Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Anybody know how long the indexing should take? I'm still getting the 'We're getting search ready...' message. I've seen a few people on another forum report about it being a bug, but I'm not too sure.

that's not quite accurate, as there are many settings that aren't visible or have limited options in "Settings" compared to the control panel, or vice versa.

there's still buttons / clickable text that will have Settings switch you over to Control panel.

They're not functionally identical. They have weird overlaps / redundancies.

If you're on a PC, right click the start button, then select control panel. The power user start menu is in the same place it was for Windows 8.1.

Anyone had any trouble with folder permissions and if so, how do you fix it. Kinda driving me nuts. I did upgrade, but now I cant delete or write anything to the pictures, music, etc. folders.

I can access the files just fine, but any form of editing files that were there before the Windows 10 upgrade? Nope. If I try to delete anything in the music/documents/pictures folder, says its an invalid MS dos function.

The update popped, just waiting on a couple torrents to finish before I start.

A question for Surface Pro 3 users though, how have you found battery life to be so far? Heard a lot of reports of a decrease, which would mean rolling back to 8.1 if true. How's it been for you?

Thanks for improving/correcting my post.

Oh, look at that. Thanks, wasn't aware of that, used to do Win key + X but didn't realize that you could also right click the start menu.

i think you quoted the wrong person here ;)

I think you're right, lol.

No problem, this feature was why I never felt the need to use classic shell on 8.1. Right clicking gave me what I needed out of a start menu. I used the start screen for games. I had all of my Steam, Origin, and GOG games in one place, newly installed games went there automatically.

My experience so far.

Upgrade to Windows 10.

Blue screen on start up kills Windows 8.1 and C drive.

Discover I need to remove ram and gpu for Windows 10 64bit install.

Clean install 10

can't activate 10 because I don't have windows 8.

Use piratebay to get Windows 8 pro retail copy again and make USB iso.

Now I'm about to.

Use Windows 10 to install Windows 8 so I can upgrade to Windows 10.

Fuck me....Microsoft are so fucking dumb.

This is next level retardation.

Just make the fucking 7-8-8.1 keys work in 10 ffs.

I have to uninstall 10. Install 8 to install 10 legit again.

And heres the kicker... if this fucks out again, my only option after pissing away money on a legit CD will be to pirate windows 10.

Fucking ridiculous.

I'm about to dl the update from the link provided way way back in this thread and it says I might require my product key. Is that just my Windows 8 key?

No, that is if you would do a clean install, you need to do the upgrade.

EDIT: Can somebody tell me how long it takes to rollback to Windows 8.1? I assume it probably takes the entirety of installing again, so an hour or so since I have no SSD. I need to go back since a license I need to work with doesn't seem to work with Windows 10.

Does anyone know if you can upgrade W10 Home to Pro through "Change Product Key" if you enter a Pro key, or does it need a full re-install of Win10?

Fuck...

I don't know if this was my error or what, but I was in the process of backing up the images on my SD card, and when I went to clear the images from my SD card, I guess Windows decided to just wipe the whole SD card except for some unneeded folder.

This sucks because I'm just now realizing that I had two NEF Raw files left from a photo shoot that I did, and I don't have the originals anymore.

So I have a rather strange issue. Windows 10 has for some reason switched the @ and " around.

On 8.1 shift+2 would output "

However now shift+2 gives me @

Anyway to switch this?

Okay so, the laptop was updating itself to windows 10, and I went to a different room for few minutes, when the laptop suddenly turned itself off. Do I just put it back on or what..?

This is what happends of you go to another room than the computer for a minute.

//Restarted, computer started to return itself to an earlier version of windows. So nope, was not suppoused to happend...

You are probably not using the correct keyboard region? Maybe ENG/UK instead of ENG/US.

You have your keyboard layout switched with the EN-US keyboard. You can change that in the settings. Search for "region" and you should find the setting to remove the EN-US layout.

shift+2 outputs " on a german keyboard
shift+2 outputs @ on an english keyboard

change your language settings accordingly. (you clearly WANT a german keyboard, that is)

maybe you have both (english and german) installed, and accidentally hit alt+shift which made it switch between the two.

Upgrade from Win 7 64bit to Win 10 64bit on my laptop went smooth as butter for me. So far I really like it. Is a clean install recommended? Any benefits for doing so?

shift+2 outputs " on UK English keyboards as well. It's just different for US English.

clean install is NEVER a bad idea, really.

make sure your Windows 10 is activated, then make sure you extract your windows 10 license key, before doing the clean install.
Also, if you wanna do that, maybe wait a week or two. Activation / update servers should be back to normal load by then and some apps and drivers will have received proper updates.

oh, interesting, TIL. Thanks!

Cheers for the help people, switching back to the UK layout fixed everything!

My fault really, I was fucking around with my location and language settings to get Cortana to sound like Jen Taylor.

Still no W10 on my notebook. Still showing the reservation notification.
Any tips ? Is there a way to force installation ? I'm in Brazil btw, if it matters.

ooh this looks nice. Would be interested to know the answer too. I have tons of shortcuts on my desktop which I should clean up, but having them sorted like this would help a lot.

I've ran Fences for years without a problem. Stardock does good work.

Why is my installation stuck here forever? It's been here for about an hour now.

It's working on it until something happens.

Seriously though, I got that hang first time. I just uninstalled Start8, rebooted and didn't touch the PC other than running the installer, then picked not to download the Windows 10 updates before installation. Not sure which part did it, but it worked.

Ahh you edited it!

Yeah, i missed his post a few above the pic, i was confused until i traced the post back a bit - lol.

It seemed better to edit my post and have it relate to the pic post instead of looking a dam fool (i still look like a dam fool right? :D).

I'm so sorry to read people having all these problems. The update was as flawless as it could be in my case. Just took a long while to download, but afterwards it was all smooth sailing.

Everything is working fine.

Can you extract windows 10 keys? Isn't that trough some 3:rd party tools?

Windows is still not supporting that feature. You can't have seperate wallpapers on virtual desktops either, even though it'd be really useful.

You can use Display Fusion if you want to have seperate wallpapers on each monitor, though. I don't know if it supports W10 yet, though.

I have separate wallpapers on both monitors.

yeah, but won't you need it if you decided to do an all fresh install from an ISO -> bootable USB drive?

the installer will ask for a key, right?

I thought that too, but you click skip, it activates anyway if you've already performed the upgrade.

At first s hating but man this seems like a big upgrade for me at least. Everything is clean and simple as soon as I loaded the mail app everything synced my school and personal mails, calendars synced etc.. automatically. Love the new apps, my laptop hasn't felt this smooth since like 2013. Love Edge browser, it's extremely quick and don't have to deal with spyware that would raid my extensions in google chrome.

Free as well, love it makes everything easier. 8.1 was also much better than 7 but I only had 7 on my laptop and 8.1 on my main computer
