Specs? A decent 2011 PC is still pretty viable today.

I'll chime in here.

i7 2600K OCed to 4.2
8GB Ram
Two 1TB HDD 7200RPM
ATI/AMD 6870

First few times I booted, it was slow. I was noticing a lot of HDD usage, which was causing everything else to go slow. I ended up making exceptions for the following programs in defender (all found in system32):

dwm
searchindexer
svchost

I saw the load drop immediately.

Two more reboots and it was very close to 8.1 performance, but a bit slower.

I have also noticed longer boot times.

This is on a upgrade and then used reset function to wipe drive and start clean. It sat on "resetting this PC 99%" for 5.5 hours before resetting and starting the clean install.

The process time from starting the upgrade to having a functional working PC (clean boot) was over 10 hours. Too long, MS.

Works for me,. At least in regards to everything I have tried so far. What issues are you having?

ah sorry, it is quite specific and I forgot - on surface, using google maps in the edge browser, touch won't zoom or pan the map. Works ok in chrome but I'm trying to wean my wife off chrome on surface.

I keep clicking "Pin to Start" but they won't show.

If you upgraded it creates a Windows 7 backup. Mine is around 28GB. I also had about 3.5GB of Temporary Install files. If you run a disk cleanup and choose the additional System cleanup options you can delete these if you want. You just won't be able to revert back any longer. I'll delete mine in a few days.

Ah so disk cleanup will remove them? All right, will hang on the files until a week.

Does anyone have any issues with Comodo Firewall if they use it?

For some reason it doesn't seem to want to work with Window 10. I've got the traditional Window Firewall on in the mean time.

Ended up just buying Win 10 Pro (i need pro for work) and doing a fresh install. The upgrade process was completely fucked and kept crashing my PC. I don't know where my Win 7 license was even from, so I feel like buying a Windows OS is over due for me. It will give me peace of mind when I build a new rig in a year or two.

So yesterday I upgraded and then used reset to get a fresh install. But I still didn't like how reset formatted my harddrive. It still left that stupid 40MB Dell partition, plus a few random sections of unused space between partitions, it looked like a mess to me. Though, It was probably mostly Dell's doing, not Microsofts.

So I formatted my harddrive myself, and tried to do a fresh install right from USB to see what would happen.

*sigh*

Windows 10 wouldn't activate.

I had to then:

  • Format my hard-drive again
  • Reinstall WIndows 8.1 & activate Windows 8.1
  • Upgrade to Windows 10.
  • Reset Windows 10, so it's a fresh install

Since my windows 8.1 was a fresh install I probably didn't need to do that last step, but I did anyways.

Now finally. I'm activated. I have a fresh Windows 10 installation. And my harddrive is partitioned exactly how I want it to be.

Were you activated before you did the format wipe? I've upgraded my desktop and activated, but I want to do a clean install via the ISO tool. Worried I won't be able to reactivate.

I have similar specs and am wondering why the boot time is longer (blank screen after Windows 10 logo). If I open Edge immediately after login and type in a URL or type in the search box even, it is very slow and takes a minute for the text to catch up. You think this is Windows Defender related?

Solution. 16 GB and SD

To those who did a fresh install, did everything run smoothly while doing it? I'm think about just freeing up some space despite the fact my desktop is new.

Yeah, mine was borked too. I just uninstalled it and used the Win10 built-in one instead.

Install failed in step 3 around 4-6%

Pretty much I blinked and missed it. I'll assume this the same issue I had yesterday, and it's now reverting my windows back to 7

I tried the unplugging every USB thing, oh well.

Maybe I should do a fresh install of my Win7? It's an HP OEM, so key is on the side of the case. No issue there right? Just a ton of backing up?

*EDIT* seems i missed a few steps, will try again

Does anyone find that right clicking/left click dragging up (I forget the trademarked name for this menu) on icons in the task bar is very laggy/doesn't work?

Yes, when I initially upgraded to Windows 10 it was activated, even after I did the Windows 10 reset it still stayed activated.

I only lost the activation after I manually wiped my harddrive and tried to do a clean install onto a freshly formatted harddrive.

The only way I could get Windows 10 activated again was to re-install Windows 8.

Setup was equally fast with no errors when I did a "keep nothing" upgrade followed by a clean install of 10. I did save about 100 GB by doing a clean install after the clean upgrade, and the clean install gave me less bugs too.

There is a considerable delay on my end when opening up those taskbar menus, but I wouldn't call it "laggy"

I keep clicking "Pin to Start" but they won't show.
If it makes any difference, I was able to pin Word just fine, among other desktop programs/apps.

Maybe try again after a restart?

Annoying ass, dumbshit user-friendly issue #214:

With Edge, if you hit the new tab button, you have to click the navigation bar two or three times before you can type in(or copy/paste) a web address.

How did any of these get through like 8 months of beta testing? Where you guys with the preview builds on this stuff? Why is nobody else complaining about these things? I cant be the only one who sees where they are taking steps back *all over the place*.

I hit the new tab button, Ctrl + V to paste in the link and then hit enter. No clicking required.

Can anyone help me?

I am asking Cortana to play a song, but it keeps opening a webpage instead of playing the actual music from my pc. Or isn't this a feature?

lol went to try the Solitaire app but it says I have no internet

So logged into the Xbox app which oddly shows solitaire as recently played under my Xbox ID. clicked on play from within the Xbox app, which launched the solitaire app...which said I did not have a internet connection
I get this as well!

I just don't wanna fuck up something I just got yesterday.
50.2 GB/912 GB and 10 is taking 25 GB, should I just say fuck it or go for the fresh install?

Yes. Alternatively you will see a Windows.old folder on the root of your C:\ It is the physical location of your previous Windows Installation and matches the size of the disk cleanup option.

i updated to Windows 10 last night on my iMac and now I can't use the brightness and volume keys on my apple keyboard... Boot Camp Support is still installed and is still in my task manager. are there new drivers or something? i can't uninstall them either apparently.

same thing happened to the FN keys on my Sony VAIO laptop while I was running the technical preview. anyone have any suggestions?

1) The address box doesn't accept input until you click it twice.

2) How is reaching your hands up and typing more convenient than clicking with a mouse using one hand?

Like I said, this is a step back.

Are you going in to All Apps, right-clicking on the app, and selecting Pin to start?

Not just those but from folders like ESO launcher. It has Pin to Start but won't appear.

If it makes any difference, I was able to pin Word just fine, among other desktop programs/apps.

Already did, won't work.

I googled the issue:

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-d...askbar-2.html?

apparently there is a list of words and filenames that you cannot pin

renaming the exe might solve your problem

Wow... for what purpose?

that page it brings you to is the address box. you don't need to click on anything

Hmm suddenly lost a lot of GB. Are there any files worth deleting after install, like leftover stuff?

I did a Disk Cleanup on my OS drive and cleared system files as well as system restore points. This will free up your disk space but it will make it to where you can't roll back to your previous version of windows.

Wow... for what purpose?

I don't agree with it, but it could be because they think people could download malicious files with those names in thinking they're official Windows programs.

If you can run them though, there's no point stopping you from pinning them...

Check your Windows Update (Installed Updates) and see if it has failed a bunch of times. Also check your Windows 10 upgrade on the task bar and see if it is telling you wait for a notification as it is being rolled out in waves.

You may just need to kickstart it by opening a command window and using the wuauclt.exe /updatenow command. I had to use this command and the upgrade went seamless.
Will I lose any of my data if I upgrade?
Because I have no idea how to back up, other than moving my stuff to other hard drives.

I love booting to Windows and be able to use y PC in less than 10 seconds. Makes everyone else's computer I use, especially the ones at work, feel super slow. :D

Here is what Windows 10 looks like to me. I love how dark it is. I wish I could completely remove tiles but whatever it's cool to have the menu back.

How did you add subsections for the tiles? I have two that come set up that I can rename, but can't figure out how to add more.

Because that's not affecting everyone? I certainly don't have to click multiple times in the nav bar to get it to accept input. Sounds like a bug.

Drag a tile down or up for it to create a new section. You'll see a blue bar indicating a new section will be created.

That's good to hear. I'm wondering if I'm still experiencing a bug. Do you visually see the button (i.e. there's a highlight or a depress animation when you click it) or is it just the functionality? If it's the latter, I'm guessing something is broken for me.

Yes, it's got an animation and everything.
