Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Used the download tool on my Winbook TW801. So far so good. The only thing it needed was a USB drive to store some data for the install.

Edge has a few issues here and there but its way better than IE. Once they get those add-ons working, it will be pretty solid.

Yeah, it's going to be hard for anything to replace Chrome for me at this point, but this is definitely making me realize that Chrome has been ugly and in need of an update for awhile. Love how smooth everything is in Edge.

How do I change the transparency and the saturation of the colors? Apparently it was possible under the "colors" submenu under "personalization. Can't seem to find it now, any hints?

GAF. Help. I have some questions!

My laptop was running Windows 8.1 from Dell.

I want to reformat my entire drive, and install Windows 10 fresh.

I can do a reformat with the USB tool right?

I thought windows 8 OEM keys are stored in the BIOS or someplace? Do I need a product key to do a fresh install on my Dell laptop?

Or will it just work from the USB device without a product key? Has anybody done a reformat and install from the USB?

I'm just afraid I'll reformat my harddrive and then lose my Dell OEM windows license.

I don't want to upgrade rather I would like to just do a clean install of windows 10. Does the upgrade prompt on the taskbar going to give me this option?

Is there any way to change what programs Cortana opens things in? For example when I say "Play Music", can I configure her to open Winamp instead of the default app?

You wont lose the OEM license. I would upgrade to Windows 10 first and then refresh the PC to make it a bit easier.

So far so good. Only issue was Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines not running. Saying I didn't have permissions and to lig in as administrator which I am sooooo....

Also takes forever to restart my computer

Oh lovely, Oculus doesn't support Windows 10 yet either.

I actually thought it would be the smoothest Windows upgrade yet - but Windows 8 actually went better.

I had this problem but it was due to an incompatibility with the Etron USB chipset. Intel USB ports are fine but the Etron one doesn't seem compatible yet. Disabling it solved those issues for me. Maybe something similar is happening on your end (an incompatible piece of hardware)?

Anyone else concerned by this?

As you use Windows, we collect performance and usage information that helps us identify and troubleshoot problems as well as improve our products and services. We recommend that you select Full for this setting.

Basic information is data that is vital to the operation of Windows. This data helps keep Windows and apps running properly by letting Microsoft know the capabilities of your device, what is installed, and whether Windows is operating correctly. This option also turns on basic error reporting back to Microsoft. If you select this option, we’ll be able to provide updates to Windows (through Windows Update, including malicious software protection by the Malicious Software Removal Tool), but some apps and features may not work correctly or at all.

Enhanced data includes all Basic data plus data about how you use Windows, such as how frequently or how long you use certain features or apps and which apps you use most often. This option also lets us collect enhanced diagnostic information, such as the memory state of your device when a system or app crash occurs, as well as measure reliability of devices, the operating system, and apps. If you select this option, we’ll be able to provide you with an enhanced and personalized Windows experience.

Full data includes all Basic and Enhanced data, and also turns on advanced diagnostic features that collect additional data from your device, such as system files or memory snapshots, which may unintentionally include parts of a document you were working on when a problem occurred. This information helps us further troubleshoot and fix problems. If an error report contains personal data, we won’t use that information to identify, contact, or target advertising to you. This is the recommended option for the best Windows experience and the most effective troubleshooting.

That is some fucked up shit right there. Basic is acceptable as long as it's anonymous, but imho should still be voluntary. Full data is outrageous. "If an error report contains personal data, we won’t use that information to identify, contact, or target advertising to you", bullshit with the new broad and open privacy policy:

We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services.

Still no info for people like me right?

-Upgrade icon disappeared
-Control panel still says reserved, and that they will notify me when download is ready

Tried deleting download files and the cmd thing.Nothing

That was surely already answered but I don't have the time to look though 4,7k replies...

Can I delete windows.old now? I upgraded from Win7, everything is fine but my SSD has only 16Gb left and this windows.old file is 22GB big.

Do you know if the windows 10 refresh option can format drives?

Do you know if it will format the entire drive or if it will just format the current windows partition?

Finally got to the error code

Code:
0x8007002C - 0x4000D
The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Tell me there is a simple fix

I've seen on forums people with similar problem and they fixed it by uninstalling any antivirus software and unplugging any unnecessary unplugging USB devices.

Might be worth a try?

Don't do it that way. Upgrade your existing install (this you can do right from the tool), then once the upgrade is done you can do a reset to wipe everything and get a clean install.

Do you know if the windows 10 refresh option can format drives?

Do you know if it will format the entire drive or if it will just format the current windows partition?

It formats (quick or full), and you get to choose whether to format just the system partition or all.

If you are not going to roll back to Windows 8, which you can only do for a month anyways with those files. You can delete them.

What's the best way to get the full version on the one I was running the preview on? Just act as if it's brand new and put it on a USB?

Anyone has experience with GIGABYTE motherboards? I'm downloading various drivers from their page and they have 2 options for LAN

I got Killer NIC when I installed the drivers from the disc I got with my motherboard on Windows 8.1 but they also have an option for Intel LAN Driver, and I'm not sure which one to get?

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5126#driver

Also, anyone has any idea how to fix the SM Bus Driver issue in device manager?

I shouldn't say refresh, it is reset. But it only looks like it will wipe what partition Windows is installed on.

If you ever need to reinstall 8. The generic Dell OEM discs will take care of it without even worrying about a key. It is embedded on the motherboard.

Tasks such as setting an event. When it asks me the name of the event and I tell her the name, an error message pops up. Same for alarms, reminders, performing a search. The only thing I got to work was conversational stuff like "Hello" etc.

I did notice she had issues when not connected to the internet or there were server issues. Had a storm come thru and so I shut down everything including my network and used my Surface. She is basically useless without the internet it seems.

That tool doesn't work for me, the box just disappears when it's creating Windows 10 media or something. Any ideas how to fix that?

Doesn't work. It just says App expired.

Does it say your trial has expired and to download full version from Windows Store?

Literally every single windows 10 app I try and load up including the settings app that lets me re-install windows are all coming up with this error. And loading the Windows Store doesn't work either.

Well, Win 10 looks pretty decent... but NVIDIA screwed the pooch on their drivers so the two monitors on my GTX 460 won't run and I just have the one off my 770. I guess I'm going to have to revert until they get off their ass, unless I can just revert to some Windows 8 drivers and just have it all work, WDDM 2.0 and DX12 not being super important at the moment to me at the moment.

The word is that if microsoft have identified issues with specific setups, then they will wait with allowing you to install until it is fixed.

Another theory is that they are just trying to limit the amount of people that install so that their servers will survive.

But just download the tool in OP and force the upgrade..

I kinda wish more people jumped into the Insider stuff so they could get use to Win 10. Takes a while to adjust to where things are.

For those new to everything, biggest tip is Use Cortana for finding things like system settings, or other menus etc.

Also, if you are in the settings menu, you can Right Click and pin those settings to the Start Menu for ease of access.

Wooh, my copy has been activated! It failed every time I tried to do it manually, but after a reboot (to install some security update) it happened automatically. Nice. So that confirms that it is indeed no problem to upgrade the way I did (via the media creation tool, and then reset the install before the activation had happened).

Is anyone able to get multiple GPUs working on NVidia? I've tried so many things, but the drivers won't detect my second GPU no matter what.

It seems like every time I do the Windows Update trick, the download size gets bigger. Now it's at almost 8GB. Hopefully that's a good sign.

OK so finally something went right!

Managed to install Windows 10 on my Surface Pro 2. No problems with Bluetooth or WiFi as others have reported, no issues with sound either.

Scaling in general looks like it's working much better. I'm always plugged into a second monitor with a bigger resolution and scaling was always a pain in the ass. Shit was either too small for the Surface screen and simultaneously too big for the monitor or vice versa, and now there seems to be proper scaling for both (or at least something closer resembling to proper scaling). Edge looks and feels amazing. I think Tablet Mode will be something I need to get used to but it should work just fine (other than no swipe to go back. Why the hell was that removed?)

i'll give that a go in a bit, right now i'm going through any optional, but recommended updates i've missed. thanks

You have to do the upgrade first.

Is there any way to change what programs Cortana opens things in? For example when I say "Play Music", can I configure her to open Winamp instead of the default app?

If Winamp was a Windows Store app, allowing it to interact deeply with Cortana, then yes. But since it's not, then no unfortunately.

I see. That makes sense.

BUT HOLY FUCK I CAN FINALLY SHADOWPLAY DESKTOP CAPTURE. This shit was broken forever on Windows 8 and 8.1.
