Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Has anyone noticed how slow the boot time is for Win10 is compared to Win8.1?

When I was on 8.1 it loaded pretty damn fast. Like under 10 seconds.

Windows 10 however, takes close to a minute to do the same. Maybe more.

What's the deal here?

So yesterday I upgraded and then used reset to get a fresh install. But I still didn't like how reset formatted my harddrive. It still left that stupid 40MB Dell partition, plus a few random sections of unused space between partitions, it looked like a mess to me. Though, It was probably mostly Dell's doing, not Microsofts.

So I formatted my harddrive myself, and tried to do a fresh install right from USB to see what would happen.

*sigh*

Windows 10 wouldn't activate.

I had to then:

  • Format my hard-drive again
  • Reinstall WIndows 8.1
  • Upgrade to Windows 10.
  • Reset Windows 10, so it's a fresh install

Since my windows 8.1 was a fresh install I probably didn't need to do that last step, but I did anyways.

Now finally. I'm activated. I have a fresh Windows 10 installation. And my harddrive is partitioned exactly how I want it to be.

Learnt the hard way yesterday that formatting fucks up your activation. I couldn't finish the windows 10 install because the restarts would result in bluescreens so I went for a clean install from the USB which fucked my activation up. I think your method is the only way of fixing it. Which is incredibly stupid because looking at my Microsoft account I could see the windows 10 licence but couldn't activate that particular install of windows 10.

If anyone thinks Apple isn't doing the exact same thing I would have a sensible chuckle at their face.

Have a good chuckle then. I'm pretty sure Apple doesn't share my WiFi password with my facebook friends, or do most of the other stuff on that picture.

Something is wrong because it should boot as fast if not faster*

*unless it's installing updates.

Minor issue, but does anyone know how to pin the edge tabs...probably bad wording

I have dual screens and usually I will have chrome on one monitor with 2 tabs specific for work and my main screen will usually have Chrome with other tabs.

With Chrome I can easily drag and drop tabs between 2 seperate windows

As soon as I drag a tab out of my Edge browsing window it becomes it's own independant window and I cannot merge it

Wow this feels good, though I have to remove a lot of bullshit like those unnecessary pinned crap.

Is there a way to make Settings in Start Menu go to Control Panel than the simplified crap? And Computer as well in the Start Menu?

If any one have privatefirewall or vpn programs, and facing "no internet connection", then simply uninstall your vpn and privatefirewall, will fix it right away, and you can then simply reinstall the vpn and firewall.

Had this problem myself.

I deleted all of my antivirus and firewall apps before installing 10 and now I'm just using all the Windows security stuff instead.

Bad idea?

Yes, I have noticed.

My computer runs faster in every other respect since I upgraded, but the reboot times are terrible.

i'm still waiting that this will resolve itself.

i COULD go back to 8.1 and wait for the regular-ass update right now, but since all i currently need my PC for is playing through the Legacy of the Void prologue a few times, i'll gladly wait a few days and save myself the hassle.
If i end up having to go back to square (eight-point) one, i won't have to backup anything, really.

going from 8.1 to 10 i used the ISO and maybe i just didn't check / wait to activate the 8.1 install on my fresh SSD.

How did you do the driver update? Mine isn't particularly sluggish, but I wouldn't mind having it up to date.

My HDD is filled up, though. Gotta clean some stuff, not sure what's still taking up so much space.

I just went into Windows update and there was a driver waiting to be installed. Installed it, restarted and everything was fine.

WiFi share while turned on by default prompts before doing anything. I was mainly referring to all of the other data mining listed in that picture.

I have a AMD Radeon 7660G in my laptop (one of the higher tiers) and DirectX 11.2 is the highest our GPUs will go. Our GPUs are based on AMD's VLIW4 tech (4+ years old now) which maxes out at DX11 (Nvidia's generational equivalent is Fermi for reference).

Thanks man! I understand now. All clear. To be honest it was frustrating the hell out of me so at least now I have my answer. Looks like I might need a laptop upgrade.

Neither does MS, unless you very specifically tell them to. And you must be joking with your last statement. You don't think Apple collects and stores data from Siri? Or stores your settings in the cloud in order to sync across devices? A lot of stuff in that image is just fear mongering.

I've not have a problem using Windows' standard anti virus since 8.1.

Then again, I don't use my comp for anything nefarious so that could go a long way in keeping it safe.

Upgrade went super smooth for me and I've got everything working and set up/customized to my liking now. Nice upgrade from Win 7, and far better than Windows 8.

Not that I'm aware of. But you can right click the start button and get a pop up that has links to regular control panel etc.

So after all this bullshit.

I had to take out 1 stick of ram and my AMD GPU for Windows 10 64bit to install.

Now it's installed I've had 2 blue screens for next to no fucking reason.

Was a pain getting AMD CC to install.

I'm buggy as shit....but I love the new UI.

This is what I came to ask about. After the Windows 10 logo screen on startup, it sits on a blank screen for about 30 seconds or more before finally making it to the login screen? Anyone know what it is doing there or how to get around it yet?

Is there any reason why I can't change the install location of my apps?

I just timed my machine. It only took a minute and 30 seconds. I guess the long boot time was temporary.

My only obstacle now is getting my Dualshock 3 to work. Does anyone have a solution for this?

lol went to try the Solitaire app but it says I have no internet

So logged into the Xbox app which oddly shows solitaire as recently played under my Xbox ID. clicked on play from within the Xbox app, which launched the solitaire app...which said I did not have a internet connection

If I do the fresh install, does it free up some space in the hard drive or is that a given with the bloatware? Upgraded from 8.1 to 10.

The image says Wifi password sharing with all your Outlook and Skype contacts is enabled by default, only facebook has to be confirmed. If that's wrong, then nevermind.

Upgraded my desktop. Update was failing so I went the manual route. Moving from W7 Ultimate to 10 Pro. Took a long ass time, but it went through. Restarted so that the Nvidia drivers would kick in.

Not bad so far. Only device I've had issue with is my webcam, which is a MS Lifecam oddly enough. Hope to get more time to play around with 10 later today.

for that one other person on the planet this might be an issue for, I figured it out

drag the tab you want to import to the very left of all the tabs i the new window

In my case it boots at least as fast as before. It's hard to tell because almost all of that time is spent doing BIOS stuff - the actual Windows loading part only takes ~7-8 seconds to get to a usable login screen.

IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS
Just to chime in that not only did this work, but the upgrade was nice enough to tell me which programmes had to be uninstalled. Apparently an incredibly old version of Daemon Tools I didn't even knew was still installed doesn't work on Windows 10, lol.

Is it normal that I haven't gotten my upgrade yet?

Check your Windows Update (Installed Updates) and see if it has failed a bunch of times. Also check your Windows 10 upgrade on the task bar and see if it is telling you wait for a notification as it is being rolled out in waves.

You may just need to kickstart it by opening a command window and using the wuauclt.exe /updatenow command. I had to use this command and the upgrade went seamless.

Uhh what if the Windows 10 icon disappeared from the taskbar tray?

So how do I share my videos folder so my PS4 can read it? Seems to have changed from the network and sharing centre, where it would logically be!

On Pro N if that helps.

Hmm suddenly lost a lot of GB. Are there any files worth deleting after install, like leftover stuff?

If you upgraded it creates a Windows 7 backup. Mine is around 28GB. I also had about 3.5GB of Temporary Install files. If you run a disk cleanup and choose the additional System cleanup options you can delete these if you want. You just won't be able to revert back any longer. I'll delete mine in a few days.

Annoying ass, dumbshit user-friendly issue #214:

With Edge, if you hit the new tab button, you have to click the navigation bar two or three times before you can type in(or copy/paste) a web address.

How did any of these get through like 8 months of beta testing? Where you guys with the preview builds on this stuff? Why is nobody else complaining about these things? I cant be the only one who sees where they are taking steps back *all over the place*.
