Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Apparently I still have Windows Media Player from Windows 8. It says I can uninstall it but when I try to nothing happens. Is there any way I can get rid of it? I'm assuming the Film & TV app is supposed to replace it.
 
The taskbar icons randomly stopped working... as in I can't click on them or anything. Every time I want to re-open a minimised window I have to open task manager -__-

Took me a little while to figure out. It depends on your mouse drivers. I have an old Microsoft WMO so used the MS Mouse and Keyboard Centre to set a macro for Windows+Tab and assigned it to the middle button.

When I had Mac I set the middle button to Expose so it's nice having that functionality back. It's really practical I find. I don't see the point of the task view icon on the task bar - if you're going to mouse down there you may as well click on the program in the task bar.
 
I take that back. Sync is working fine. But I still have an Outlook email account and a different mail account with the same username. The second one is the account that was created originally through the school and the 365 stuff. That is syncing fine, but the Outlook one isn't.
 
update: windows restarted just now, went black screen then restarted again, copy files seems to be done. Doing the installing drivers bit now.

driver install at 6%, overall 32% done.

I pronounce it "zed". Like "edge" with a z. Sounds weird the other way. We're Canadian we say 'zed' not 'zee', :P
 
Well, that could have been smoother but I've got it installed now. Installed using media creation tool, install just stopped on a black screen with cursor (later learned it might have erroneously being trying to use a non-existent second monitor). Rebooted and it reverted to 8.1

Tried again later and it basically stopped at 6% at the installing drivers stage. Unplugging my phone seemed to get it going again, weirdly. Then once it was up and running I had to fight with my X-fi drivers. All working now though.

Probably the most troublesome Windows upgrade I've done although it seems to be running pretty smoothly now.
 
Should I install this on my Dell Venue Pro 8?

I can't seem to find any information on how it will affect performance on smaller Windows tablets.
 
Ugh, trying to install this was the worst goddamn mistake.

Upgrade, find out that DK2 doesn't work with Windows 10. Ok, my fault, shouldn't have jumped the gun. Rollback to Windows 7.

Now I have no graphics drivers, and can't get them back.

Fuck.

I used to use cortana in the car quite a lot to add reminders for myself. I could see it being useful for that while continuing to keep focus on whatever you're currently doing on the desktop.
 
I'm finding that my battery is draining badly when my computer should be in sleep to the point where it dies. My GPU vent is extremely hot whenever this happens regardless of the power setting I'm on. Anyone else experiencing this issue, or has anyone seen someone mention it?

just download the microsoft tool make a USB stick or DVD and start the upgrade from within windows (and tell it it keep your apps and settings to make sure it activates your copy of win10)

also make sure you select your own windows version and the same language, you can change the language after upgrading

after upgrading you can do a clean install
 
Hello everyone. So I just reinstalled Windows 7 with its original OEM key (to free my Windows 8.1 one), but Windows Update isn't playing ball and just keeps looking for updates. Is there a way to skip directly to the upgrade?

If not, I understand there is an app to get installation media. Can I upgrade from an flash drive and activate correctly?
 
Ok, looks like the issue is minor I guess. The accounts are tied together, but the Mail app is looking for an @Outlook.com email address as the primary account rather than my @knights.ucf.edu. So in that primary slot, there is nothing to sync because I do not use an @outlook.com email address and don't plan to. Well, at least the Knights email seems to work fine within the Mail app.

Do I select Upgrade this pc or create installation media?
 
Hmm. I have the Windows BT folder on my C:\ drive, so, Windows X is clearly downloaded, but my Get Windows 10 prompt still says it's not ready. What gives?
 
Oh, and I've also hit the point of no return by running Disk Cleanup and freeing up over 30GB of space on my C: drive which is an SSD. I must have had Windows 7 on there in addition to Windows 8.

I seem to have about 10-15gb of space missing, but disk cleanup only says I can free up 750mb - so what's the deal with that?

Edit: OK so I have a Windows.old folder that's 15gb in size - why doesn't that show in Disk Cleanup? Can I just delete it?

Edit 2: Never mind - I've figured it out :p

You have to reinstall the lastest wifi driver available in compatibility mode (Windows 8). It should work then.

Once you open Disk Cleanup, there should be an icon to scan System Files as administrator and it will re-scan. That's where the old installation files were for me.
 
Stupid question, I have now installed Windows 10 Pro Upgrade and now Windows says that Windows has been activated. But how do I know it's using my Windows 8.1 CD Key and not something else?
 
I have a feeling that Windows 10 will be a freemium product and solitaire is just a tip of the ice berg

Slowly features will be added which will be 1.99 to 4.99 to use

It's tied to your Microsoft account. So it verifies the Win8 key, then associates it with your account, and by virtue of that, verifies Win10.

At least that's how I understand it on a basic level.

Thanks, I figured it out in the end :) It seems there's 25gb of stuff I can clear out. Awesome! I think I'll hold off for a bit though, I'm not hurting for space. Is there any other advantage?
 
All the bitching in both GAF threads made me think I would have a ton of issues installing this thing.

Installed late last night and everything is working fine and running smooth (did not do clean install)

Not sure what some people were exactly doing to fuck up their install process, but once again, thanks GAF for the pessimism!

It's fine actually. At first it was chunky, but then it installed tmthe video driver update and it was super smooth.

Probably not other than just the space. But my SSD went from 20GB of free space to over 50, so that was nice to see.

And by being a SSD there are probably no performance gains by freeing up the space like you can sometimes see in a conventional HDD when it starts to get that full.

Edit: Mr Swine, I actually don't know as I haven't setup a local account in a long time. I'd hate to steer you in the wrong direction, so hopefully someone more knowledgeable can help out.

Actually, it is tied to the hardware (at least according to ArsTechnica). But if someone that has it already installed can clear that it would be great.
 
Anyone else gets an error where you only see the changes you make to the start manu tiles after you restart Windows? If I pin or unpin an app to the start menu, it'll only show after restarting. I can rearrage them without problems, though.
 
God the UI feels really weird after Windows 8.1.

BTW: Is there any way to transfer all programs and settings?

I chose the option that said I could keep my saved files and used Windows Media Creation Tool and for some reason expected things like Chrome, VLC, Malwarebytes etc to follow.

Can I just transfer the old programs from the C:Windows.old to C:Windows perhaps?

I know previously, it was tied to the hardware. I remember major hardware changes sometimes triggering a need for reactivation. But I thought with this process, it is now tied to the account given no sort of product key was needed.

And once you upgrade to Win10, you can then easily do a clean install with little issue if you want to start from a blank slate.

I got this error twice in a row:

PC suddenly stopped and went to blue screen with a sad face. It automatically restarted.
