I have Windows.old, $Windows.~WS, $Windows.~BT, and Recovery.

Which can I delete if I still want the ability to reset to a clean install of Windows 10, but don't need to go back to Windows 8?

I don't think you need any of that, assuming you put the ISO on a disk or USB when the time comes to reformat.

My computer was a clean build of Windows 8.1 that I immediately upgraded to Windows 10. I have that windows.old folder, but there's nothing in there that I need. What can I do with it? Would I get any improvements from doing a clean reinstall of Windows 10?

Maybe this is common knowledge, but I've been having issues opening the Store app and basically any windows 10 app. I was able to fix it by going to the Control Panel > Troubleshooting > Fix problems with Windows Update. It said there were errors and it repaired them and now I can open the store.

So,

I've got a problem where I've purchased Hydro Thunder Hurricane, but when I start it, it's still asking me to purchase the full game.

Has anybody run into something similar?

Open Cortana and type Disk Cleanup then system files. That will clean out all the stuff you don't need.

Disk cleanup won't get rid of $Windows.~WS. A Windows rep recommended on Twitter that we don't delete it "just yet". I deleted it days ago without issue.

Having a very specific issue. Note that I'm not complaining because the workaround is simple; I'm just curious about this and wonder if anyone knows the reason for this behavior:

When I have a folder with a lot of files in it that aren't sorted into folders, if I sort by "Date" (specifically "Date", not "Date Created" or "Date Modified), then when I try to access that folder it takes at least 5 seconds to load the folder contents; I get the "Working on it..." message until it loads. This longer load time persists no matter what view the folder is in (Details, List, Large Icons, etc).

I first noticed this in a folder with 80 files. To test it further, I added/subtracted files. The more files in the folder, the longer the load time. That might seem like "Well, duh, that's obvious," but then...

If I sort by "Date Created", which for all intents and purposes is the exact same as "Date" (the file order literally does not change at all), the folders load instantly regardless of how many files are in them.

Anyone know why this is the case? Again, not really an issue since now I just sort by "Date Created" instead of "Date", but yeah, curious as hell.

EDIT: Found the answer myself. Generally "Date" and "Date Created" are the same, except in cases where the files have EXIF Data. If you sort by "Date", Windows tries to extract the EXIF Data which is why it takes longer.

This apparently isn't new to Windows 10, but I never noticed it while running Windows 7/8/8.1 which is why I thought it was new behavior.

When trying to upgrade to Windows 10, it's saying Ultramon has to be uninstalled. I was told by someone that it works just fine with Windows 10...

I'm not sure why you'd want to use it any more, but it seems to work fine. I just installed it and used it without issue.

They probably force you to uninstall it because it could interfere with the install process. Just reinstall it once you have Windows 10 running.

you just saved my life. i rip all my dvds and blu-rays have have a folder with 300+ films, and the directory takes forever to load. it's apparently because my columns include length and date. removed length and date, added date created, now it's smooooooooth

I've found that an old problem has returned on Windows 10.

When you are using an hdmi display you will lose audio from that display if you turn it off while the pc is still on.

To get audio back you have to go into the device manager and disable AMD HD audio and then enable it again. Or simply restart your pc.

I experienced this bug on Windows 7 but it was eventually fixed in a driver update after many months.

My GPU is an HD 7970 ghz. This might not affect newer cards.

This was happening to me in an early preview build, and it turned out that there was a blank screensaver set to turn on after five minutes. Took me forever to figure out why my power settings weren't working!

I set screen saver to NONE, but the display still turns off after a while (I'm using a HP Envy laptop but connected to an Asus monitor):

Just started using Edge. Is there a way to move the web address bar and the other icons up on the tab section like on explorer?

Sweet. Glad my curiosity helped someone out.

So, I installed it. Only one of my monitors was recognized (they're both the same GSYNC monitors), and the resolution setting was stuck at the lowest. I opened that GeForce Experience app to install the latest windows 10 driver. Now, after the windows logo (on boot), the screen goes black. Multiple restarts and my screens say no signal after the original bios boot screen.

Edit: plugged in a tv into the spare hdmi port on my PC and restarted 2 more times. Now the two monitors work again and are native resolution (tv does not get any signal from computer). This is a bit odd so far.

Friend at work said he installed 10 over 8.1, but rolled back because Chrome doesnt work.

Is that true? Sounded really unlikely to me

He did say the rollback was totally smooth

Interesting predicament here, I reserved my copy of Windows 10 and have been waiting for a notification that I can start moving forward with it. Anyway, couple days ago I got an update for Windows 7 that crashed my PC with a restart. I decided to investigate under the Windows Update program and essentially have a long list of:

Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro Failed

for each day of this week. Any idea why this might be? Am I going to have to use that tool to force the upgrade or what?

Tried this yet? Seems to have helped 1000+ others.

I had no problems with Chrome at all when I had Windows 10 RTM

On that note, does anyone know if Restore Points work cross-OS? What I mean is, if something goes bad with my Windows 10 and I cannot even pass the boot screen, can I use the troubleshooter to use a restore point made in Windows 8.1?
(Side note, what I said above actually happened to me yesterday. The login screen was black, and not even a full reset of Windows 10 could make reinstallation move forward)

Edit: No dice, but I made sure to make a restore point the moment I upgraded.

I'm trying to upgrade a friend's PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but I can't seem to force, or get it to upgrade on it's own. In order for the Windows 7 key to properly translate to a Windows 10 key, through upgrading, would it be possible to force it by using the Windows 10 ISO and "upgrading" it that way? (the focus being on the Windows 7 Key actually translating to a Windows 10 Key through the upgrade)

Since I didn't say it enough times in that question, upgrade.

One funny problem I am having, beyond the occasional blue screen while logging in after a boot, is the default browser selection resets every time I restart.

I think others have had this issue, but the icon spacing on the desktop is wonky, right? At startup, my bottom row is offset differently, then it moves the icons one row up. Now, I come back and there's line of empty icons down the middle. And nothing used to go there, so how did that space get made? It's acting strange, that's for sure.

Spec wise. Looks like a MediaTek MT7612U wifi card.

Check here for a driver: http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads1/downloads/

Use cleanmgr (command).

thank you. just wanted to update that I figured out that problem. apparently after upgrading, Windows 10 replaced my PCIE 3.0 card's driver with their own. It was shit and caused all the Wifi malfunctions. I reinstalled the latest driver from the manufacturer and haven't had any problems for the last several hours. Where with the other driver it would die within 1 minute.

So if you have a USB 3.0 wifi adapter and are suffering from constant disconnects, get drivers from the manufacturer's website and your problems will probably be solved. cheers.

Apart from the indexing issue I'm having, I have two other issues

1) A good portion of my 'startup' programs don't actually start upon boot. Some are; Dropbox, Skype and Realtek HD Audio Manager

2) I'm having weird occasional audio bugs. I've reinstalled my Realtek drivers, but it doesn't seem to help. Booting a game will cause a loud brief static sound. Some system sounds are cut short occasionally, and it's incredibly noticeable when I play Grand Theft Auto III, because all the sound effects cut out prematurely.

Anyone got a solution for either of those?

Upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday.
And I'm very happy with it.
I haven't checked yet if I got the "huge performance boost" for any games I have, but at least every single program I had installed in Win7 still works flawlessly in Win10. Very glad it worked.

Had to upgrade my graphics drivers on my own though, because with the drivers that come with Win10 I only got a 1024x768 resolution, which is unacceptable with my 16:10 monitor.
Worked flawlessly after that.

Will test some games and other programs to see if that performance boost is real or just a placebo or something.

W10 is trolling me sometimes, like it says there are new notifications but when you check it it's actually empty.

I use an Nvidia GTX460 as a dedicated PhysX GPU. However, with Win10, I cannot set it as so. Control Panel and Geforce Experience don't recognize the second card. Device Manager sees it, but it's got an error code 43 on the 460. My main card, GTX770, is fine. Worked perfectly fine on Win8.1 and earlier.

I've tried disabling and reenabling, removing the card physically and connecting it back in. Nothing.

I'm installing Windows 10 right now, after doing the upgrade, it said it needed to restart.. It has been on shutting down for about 20 minutes now. How long is this supposed to take?

edit. I just force restarted it, it's now installing. something must have hung my shutdown.

Edge sucks.

It constantly hangs on every PC no matter the specs when ad trackers and other website notifications appear.

Behavior is consistent which is baffling. You would think that's because a setup is old, but no, it stutters and freezes on every setup I've tried.

Chrome and Firefox don't have these problems as vanilla browsers for fair comparisons.

I wonder if the problem is due to the do not track requests.

I have my friend's laptop and tried to upgrade.
I have the black screen on startup, no cursor, can boot in safe mode, but not much else.
Intel graphics 4000, so I guess the driver's aren't out yet?

Will revert it to win 7 if no fix.

Or will a clean install fix this?
I have enough backup to do so.
