key?

I updated via the downloadable ISO (i gave the "upgrade reservation" 24 hours to come back after my fresh install of 8.1) and now Win 10 won't activate ... are the servers just super busy and this is a common issue?

cba to set up my rig only to have to go back to 8.1 and patiently wait for the regular upgrade path.
