Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I can;t open any pinned folders, right clicking on my pinned file explorer and chosing any number of pinned folders results in nothing happening, only ones that work are This PC and Quick Access

Downloaded Windows 10 and it fucked up a lot of stuff. Colors were very faded, touchpad wasn't working, etc. Downloaded the drivers and it told me to uninstall the other drivers which i did and it still didn't download the new ones. This is beyond a nightmare so i rolled back immediately.

Not even gonna bother upgrading again till everything is worked out perfectly, not tryna spend my whole day fixing this shit. I'm more than content with 8.1, even if the Xbone features and streaming sounded cool.

Edit: didn't even know that this is still an early adopted program which makes sense considering how messy it all feels. Will give it another try when its available commerically and good to go from the start without this driver bs.

Upgraded, and I have one major issue: the image on my TV is now blurry. Thinking it was an over/under scan issue I've updated my GPU drivers & AMD Catalyst software, and played with the scaling, to no avail. I've also tried using the Cleartype text tool, again nothing changed. Resolution per Catalyst is correct, refresh rate etc.

Any other ideas to solve this?

Oh wait, do Win7/8 retail keys turn into Win10 retail keys? Or do they become OEM keys?
That is, what if you want to install Windows on a new machine (and remove it from the old machine as per the rules of a retail key)?

I can no longer see my XB1 from my win 10 machine. Any idea as to why? Anyone have this happen?

Nothing changed in my world that could cause this that I know of.

Its a generic key. If you want to install it on a new machine, you'd have to ask MS nicely as your licence is just for a single upgrade.

Any help would be awesome...

I keep getting error 0x8007025d when I'm at the copying files stage (just after the reset - at around 4%). Googled and it says I may be low on space. I have 158 Gb free on my main HD (and more on the secondary one).

Any ideas? Changed my language to US and deleted more stuff earlier but nothing :/

So I had the old Microsoft One Drive app on my old Windows 7 PC but now that I updated I should have the functionality built in. So I go to uninstall the old application but it's no longer listed on the "Programs and features" option in the control panel. I have a second One Drive app now and I have no real way of installing it. Any ideas?

But if upgrading kills your retail key... aren't you actually losing something by upgrading to 10?

I guess there's something to be said for not having to pay 100 bucks for the upgrade, but losing the rights to a retail key also seems unacceptable.

You may want to confirm your network settings

Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing Center>Advanced sharing settings

Ensure your on the private network profile and network discovery is turned on.

You may also want to ensure media streaming is turned on under the all networks profile.

My guess would be that one or more of the installation files are probably corrupt, try downloading the Media Creation Tool see if you still have the same problem.

Can't fix the two other user's settings for different reasons for each user. Start menu won't work or I can't open a program or blah blah. I give up. It shouldn't be this hard. Gonna just reset his computer to 7.

Can't even upgrade my own computer cause of my graphics card. This is a fucking mess. I don't know how people get theirs to work with no problems. I can't find any help on Google, or the fixes I manage to find do nothing. :/

Unfortunately I've done that. I was having issues downloading straight from the update center. I think I may have to dig out a copy of Windows 8.1 and start from scratch :/

I have this issue as well. The temp fix is to remove all of the currently mapped directories from your Pictures Library. Open a File Explorer window, expand Libraries on the left (Show Libraries first if needed), right click your Pictures Library and remove all of the mapped directories. You may need to do this in your Pictures Quick Access as well. I've remapped one single pictures folder to my library and the Photo App is staying up, but that doesn't really help as I have thousands of more pictures. It seems when I add one more folder to the library it will crash again. Not sure what the long term solution is. May be another AMD driver issue.

It's probably not an AMD thing because I have a nvidia card/drivers.

So, i'm fucked or what. Used the Laptop from my GF to create a W10 bootstick (from her W7, with the mediacreationtool) because it got stuck on 0 % on my own Laptop (W7) everytime. Used the stick on my Laptop now, installed everything but my own legit key seems not to work anymore.

Does it only work if i create the bootstick from my own laptop?

So, is my only option to re-install W7 > ugrade or create stick > W10 ?? -_-

Yup. You have to do the upgrade from within Windows.

Anyone know how to have windows 10 automatically log you in to your main account without sitting at the password screen?

I am not sure if this works with the new 4 digit password enabled so if you have it enabled you may want to disable it first.

Press windows key to open start menu then type in "netplwiz". It will be the first thing search will find. Click to open. In the dialog box unselect users must login to Windows. From there upon closing the window you will be prompted to enter your password info. If your account is connected with an MSA, make sure to enter your full email address in the user field. Restart and you'll never be asked to enter a password at boot again. This also works on 8.

Well, i'm sick and can't really sleep and i like installing and updating stuff ... my body is ready.

Look for something in this thread to regedit and force the upgrade instead of the media create tool. The tool seems to cause issues for some.

Is the System process (ntoskrnl.exe) supposed to use this much memory, or is it a leak?

Here too, even after the update. It starts at 0.1mb and keeps growing as I use the computer.

I've become incredibly impatient with Windows 10. This constant nagging about admin rights and whatnot is killing me. I can't save a file with a program unless I run it as admin. But then I can't drag-'n-drop files from explorer into said program. (Which is a real pain when it comes to using FTP software!) Every time I adjust anything in random folders I get some pop-up about confirming my action (with the little admin icon next to 'ok'). Be it moving, deleting or renaming a file or even creating a new folder...

There's just no end to it. My account is the only account there is (carried over from Windows 7) -- it even says I'm a goddamned administrator. I've tried turning off so many security options... Even tried disabling UAC all together using regedit. But that kills nearly every Windows (Metro) app which quickly becomes a pain.

If anyone can offer even the slightest bit of assistance, I'd be incredible grateful! Otherwise I might have to start looking for my Windows 7 install CD...

I honestly have not touched anything. I closed it down and went to bed. Next day after work I tried and it just doesn't connect. The app also crashes sometimes.

How do I stop W10 from putting the settings dir for Dolphin or any game on Onedrive instead of local Documents?
I already disabled it in group policies and used regedit but it still does it.

Well, my PC is now experiencing the stuck on loading screen bug. Not sure what caused it but it takes anywhere from 2-6 hours for load Windows. Perhaps an update caused it? I guess I'm going to try reinstalling the whole shebang once I log in to safe mode and backup my files. At this point, I'm tired of dealing with Windows. Never had any problems installing with any version of Windows before W10. :(

Edit: it just loaded as I posted this. Time to backup.

Anyone else get an automatic repair loop bug?

I installed Windows 10 last Wednesday and until today it had been fine. I put it in sleep mode, but when I got back to my computer it was stuck on diagnosing computer problems. I discovered in my google searches that there is a automatic repair loop bug that can happen and I guess I have it. The computer is restoring to a previous version of windows but it's been stuck on that screen for 20 minutes or so. Maybe it just takes long, I guess.

Here too, even after the update. It starts at 0.1mb and keeps growing as I use the computer.

Is currrently sitting at 72mb - I have 4gb of RAM. I don't think there's anything to worry about there. Memory management in W8/W10 is pretty good, it's probably doing what it thinks is right. It doesn't necessarily clear out immediately unless it needs to free up memory for other stuff I think.

Well, I upgraded to 10 today and now I have no sound. I found some fixes online, such as changing the bitrate on my device. I did so, and now the "Test" sound from the options will play, but nothing else will.

Edit: Uninstalled realtek driver.

Have sound now

My PC won't use my 2nd HDD.

It knows it's there, in the Device Manager, but it won't use it and won't show up under Devices and drives in "Computer".

What do?

EDIT: Fiou, finally got it.

Anyone else having issues even logging into the Windows Store via the app? Even when I try to go through the website, it still doesn't load.

Also, I tried the Xbox app to see if I could stream xbox one to my pc and there is no connect button on the left hand side. The app says I need to update.....but I can't log into the windows store.

Anyone else have a Surface Pro 3 and upgraded to Windows 10?

I think it borked the Connected Standby feature, since after 14-ish hours it only turns on by pressing the power button and does the boot up logo stuff like as if it started up from being shut down.

Noticed running powercfg /a in Command Prompt that it says something like L0 instead of the Connected Standby text it said before.

Mine was actually doing that on 8.1, so I'm not noticing much of a difference, aside from the WiFi that drains battery in sleep mode.

I leave it on, though, because the SP3 sucked at reconnecting to WiFi after awakening on 8.1.

I did all of the above but still have no sound, even after reinstalling realtek driver

I'm so frustrated :( someone help pls

I don't even get the test sounds or the sound blips when you adjust the volume in Windows. It's just dead silence

Windows 10 on our laptop seems to not remember to auto-connect to our Wifi. I select the connect when available, but it just forgets it after every reboot. Have to enter the passkey again too.

I had it working as expected on Windows 8.1, it sucks with it messing up now since it can't download updates/etc. since it essentially fully shuts down the moment 14 hours goes by.

(I.e. I check Event Viewer and it does absolutely nothing between the 14-hour period and when I start it up again.)

My PC won't use my 2nd HDD.

It knows it's there, in the Device Manager, but it won't use it and won't show up under Devices and drives in "Computer".

What do?

I had that happen with my second hdd. For some reason it wasn't assigned a drive letter. It really, really freaked me out at first as that's my backup/storage drive and I thought I had lost everything.

Type "disk management" into the search/Cortana bar. It should find "Create and format hard disk partitions" or something in the control panel.

Open up Disk Management and you should see both of your drives, the second one won't have a drive letter assigned. Right click on it and choose "Change drive letter and paths". Hit "Add" and assign a letter to the drive. Then you should see it again.

Hopefully that's your issue too and not something more nefarious. :)

What do?

If it and its partition show up in disk managment (Win+X, you'll see it), try to right click on the partition and assign it a drive letter if it doesn't already have one.

I haven't had this problem so haven't tried this but you might as well give it a shot.

EDIT: Beaten to it.

So I keep trying to check the download progress on my Surface for the Win10 update, but every time I open Windows Update, the window freezes and never shows anything. Any ideas?

Is the Remote Assistance available on Windows 10? I used the program frequently on Win7 to help my parents but I can't find it on Windows 10.

I installed Windows 10 on my laptop and there haven't been any giant issues.

My main problem is going to sound silly but this is a gaming forum. Ever since I upgraded, I can't connect to any servers in L4D2. I tried validating my files and it does download a small 2.2 MB file but I still have the same issue.

Also, Max Payne 3 pauses randomly. Any solutions?

After upgrading to Windows 10 I cannot get The Witcher 3 to run over 45fps. This is with a 980Ti. The frame rate in game is set to unlimited, v-sync is off, and the framerate is not limited within the nVidia control panel either. I have no issue with any other games.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? It's quite frustrating.

edit: This occurs regardless if I'm in Borderless Windowed or Fullscreen.

So it turns out MSI Afterburner was causing the frame limiting for some reason. I'm still researching the root cause, but it's not Windows 10.

So after upgrading my desktop my fan is constantly running pretty hard. I'm not really computer smart so I dunno exactly what to do about this, but it seems like it's not good for the PC, so.... any help is appreciated.
