Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

My photos app closes as soon as it opens if I click on a picture from a folder/desktop.

I can open the app by itself fine, and then click on a picture from a folder/desktop and it works once and then it starts closing again.

I made a 5 second video of it.

Any help/options?

I have this issue as well. The temp fix is to remove all of the currently mapped directories from your Pictures Library. Open a File Explorer window, expand Libraries on the left (Show Libraries first if needed), right click your Pictures Library and remove all of the mapped directories. You may need to do this in your Pictures Quick Access as well. I've remapped one single pictures folder to my library and the Photo App is staying up, but that doesn't really help as I have thousands of more pictures. It seems when I add one more folder to the library it will crash again. Not sure what the long term solution is. May be another AMD driver issue.

probapbly asked 100 times already but is this normal that when i want to make a W10 boot usb stick with the mediacreationtool (64bit) , the status stays 0 % for a looooooong time. Tried two different usb sticks already. Even after 20mins, it's still at 0 %. Download should also not take long. I have 50mbit down.

so since today I'm getting blue screens every time I start up the PC. fucking great. It then does some error collecting or something and then it's just stuck. black screen. I have to press the power button and restart the PC. only then the boot up is painfully slow.

early adoption: never again

I've learnt my fucking lesson.

I don't think the SR1 was actually flagged as a security update.

And even if it were, forcing a reboot as the default option does not look like a good idea at all.

It does say non-security updates in the pack. No idea, maybe SR1 fixes the functionality? or maybe it's just utterly pointless and you'll get security and SR updates...

through the how to troubleshoot if your windows 10 install fails and I* cant find the error code that I get. I get error C1900101 - 30017. There are 2 different errors that are one number off from that on the troubleshooting page so now I don't know what to do.

No, because he said clicking "Shut down", not pressing the power button, makes his PC hibernate. Having "fast startup" enabled means that shutting down actually hibernates (so it can then startup faster), which is why I suggested that's probably the reason. To be able to fully shut the PC down and have it cold boot when you turn it on again you need to disable "fast startup".

Fast startup is different from the full hibernate as only a few things get saved and not the whole memory. Turning that off shouldn't be necessary, first go into the power options and try changing 'Hibernate after' and 'Hybrid Sleep' to never. I'm rolling back to 8.1 until there are more fixes for the telemetry bullshit. This is infuriating.

I've got what might be a stupid question, but what is all the fuss about this telemetry stuff in Win10? From everything I've read it doesn't seem to bad honestly, am I just ignorant and naive or is this a mole hill turned into a mountain?

Having lots of issues with sleep mode (and some with shutdown).

Basically I can't wake my computer up from sleep outside of a hard reset. I've run an energy report (powercfg /energy) and only get 1 error which is unrelated. I've also updated all device drivers which seemed to help at first, but eventually brings me back to step 1.

Power options troubleshooting was useless as well.

Anyone know if Microsoft is aware of this? I see plenty of complaints about it on their support forums but they give the same useless advice regarding the power troubleshooting utility

Edit: Just read a few posts above regarding the cumulative update. Didn't know there was one available. I'll see if that helps fix the issue and will report back.

Quoting myself to say that the cumulative update had no effect on sleep.

Okay, so I may have jumped the gun. You have to do a ton of stuff to get VPNs up and running on Win 10, but it is doable. I posted in frustration. But, there is an awful lot of stuff you have to turn off in order to have VPNs working. There are so many things baked into the OS that basically use your location to do different things.

The most egregious "hell fucking no" moment was when I went to run a search and got ads targeted at me in the language of the country I am in, and not the language my OS is set to. I almost pulled a Swanson and chucked my PC into the dumpster.

The problem with mine is it's sitting at the black screen way longer than just a few minutes. I can try recovering to 7 and disabling the thing mentioned. But I don't know why it keeps sitting there, even after I updated to the latest drivers.

If you hard power off when you hit the black screen a few times, you should get to safe mode eventually. If not:

Anyone know how to have windows 10 automatically log you in to your main account without sitting at the password screen?

Settings > Accounts > Sign-In Options

No, old keys won't work. The activation should just happen automatically. Took some time for me though. Manually activating never worked (said the key wasn't valid), then a few reboots later it had just activated automatically.

ahh cool thanks... I'll wait a couple days before i downgrade then

I have it set to never require a sign in but on boot up I still see the password screen. I have a local account but I also have two microsoft accounts on my system. But the local should be the default.

Hm, not sure then. I've just got a single MS account on my PC and it boots straight to desktop.

Is the System process (ntoskrnl.exe) supposed to use this much memory, or is it a leak?

Upgraded on my HTPC without any issues, but now the PC crashes randomly while watching Twitch.tv and youtube videos on chrome.

I get dpc_watchdog_violation error.

I still get crashes on Edge, but it doesn't happen as often if I use HTML by turning off flash.

ok let's try again.. THIRD clean reinstall and every time I make some changes to Homegroup or permissions (it seems that's the trigger) my start menu and all modern apps just Fail to load and get blue spinning circle.

I can not imagine what permission setting is being affected to cause this all I did was literally do clean install, set up a homegroup and shared some folders, transferred some files form another computer and made some house cleaning changes to folder names including onedrive and all of a sudden on next reboot.. no start or modern apps or cortana or ap notifications.. etc again... everything else is fine

I installed no other programs except for some apps

Anyone with any ideas or same problem?

thx for help in advance

EDIT: when logging in with another local user account it all works on that account

E2: found this is a known problem but any workarounds would be much appreciated... although I do not get the critical message just spinning blue circle

My mother just bought a Windows tablet and I'm trying to point the photos app to a different source. Looking on Google shows that there should be an add source button in settings, but there isn't. It just shows the default C: Users Photos or whatever folder.

Any ideas?

Hopefully it did fix it, will let you know when another update that requires a restart happens.
In any case, having an auto-scheduled forced reboot as the default option is a terrible idea on Pro editions, it should be a checkbox for "Install on my next restart" and the "Defer" option.

Is the System process (ntoskrnl.exe) supposed to use this much memory, or is it a leak?

If it makes you feel any better, it seems to be taking almost 2GB on my machine :/ (though I do have a bunch of stuff open, including 3 different IDEs)

Windows Update doesn't seem to be working for me anymore. I try to open it and it just loads endlessly. It's been like this for a couple days now. Any fixes for that?

Can't open file explorer... it just crashes?

Just in case anyone else was having a similar or the same issue - I discovered elsewhere that Autodesk Inventor 2014 was the culprit. You can either upgrade it or uninstall it and it'll start working again. I'm sure there are similar culprits out there.

Decided to upgrade this morning. Everything went fine but I've been stuck on the "Just a few more tweaks" screen for about an hour. Suggestions?

So... I installed windows 10 on my ssd. Are there any settings i should know about that might risk the harddrives longlivety?

I can't figure out what to do about this issue. It's minor, but its been going on for months now. My user name will not display on the login screen or on top of the Start menu. My account has my first and last name, but it only shows my MS account email instead. MS hasn't been any help. Is there anything I have to change in a file somewhere?

Well, the Unity 4.6 sleep issue that I had is still happening, so I take it back, the SR1 didn't fix any of the issues I had :(

So after upgrading digitally to windows 10, I'm having an issue that I can't find a solution for.

Everything worked fine for the first few days, but when I turned on my pc last night, it goes to the screen where it shows a picture, the time and date, but now my mouse and keyboard are not working, and I can't get to the next screen where you enter your pin to go to the desktop screen.

I've googled this all morning on my iPad, which I am using now, and even bought a generic mouse and keyboard just in case it was driver issues. I can get to the bios screen just fine where the mouse and keyboard work fine, but as soon as I reboot goes to the same screen. Ideas?

When I shut down, the computer restarts after a couple of seconds... Anyone know what's up?

/edit
apparantly
Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service cannot start

So my Spro2 has been getting terrible battery life since the upgrade. Like if I don't leave it on charge, it depletes ~50-60% of the charge over a single day without even opening it. When I open the keyboard sometimes it comes on almost instantly which makes me think that it's not "really" going to sleep even though the settings say it will after a couple of minutes.
Have you gone into your power save settings and looked around? When I upgraded, I noticed Windows 10 overwrote my sleep settings from 8.1, and there is a new option to keep WiFi turned on when the device is asleep. Leaving that on drains the battery much more quickly.

I also found out that Clover does not work well with Win 10. It kept trying to auto-resize windows, which would also affect the desktop for whatever reason. Uninstalling that solved the issue.

Action Center -> Right click an Xbox notification next time you see it -> "Turn off notifications for this app"

No I mean like, the actual audio for the app. I want to stream and play my Xbox One but I want to mute the audio but I can't do that within the volume mixer.

Are you video card drivers up to date? That happened to me while watching YouTube videos back in 8.1, my system lagged and it gave me that error. Updating my drivers fixed that.

Have the 5.1 issues been resolved?

On the MS forums, 15+ people reported that changing the sound settings to 24 bits 96000Hz in the Realtek Sound manager fixes 5.1 issues.

Can't get my screen saver to work nor can i get it to turn off the monitor. Any fix?

Did you try going into Power Options, going to "change your plan settings" and seeing if changing the "Turn off this display" option helps?

If you check your update history, you may find lots of Failed attempts to install updates. If that's the case, this might benefit you. If that still doesn't help, you could try upgrading using the Media Tool.

This is going to sound strange, but try muting your TV.
When the volume is not being streamed through my TV, it will not stream through the Xbox/windows 10 either. I'm not sure if that's just a glitch, or how it's intended to work, but it works for me after multiple tests.
I found this out by streaming to windows 10 while my TV was turned off. No sound came through the computer (and I also had a notification in the stream that my kinect had turned off every time I powered off my TV, which was strange). When I turn my TV back on, my kinect came back and the sound returns to the stream.

Don't have an Xbox One to test this one, but this is all the help I could find .
