Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I'm not entirely sure if this will benefit anybody, but I installed Windows 10 on my Dad's Asus laptop, and once everything was finished and I gave the thing a couple of restarts, the mouse would do this flickering thing where it would bring up the loading circle of doom, vanish, and bring it up again.

Solved the issue by uninstalling Asus bloatware software that's supposed to give you touch gesture features for the touchpad.

My icons are not at the correct size, right? They seem too small. It says they are at 100% at the display settings, but it doesn't seem right. idk

They seem fine to me actually. The problem I have with the icons in Win10 is that they look lazily designed.

Yeah they are definitely smaller than they were on Win8, I am using Startisback and it makes them as big they used to be, the downside it's a pay for app.

Holding Ctrl and moving the mouse wheel/scrolling the touchpad will change the size of the icons. One of those sizes is the Win8 icon size.

Guys how do I remove the annoying transparency in all my windows? Chrome is transparent; movies are slightly transparent. You can see what's bellow the window and depending on what is being done it is very annoying.

I upgraded Windows 8.1 to 10, then installed W8 on a VHD (same key my original W8 installation), and after a day, the VHD W8 is asking me for the key, which doesn't work anymore. I presume there's some kind of conflict here? What can I do about this?

And just out of curiosity, let's say my PC dies. To get Windows 10 back, what would I do? Would I use my old Windows 8 key and go through the same process again? I'm not sure how this upgrade process works now that I think about it.

As I understand it your key for 8.1 transferred to 10 when you upgraded. At least effectively...

If you mean hard drive dies or you want to do a full reformat, you can install 10 without upgrading. Your system hardware configuration is tied with your Windows 10 key. All you would have to do is locate the proper version of install media for your 10 version license and install without entering a key. A key will be automatically activated once you're connected to the internet.

As for your original 8 key, I've got no idea what happens to it. I'm sure once the post upgrade growing pains of Windows 10 have subsided, there will never be a reason to need 8.

What if I use a totally new hardware configuration? Bite the bullet and buy a W10? Will my Windows 8 key start working again on a new system so I can use that in the interim? Would I be able to upgrade it again to W10?

I have no idea what's going on

dlamn8ter, is there any plans to release generic Arcade Stick drivers on Windows 10 before Killer Instinct happens? Like, have it think it's a 360 controller? The sticks I've tried (even ones that are supposed to support PC like the Hori HRAP 4) are switching buttons or not having some in other titles and thinking they're in slots/controllers that are more than the two (keyboard and the arcade stick) available.

You guys (read: MS) are planning to release Killer Instinct on PC, so you should really (IMO) get cracking on solving this before it launches. IMO.

In theory, using my logic, I would say if your current PC died (i.e. HDD) and you built a new PC, you should be able to reuse your win 8.1 key (retail only?) as the PC with win 10 is no more. One licence, one machine at a given time, basically.

In practice though...I don't know.

Sleep mode keeps screwing up. I put it in sleep when I went to work twice this week and my computers was on when I got home SMH and it's even screwed up using Wise Auto sleep were you can set a time.

Oh those. Yeah they got smaller - but hey more space for programs and windows.

not really, the footprint is the same, the icon is just smaller for no damn reason.

edit: I guess you get 1 extra icon per 20. So pretty much not worth it for the ugly icons. I also hate how you can't differentiate between 1, 2, 3 or more open windows anymore. Design over function..

Upgraded to Windows 10 last night and now I can't shut my PC down. I get an error (basically a BSOD) and then the PC restarts. I'm thinking it might be a hardware driver incompatibility somewhere but I'm too tired to chase it down tonight.

I'm totally looking forward to upgrading all the drivers on my PC to ensure their latest Win10 compatibility! (not)

eh yeah that's not much. I swear the Win10 taskbar is slightly shorter, but I haven't measured it or anything and again it's not much. Oh well.
You actually can still distinguish between 1 window and 2 windows, but you can't distinguish between 2 & 3 windows. Though honestly "one window" vs "multiple windows" is all that's really necessary.

SIGH
Thank you for the detailed error description, Windows Media Creation Tool.

(If any of you stumble upon this, it's most likely that your internet connectivity is intermittent or your firewall/anti-malware guard is too aggressive. After the Tool has finished downloading the iso or whatever, it launches an external program that phones home. If that craps out for whatever reason, the entire installation/download process craps its figurative pants and invalidates/deletes any changes without user input. Have fun downloading all the files again, chump.)

I cant seem to access any of my pictures or documents since upgrading.

alot of wonkyness abound. Nothing about Cortana even works right at all.

Your Windows 10 key and pretty much any other non-oem key out there for past Windows versions has always been tied to the original hardware it was originally installed to. If you change the system too much, primarily motherboard, then you usually need a new license unless you can talk your way through activation on the phone.

New main hardware (Motherboard)= new system

You will need to buy a new license every time you build a new system. There is nothing new or ambiguous about it.

None of my browsers seem to be displaying any sort of lines (dividers?) on GAF

I think it might have to do with the white colors used because when I switch to the black theme, GAF looks like it normally does. I'm seeing the same thing happen at a few other sites.

Here is a question.

This person gave me her laptop to fix. It's riddle with spyware to the point were you can't even open the damn explore with stuff popping out at you.

I thought this would be an easy fix. Just factory reset. However the factory reset partition is gone somehow. So I figure I can attempt to do a Windows 10 upgrade, then fresh install. However this thing isn't letting me do anything. Any way to clean install with an .iso and retrieve the key later?

More urgent question, none of my games are working properly.

Everything that I launch no matter how intensive is running at sub 5 FPS. Rocket League, Arkham Asylum, Left 4 Dead, nothing works properly.
Reading online, someone recommended running as administrator and people responded well to it but it isn't working for me.

I only have one issue with Windows 10 at the moment, and that's the Mail app.

Each time I try to add a google account, it gives me an error and says problem connecting, which shouldn't be happening.

Sometimes it even loaded the sign-in screen to change with an error screen instantaneously.

Any suggestions?

I see the lines right there in your screenshot. Maybe it's your brightness/gamma settings.

Well, I give up. Been trying different things for the last few days to fix the misaligned small icons issue I posted many pages back and nothing has helped. I was hoping the cumulative update that popped up on Windows Update would fix it but, alas, no.

I almost 100% certain it's a software bug. At least it's not system breaking. Here's hoping Microsoft gets around to fixing it eventually.

I just tried installing again and immediately got the same error that plagued me on launch. My computer keeps locking up and it says that Windows had stopped responding.
Has anybody else had this problem? I can't even have it run long enough to check anything.

1 - upgrade to Windows 10 and ensure Windows is activated

2 - download Windows 10 media creation tool and install it on a usb drive

3 - boot from usb drive and choose custom install.

4 - the next screen should show you a list of all of your drives. You can format the the HDD or do it later in disk manager

5 - on same screen, choose the SDD (unallocated space) and continue through install.

Edit - for 4, ignore formatting the HDD and proceed to 5. Formatting here will also add a reserved system partition that you will not need since it will not be a system drive. Just install on SDD and format the HDD in the OS using disk manager.
I just attempted this and when I start the installation tool it says I need a product key. When I put in the Windows 8 key, it says they can't verify it, although it is verified and activated on the Windows 10 from the upgrade. There's an option to skip, do I just do that?
Edit: Found on MS's website. I can indeed skip.

Is there an option to "right click and save" a link? I'm browsing on Edge and wanted to save a podcast by right click and save the mp3 link, there is not option to "save as" only "open in new tab" "open in new window" "copy link" and "inspect element".

Has anyone noticed a change in their audio after updating to Windows 10? Everything on my laptop sounds very, very flat.

Having quite a few problems with the old desktop IE and even chrome on a surface pro 3. Often won't respond to touch or close tabs etc. And then the layout on pages like gmail can get messed up. Think I'm going to restore to 8.1 for a while, see what things are like in other computers in the house seem ok so far.

I can't even install it.

I use the media creation tool and all I get is something happened something happened.

I'm using Windows update to try and it completely downloads the update at a super slow rate and then fails to open and install th update. Then I Need to try and download it all again only for it to fail once more.

Uh

What do I do?
