Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Oh yeah, another question. I heard the product key was stored server-side when upgrading, or something, not having an MS account won't give me any problems there, right?

Nope. It uses your motherboard to Lock the license. You are good. I would get a key finder to just grab the key just in case. You just can't upgrade your motherboard as the license is tied to that. Ms support can be helpful in times like that tho.

You won't even need the key if you were to fresh install it.

Hey guys, I got the Windows 10 offer on my Windows 8.1 systray now, but this cheap laptop I just got runs on Celeron and is only used for office applications and sometimes it stutters every now and then, so I was thinking of downgrading it instead to Windows 7. What's a better option? Move to 10 or down to 7? I hate 8.1.

Man, I really wish we could get a fix for "Something happened"

Just no clue what to do

Seems that a clean install is my only choice. Guess I have to do a backup of everything. Dont know if I have enough USBs lol.

My Windows won't work. And now I found out Umaru didn't air? This is ridiculous.

My laptop upgraded to Windows 10 fine. Can I just use that key or will it block out both my PC and laptop?

10 is my vote. People have said it runs better on dated hardware than the old OS.

Okay, that's great. Thank you.

Just finished install from the ISO directly from windows 8.1. Worked flawlessly. It took almost 35min even with a SSD. Also activated instantly.

No you can't use the other key. It is tied to that motherboard.

Downloaded the media creation tool that has been mentioned as a workaround for waiting in line, but it just kind of hangs with the spinning dots...

Is this the same for everyone?

Intel Graphics are supported by Microsoft and Intel and guaranteed to be compatible with Windows 10. There should be a tool on Intel's website that automatically deters your integrated graphics and recommends the appropriate driver.

Try that.

It scanned and found zero drivers. I know for a fact I haven't updated the drivers since getting this laptop 3 years ago too.

I think all new pc's come with win 10 now unless it is some leftover stock in brick and mortar stores.

I visited the Microsoft Store today and all the PCs had a big asterisk next to Windows 10 that said upgrade from windows 8. It's probably just old stock they want to get rid of first.

Most people are not seeing issues. Have you rebooted and then tried the tool again?

I think the download progress can just be a bit slow.

Do you have good upload speed? Grab a subscription to one drive or Google Drive and back it all up to the cloud.

Verify the xbox app is version 7. Then you will hit the connect button on the left side and connect with your xbox. Once connected you hit the stream button right above it. That's it.

Thank you.. my issue was that I had nearly 30 updates to apps and one of them was the xbox.

Cortana is fucking strange. I can launch *some* games by saying the name, but not others even though both games are in the app list and Cortana detects my voice correctly :/

Edit: be patient spinning circle guy. Media Creation tool was nothing but a spinning circle for at least half an hour for me. The actual download starts afterwards.

I'll have to test it but I believe she works based on the name of the exe file name too and not just the app name.

Hmmm... Doesn't seem to recognize my second monitor and the resolution's stuck at 1024x768... Might need to reinstall the NVidia driver (I had just installed the one released today)

Wow. I told the upgrade to delete everything, but GOG is still here along with all the data. Win 10 doesn't see it though. I was wondering why what I thought was a clean install would take up 160GB of my hard drive. I need to figure out what else it didn't delete. Interesting.

Edit: Ahhh, Github. That'll do it. And that Windows.old file :\

I'll hold onto that one though.

I would run ddu to blow away whatever drivers you have and install new ones. I would also use that tool ms released to hide their Nvidia updates.

Are you saying the name of the game exactly as it's written? It's weird because although Cortana is very good at processing natural language for most things, when it comes to launching applications, you need to be very specific. "Open Grand Theft Auto V" instead of "Open GTA V" for example.

Found my first "problem", my PC won't go into sleep mode, it just wakes up immediately. I'm 99% sure it's a bios problem, but it's too late to investigate, I'll see if I can fix it tomorrow.

So if anyone is getting the "Something happened " error. The solution is to change language setting to English(US) I had mine on English(Canada)

So far I don't mind everything and will take some tweaking but I actually prefer Windows 8.1 so far as it feels more professional and easier to use despite a few bugs. Now my question is, how do I go back to my windows 7 installation? Control panel doesn't work at all, so I have no idea.

Yeah a few people are having that issue. The one I think that has been trying to fix it all day is the guy with the sheep avatar :).

You need to go to the notifications area down on the task bar. Go to all settings, update and security, recovery and then you can roll back.

People dont realize it but MS has some great designers working for them and it shows in how "alive" WP10 feels.

I'm sorry but I had to laugh, the last thing MS has is a great design team, it's a fucking mess. It's truly a bunch of ideas thrown together without much care for consistency. Incorrect padding, ui menu overlappings, weird use of colors, icons in many different styles, etc..

This may be a very specific question, but in Windows 8 I could pin individual sections of the sports app to the Start Menu (for example, just MLB news or Giants news). I can't figure out how to do this anymore. Can anyone help?

Also, is there a way to add transparency options back to windows again? Where the top of a window is the same color as your desktop?

Hmm. Seems like my system turns the monitors off, then the power saver kicks in after 10 minutes and then my monitors are in a true sleep state. Can't figure out what the setting is.

3 finger tap on touch pad seems to activate Cortana

wonder if there's a way to make it act like the windows key (search) instead

Cortana aint really useful since typing stuff there directs me towards Edge results and im still using Chrome

Anyone else with custom-built PC's getting something like this:

Do I need to clear my Software Distribution folder and force the update, or should I wait?

The check it does seems to think I'm ready... so I dunno what the holdup is.

DO NOT go and wipe your download folder. While that may work for some people, it doesn't work for everyone, as the upgrade process is complex with a ton of different phases and multiple reasons why it may or may not work.

You'll likely end up causing more problems than you solve.

This is an expected message indicating that when installation begins it may require user interaction. This is the largest software upgrade event ever and we’re managing it so everyone has a great experience. We recommend waiting until your PC receives a notification to upgrade, and then following the instructions provided.

Please note that there is no problem with your reservation or upgrade download. The upgrade download is not corrupt as some have stated, and you will be notified in the coming days or weeks when your device is ready to upgrade.

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

By doing this, not only are you avoiding re-downloading the entire thing with the Media Creation Tool, but you are also avoiding a lot of potential headaches.

The error code does not mean that there was a problem with the download. It simply means that you weren't eligible to install it yet.

Sounds like quite the ride... gonna hold off until you all figure out all the bullshit for me.

Not that I blame him, :lol

Thinks are actually going really well! Just been super busy is all :-)

I posted this on gaming side, but got no response.

Is anyone else's PC still downloading the win10 update files after installing win10? Mine is and I don't know how to stop it.

Download and install went well enough I suppose.

Seems like all of my apps and browsers open at a lower resolution though. It is very strange.

Should be 1080P but the browser size is gigantic.

I learned that today when trying, and ultimately failing, to upgrade my father's computer.
Thank god I was able to system restore to a few days back.

Cortana says it's not available in my region.....I'm in Canada

What

Yeah, it friggin sucks that she didn't launch here... I mean, we border the US.

I didn't mess with Software Distribution.

I just downloaded the media creator tool and went through the update procedure.

Everything's up and running now, seems okayish.

No good, it's still not working for me. Unless I didn't change my language correctly.

Did you change it from control panel?
Ctrl panel>Clock, Language, Region>Region and Language>Administrative>Change System Locale

It will then ask you to restart your computer, once changed.

If not try logging in as Administrator and not User

Awesome. That is great to know. Thanks!

I do think making registry changes can be scary for some people tho. I have some more workstations to update tomorrow. I'll give it a shot on one of those.

Funny enough after all the problems people had with the Dualshock 4 and some with the Xbox One pad it's the WiiU Pro Controller that works flawlessly for me.

Oh God, I didn't have my graphics driver installer for a few minutes and it was some 640x480 hell there for a bit. Nice and snappy now.

Wise. Next week I'll be attempting again, and not messing with Software Distribution.
