doesnt the media creation tool (if you're gonna upgrade) do exactly the same thing waiting in line does?

there's no reason to wait guys, if you wanna do it now

I will never trust the built in reset feature of Windows 10 ever again. Did a reset on of my computers and it is stuck in an infinite blue screen loop. :/

It is strictly .iso installations from here on out.

Personalization settings. Right click on desktop or do a cortana search.

Personalization>Colors

Disable Automatically pick a color from background.

Turn on Show Color on start, taskbar and action center.
Select color.

The opacity... i have to check... but i don't think they are in the same place.
Thanks guys.
But i already knew about that, and unfortunately it only lets you pick from preset colours and you can't change the intensity of them.

In Windows 7, there's a few-pixel barrier to the right of your clock, segmented off If you move your mouse over it, you discover it's a button. If you click that button, you find it's "minimize all / show desktop". I can't remember whether or not it existed in Windows 8, because of the hot corners stuff. In Windows 10, there are no hot corners, but the space is still there... but it doesn't do anything. So you can't get your clock flush to the right of the screen. Not saying the problem is having a few pixels padding, the problem is that there's a line segmenting off these few pixels and no corresponding line on the left side of the clock.

That's still a button on mine and it still goes to desktop.

Turn Search/Cortana hidden. Add any kind of other toolbar to the start bar (say the iTunes minimized player or whatever). Unlock the task-bar. Your start bar now has the Windows logo, then a divider, then your first pinned app. There's more space between the divider and the pinned app than between the windows logo and the divider. I think this is because the pinned taskbar icons have more padding than the Windows logo, but I can't tell for sure. If I lock the taskbar (which drops the divider) it doesn't look as pronounced.

That's still a button on mine and it still goes to desktop.

That's good to hear. I'm wondering if I'm still experiencing a bug. Do you visually see the button (i.e. there's a highlight or a depress animation when you click it) or is it just the functionality? If it's the latter, I'm guessing something is broken for me.

Thanks guys.

I guess you can get a 3rd party app that can let you modify this. I like the solid black colors to be honest.

That's what I was wondering. Is it the exact same process as reservation, without the "waiting in line" bit?

So I finished the upgrade, backed up necessary files, and chose the full reset with wipe. This is supposedly the new way to do a wipe.

4 hours later, I'm stuck on the "Resetting this PC 99%"

Everything I read says to let it continue; one guy wrote that he left it on overnight. Bad news is that I didn't get the key so I can't just wipe again and use the ISO. Ugh. Suggestions?

Thanks guys.

It should allow you to change opacity. Though its only a binary switch. Maybe there is something that could help you out within accessibility options?

Has anyone found a way to change the system login background? Specifically the blue light background with the glassy windows logo. I had a custom background for this yesterday, but it was the only background that automatically changed to a default when I switched to 10. I can't remember how I'd changed it before.

Is anyone else having video playback issues in Edge?

Almost every video I've tried to play (YouTube, BBC, Gametrailers) the left half of the video is fine but the right side is full of ghosting, corruption and weird pixel stretching.

Even viewing in Internet Explorer yields the same effects. I didn't have any of these problems with Metro IE on 8.1

I just upgraded and now both my GPU and CPU are running 5-10 degrees hotter. I opened task manager to see if anything was causing but found nothing. It could be Firefox since it runs like absolute unusable shit on W10 for me but even using Edge it's still running hot. It's really troubling going from an already pretty high ~40C because it's so hot outside today to consistently above 50C just idling.

Also I'm probably dumb but I cannot find out how to change my Xbox.com email address. It's currently tied to some dumb email I created over a decade ago and I'd like to keep my Gamertag stuff to my new email that I would like to use with stuff like the W10 store.

So after doing the initial in place upgrade, if you wanted to clean install via bootable ISO media (USB/DVD) and you deleted all partitions - effectively starting from a clean slate - will it request a product key and if so how would I obtain it?

App store -> My Account -> Settings. "Only update apps if I am on Wi-Fi". Pop quiz: If you are on ethernet and not Wi-Fi, and you turn this setting on, will apps update? I would guess yes, because what the option actually is is something more like "Don't use my metered cellular data connection to download stuff", but there's no label or descriptive text and the option appears even if you're on a PC that has no cellular hardware.

General sloppiness
App store -> My Account -> Downloads -> Check for updates. If no updates are found, you don't get any feedback. No prompt, no text. Just the spinning wheel disappears. No animation.

App store -> My Account -> Downloads -> Titled "Downloads and Installs". Is there where your installed apps are? No. That would be App store -> My Account -> My Library. Is this where your library of content (TV, music) is? No. That would be opening the TV or Music apps.

App store -> Games -> Game top charts -> Do you expect that what you get when you clicked on this is "Top Charts"? No, what you get is "Top Free". Why is the label not "Top free games", then? You have a left-hand side menu that has Top Free highlighted, no option for Top Paid (because no one would want to single-click go from Top Free to Top Paid), and "Chart" under Refine. If you remove "Chart" from refine (what am I removing here?), then Top Free and Top Paid are both visible as options... confusingly under "Chart", which is still under "Refine", but this time with no <x> next to it.

Not saying it would've made that much difference, but were you ever running the technical previews? You could have given them this feedback months ago if you were - not that it necessarily excuses some of the issues. Also unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, the button near the clock is still fully functional in Windows 10. < I see this has been mentioned

Upgraded my PC last midnight and the upgrade only took shortly more than an hour. I've been here upgrading my parent's computers and it's been taking more than 2 hours.

So the update finished. So far all my important programs are working, and I'm having no hardware/driver issues.

The OS is slick looking and runs snappy enough. I think I like it, but I still haven't even begun to mess with any of the new features yet.

Also I'm probably dumb but I cannot find out how to change my Xbox.com email address. It's currently tied to some dumb email I created over a decade ago and I'd like to keep my Gamertag stuff to my new email that I would like to use with stuff like the W10 store.

This is a pain in the arse. One method is by using a Xbox 360, which doesn't work for me due to some random error and there maybe some other ways to do it but I am not sure.

Any feedback I can come up with in 10 minutes of fiddling around, I suspect they are aware of. This kind of stuff to me is symptomatic of running out of time. The alternative, that no one ever tried basic UI stuff, seems unlikely.

Do I have to install this once the download finishes or can I just sit on it a while?

I really wish it would let me pause the download. I've got piss poor bandwidth, so this is going to be a 9-10 hour download, and it's killing anything else I try to do. I tried stopping the download, and it just kept going.

Yeah Windows Store does not want to install Minecraft Windows 10 Edition or install this Skype update

Also, anyway to set this up to auto-sign in? I don't want to turn on my PC and play with any lock screens.

Other than it being very fast, I don't think there's actually a way to tell. From lifting the lid of my Ultrabook to being logged in takes about 5 seconds or so if that's any help.

Awesome, thanks :)

Activated windows, just kept clicking it about 4 times until it did it.

Ah I'm ready to clean install after getting activated but this is scaring me

:(

Has anyone else reached the app install device limit on nowhere near 10 devices? i just got an email but only have 3 devices in my list.

edit:

You get an email?

yeah... but i have only my PC and my SP3... and im trying to install netflix?

im so confused.

edit: seriously... i removed all devices and nothing works.

Every time I check for updates it says that Windows 10 Home failed.

Do I have to install all optional updates for Windows 10 to start downloading?

I still have one optional update left which is Skype. I haven't bothered with it since I don't use Skype.

So I installed Windows 10 on my parents laptop from an existing Windows 8 set up. I used a product key checker and it's displaying the exact same serial key as my desktop (separate computer) has which is currently running a Windows 10 installation from the insider preview...

My question is, how is Microsoft handling product keys? I thought that any computer running Windows 7 or 8 that was upgraded would be given a new serial key and it would invalidate the old one... Or does the original Windows 7/8 key now work with Windows 10 installations after you've upgraded it at least once?

What I'm looking for is a way to get my 7 & 8 serial keys into Windows 10 compatible keys. The reason I want them converted is so when I do fresh installs I can start with a Windows 10 iso rather than installing Windows 7 or 8 and then using their "Media Creation Tool" to install Windows 10 over top of it...

I know they are trying to associate installations with the motherboard, but I do wipes and upgrade my computers often so just having a dedicated serial key would be the most preferable option.

edit~

When I installed Windows 10 on my parents laptop I used their "Media Creation Tool". I know you are suppose to be able to use the prompt in the task tray, but the laptop didn't have the option to upgrade today and I wanted to get it over with while I had some free time. I did use the icon to "reserve my free upgrade"... I heard that if you reserve using the icon Microsoft will send you an updated key, but I don't know if that is true... If it is true, what happens if you have multiple computers and want to do several reservations, do they let you do that?

What do you mean "updated key"? Mine is the "core" one (since I updated from 7 Home Premium, I guess) listed here.

It still works for me too.

There is no click/hover animation, but it brings me to the desktop.
