Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I get M$ said the upgrades start on the 29th but have they said how long the rollout would be?

I ask because my upgrade icon just tells me "notify me when ready" and I want it to do it on its time so there is less a chance of a mess up Though, I want to know if I missed it or something

Did you look at the OP?

My touchpad isn't as responsive as it was in windows 7 especially in regards to tap-clicks. Feels way worse, basically a downgrade.

I know you can log into Xbox with a different account, I didn't try the store though...I should have, I'd like my minecraft account tied to my Xbox account just in case that matters in the future

Thanks I took the plunge - of course by default it tries to link the two but it does give you an option "Sign into this app only" - phew!

Did you use the Media Creation Tool from MS to make a bootable USB?
Yeah, made it on my laptop for the desktop. I tired doing a reset but it fucked up and threw a blue screen saying something about the boot device. So I just wiped it and did a fresh install.

Or Google.

Everyone better go Linux on desktop and phones.

Exactly. Besides, they're not hiding it and quite frankly it's already established that the big three need data to drive their models of support.

As for Linux.... yeah, desktop linux will never take off and on phones you've got Ubuntu and Android; One has safety and security, one has features everyone wants. It's tough for sure.

Weird, my install completed and gave me a temp/invalid key, which method did you take? I just downloaded the windows 10 tool thing (not the upgrade from the task bar) and it never asked for a key until windows 10 was installed.

Hmmm I was having performance issues in Tembo but I assumed it was the game's fault (hadn't tried it yet on PC). Maybe the drivers will have to update. I didn't notice significant issues in the preview though. Then again, DS4 wasn't broken earlier in the preview either...

I don't know how to hide them, but library stuff won't hide thembecause those aren't libraries, those are your user folders. Speaking of, anyone know how to get File Explorer to open to My Computer? I remember having to use a weirdo trick to do this on Win 8 too.
Windows key + e

Been great so far, awesome and painless upgrade. Why Cortana isn't available in Canada is beyond understanding for me, wtf we aren't some 3rd world nation Microsoft.

Has anyone used the media tool for the upgrade option but chose to keep nothing? W10 just refuses to go on my system so I'm clearly going to have to just do a clean install right off the bat. I can either try this option or find a blank DVD and create the bootable iso. Their upgrade process is a joke.

Is there any way to force the Media Creation Tool to download the English version of Windows 10?

I'm trying to upgrade a Win 8.1 laptop that is set in English language but the MCT keeps on downloading the Greek version of Win 10, thus prompting me to do a fresh install and losing my data in the process.

So i'm sitting in front of my girlfriend's mom's laptop and it's an old Windows 7 machine.

With Windows 8, i think you pretty much could use Windows 7 drivers. That's not the case with Windows 10 anymore, right?

I'm about to put my old SSD into her machine to speed it up a bit. What would you guys recommend?

* Windows 7 (familiarity)
* Windows 8.1 (better OS, better SSD support, some Metro weirdness)
* Windows 10 ('best' OS, less Metro weirdness compared to 8.1

i'm unsure, since going for 10 is the biggest hassle ...

let's not derail this all too much, but i'm not sure how much this has been "established", given Apple's aggressive stance towards "we don't want your data (because we make shitloads of money from you buying our rather expensive hardware, anyways)".
If i wasn't using my Windows Machine exclusively for gaming, if it were my 'personal computer' (as much as my macbook is), some of these privacy issues would definitely rub me the wrong way.
As it stands, they can collect all the keystrokes of me playing Dota or Starcraft all they want.

Windows 10 was quite unstable on my computer even when I chose the "Keep nothing" option, but a clean Reset made my computer work as intended again so yes I do recommend using a bootable ISO over the upgrade.

Now that I've upgraded to Windows 10. Is it okay to delete the $Windows.~WS folder within the C: drive?
It's about 5GB in total.
Try using a disk cleanup and see if you can remove it from there. You don't delete it directly.

Ah, so I'm in the right path. Thanks. Will try it later.

The snap functions don't work half as well as advertised. Not only can I rarely ever get windows to snap where I'd like them, it's harder than ever to actually get my pointer on the edges and corners.

EDIT: In fact, it's never been more frustrating because two windows side by side don't have definable little grab edges that are distinct from one another, so when the little side-to-side arrows show up, I have no idea which window I'm about to move.

What a ridiculous clusterfuck.

I actually upgraded first to link Windows 10 to my email. But the upgrade was messed up in a way. Nothing was recognized so I manually looked and installed the drivers from my other pc. I did create an Iso afterwards and did a clean install after from the media tool.

what exactly is system?

OK, I've updated now. I have a few questions.

1. Can I change the task bar search box text to stop it saying 'search the web and Windows' (I promise you Microsoft, I do understand what that box is for). I'm aware I can turn off the search box or make it an icon.

2. With my 1440p monitor I have 125% scaling on for text and such. Just like in Windows 8. Windows stuff is fine but Steam and Spotify and other such programs have blurry text and don't look too crash hot. Is there anything I can do?

Open the task manager, right click the process that is blurry then select "Properties". Switch to the compatibility tab and check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" then restart the program.

Win+left and Win+right are much faster to use than dragging the windows around to snap them.

Set the control panel DPI to what you want for windows (and all DPI compliant apps), then for specific misbehaving apps, right click the task bar item, right click the app name (just above pin/unpin from start), then go to properties, then Compatibility in the window that pops up, then check "disable DPI scaling". The window will be smaller and have smaller text, but it won't be blurry.

a big thanks for this! it drove me crazy

the only thing bugging me is in the Power options , I only see Sleep, Shutdown, Restart, where is Hibernate??

Well, I've made sure my Windows 8.1 laptop is up to date, I have all the necessary updates, I've restarted and restarted, but that little icon just hasn't appeared on my taskbar for me to even reserve my copy.

What am I doing wrong? :-/

Sleep actually works as hibernate (hybrid sleep, will resume even if you lose power). You need to go into the power settings to enable explicit hibernate.

Try using a disk cleanup and see if you can remove it from there. You don't delete it directly.

Oh, I've already done that. Through disk cleanup I got rid of Windows Installation.old

However within the C: drive there's a hidden folder called $Windows.~WS which is about 5.7 GB. I assume it may be the file that every computer downloaded prior to the upgrade? There's no option to get rid of this folder through disk cleanup.

Windows key + e

Oh wow that even works in windows 7, surprised I never heard of that. so many good shortcuts added in 7 with the windows key.

Did they ever add a shortcut for Snipping Tool? I love that thing, can't believe there's no shortcut in 7 or 8

Use Windows Key + arrow keys. I really, REALLY wish you could disable the dragging but keep the keys. I tried--disabling dragging disables the keys. Idiotic. Keys work perfect, dragging works terribly if you have two+ monitors.

They added hybrid sleep a while ago which basically makes sleep work much more like hibernate. Did you go into Change Plan Settings? I didn't look but Hibernate may be disabled or a sub-feature of sleep now.

Win+left and Win+right are much faster to use than dragging the windows around to snap them.
I shouldn't have to use the keyboard for this shit. That's half the convenience factor right there. One handed, don't have to look down at the keyboard convenience.

How much free space do you need to download Windows 10? My Windows 7 SSD only has like 15 GB free right now.
It's only a 3GB file, and then it seems to use up an extra couple GB's for whatever reason.

Not much, though.

Using the USB media creation tool to create the iso to upgrade from it takes roughly ca. ~ 7GB

For those with eMMC SSD's (like me), make sure you do a reset of your OS (which gets rid of all your data) and then run the USB creation tool upgrade wiping all personal data during the upgrade to get the absolute cleanest Windows install you can get. Post upgrade on my HP Stream HTPC I had about 5.14GB left and I'm installing all apps on my secondary drive.

quoting myself here, but ...
that was Vista drivers on Windows 7, right?! not 7 drivers on 8 ...
i'll just stick with Windows 7, i think ...

Jesus christ, the more I mess with the snap function, the more it's just incredibly shit.

If I snap to the bottom of the screen, the bottom border becomes un-clickable. So if I want to move the window up, I have to grab the top, move it til the bottom becomes visible, move the bottom up, then move the whole window down again, and then fit things to size again.

How does this happen? How is this so incredibly fucked up an inconvenient?

Need some help guys. Upgraded to w10 using the upgrade prompt that comes up but now I keep getting the blue screen of death. The computer boots (takes forever though) I sign in and everything goes well for 5 minutes then "something went wrong" with code internal_power_error. I looked up online that it could be a driver. I think it may be my gpu (amd 275m). What do I do?

I am on Win 10 now but my screen resolution is messed up, where are the settings so I can fix that?

Thanks.

Restart a few times, or wait for the graphics card update to kick in, or download the graphics card driver yourself (it may say it's installed, but don't trust it).

Hmm. I don't it's really okay to delete a hidden folder. I always skip those. I checked and it is only 300KB. I wonder why yours is 5GB.

So yesterday I upgraded and then used reset to get a fresh install. But I still didn't like how reset formatted my harddrive. It still left that stupid 40MB Dell partition, plus a few random sections of unused space between partitions, it looked like a mess to me. Though, It was probably mostly Dell's doing, not Microsofts.

So I formatted my harddrive myself, and tried to do a fresh install right from USB to see what would happen.

*sigh*

Windows 10 wouldn't activate.

I had to then:

  • Format my hard-drive again
  • Reinstall WIndows 8.1 & activate Windows 8.1
  • Upgrade to Windows 10.
  • Reset Windows 10, so it's a fresh install

Since my windows 8.1 was a fresh install I probably didn't need to do that last step, but I did anyways.

Now finally. I'm activated. I have a fresh Windows 10 installation. And my harddrive is partitioned exactly how I want it to be.

Anyone know why I might still have DirectX 11.2 when I've upgraded to Windows 10? I installed the OS on launch night and have all the latest updates but running Dxdiag shows I have DirectX 11.2 and not 12 yet. Anyone know why this could be? I have an AMD Radeon HD 7520G if that helps. Is my graphics card not supported yet or something? I heard Direct X 12 is supposed to support the Radeon HD 7XXX series so don't particularly understand why I'm still running 11.2 instead of 12.

Doesn't help that DirectX can now only update via the Windows Update instead of just downloading the runtime installer as with DirectX 9. Any ideas guys?

I have a AMD Radeon 7660G in my laptop (one of the higher tiers) and DirectX 11.2 is the highest our GPUs will go. Our GPUs are based on AMD's VLIW4 tech (4+ years old now) which maxes out at DX11 (Nvidia's generational equivalent is Fermi for reference).
