Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I kept having my computer suddenly zoom out/in when typing. Turned out the upgrade also activated pinch zoom with the touchpad, and having my wrist against it while typing was triggering it. Easily fixed in the advanced options, but boy did it get annoying.

Is anyone having issues with mouse acceleration in games? I have mouse acceleration off and the MarkC fix installed but mouse movement still feels off in Dying Light, whereas my first playthrough was perfect with no such issues on Windows 7.

Is there a setting in game to accept raw mouse inputs?

I installed Windows 10 and now my PC is freezing on startup like 90% of the time. It took several restarts to get into Windows just so I could type this message.

I installed windows 8 from disc, reformatting the HDD in the process. Then I did the Windows 10 upgrade, which worked fine. Everything was working. Then I did a system reset just to make sure my installation was a clean one with no residual Windows 8 files, and that's where the trouble began. During setup it froze a few times. I would wait a few minutes to make sure it was actually stuck, then reset, and setup would pick up where it left off. It froze at 3 or 4 different points during setup, and now freezes almost every time I try to start up Windows. The weirdest part, to me, is that it worked perfectly before I did the system reset option.

edit: Since I was finally in Windows, I went to Windows Update and told it to install what it had now. The restart that Windows Update needed and a second one after that both worked fine, so I guess the issue is resolved. Though I'm still worried about what caused it in the first place, and if it's going to be an issue again in the future.

Dunno how to reduce it, but I noticed my tray icons looking like on your second pic when I did a clean install, but became like your first pic when I installed touchmote (Wii-Remote drivers kinda) which added the virtual keyboard tray icon. After removing the virtual keyboard trac icon they still were that far away. I'm stuck with them being a bit far away now, weird behaviour indeed.

At this point, I'm guessing that the smaller spacing is a bug :(

Thanks for the response though.

You probably should have done a clean install instead of a system reset.

Installed it about 1 week ago, everything seems to be running normally and I can't say i'm not happy with it as a whole.
The only downside is my laptop's battery, used to last 4.30-5h on Win 8.1, now it lasts around 3h. I'm not sure what else i should disable to make it last longer (battery saving mode is on all the time, except when charging)...

why cant i enable windows defender / scan for malicious hardware?

I keep getting this msg

Cant enable it at all

Well are you using a different anti virus software? Because Windows Defender deactivates itself if you are.

I'm having problems with my computer sleeping.

I have it set to sleep after 30 minutes.

Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.

It's kind of frustrating.

Why does my PC turn on by itself sometimes randomly? It's kind of annoying coming home from work and my PC is turned on. I completely shut it down every time I'm done using it. Halp.

An application is most likely preventing the system from entering sleep mode, try running the powercfg -requests from an administrative command prompt the next time you see it's not sleeping.

Open an administrative command prompt
(Search > type cmd > Right click command prompt > Run as administrator)

Type: powercfg -requests if a program is listed under display it's most likely preventing the Pc from entering sleep mode; try closing that program and see if your computer will now sleep.

steam is working so slow in windows 10..it just such a hassle to just open it.

Your best bet is to follow the Moving a Steam Installation and Games guide expect skip step 4:

  1. Exit the Steam client application.
  2. Browse to the Steam installation folder for the Steam installation you would like to move (C:\Program Files\Steam by default).
  3. Delete all of the files and folders except the SteamApps folder and Steam.exe
  4. .....
  5. Launch Steam and log into your account. (Note: The first time you start Steam after doing this it will take a long time and may have to download some files)

If that doesn't work your probably better off just re-installing steam; follow the guide on the bottom part of the page. The SteamApps folder contains all your game content so as long as you keep that original folder you shouldn't have to re-download any of your games.

You may want to check you bios settings and see if an auto wake up or similar feature is set up.

Why the fuck does the start button become unresponsive after a period of time? Only way to fix it is by rebooting.

Have you tried running the System File Checker?

Open an administrative command prompt
(Search > type cmd > Right click command prompt > Run as administrator)

Type SFC /Scannow and let it run if it makes repairs run it again.

Known issue with fast boot enabled in my experience on some setups.

Mail app stops working, too.

You can also navigate to the C:\Windows\system32 folder from any file explorer window; once your there locate cmd.exe

Easier to launch from run command in task manager when none of the Windows key operations works.

You need admin privileges to run sfc, and in my experience it's easier to get someone to navigate to a folder than it is to get them to run a program as an admin through the run dialog.

easiest: right click start button, open command prompt as administrator.

Edit: assuming right clicking the start button still works of course

Right clicking on start button now gives a much less functional menu. By search not working, you mean you can't even use the Cortana bar and type "command" to get the command prompt?

I've pretty much replaced the Run dialog with the search bar, but winkey+R should still bring up Run.

Talking about when it doesn't.

Also Windows X A is easier.

Also everyone should be using powershell.

I'm getting some really bad FPS drops in League of Legends. In teamfights my FPS drop to 18 D:. That didn't happen in windows 8.1. Wtf :(. My notebook is an HP with an AMD A8 6410 (Beema...) and a Radeon R7 260m.

Did you check if the GPU settings were resetted after the upgrade? If the game runs using the integrated GPU of your CPU it's going to be a lot slower. Right klick on the game executable and check if you can force it to use your R7 260m

I just noticed that the search doesn't work anymore after I click on the Windows button and start typing. Have I disabled this somehow? Any help is appreciated.

so i reinstalled Revo Uninstaller Pro and now I cant open it
"automation object not found"

it is NOT a pirated version

the freeware version works, weirdly enough

I haven't checked that topic in a while, but I'm having issues with my PC going out of standby mode by themselves after a few minutes. Apparently it's a common issue mentioned in several support forums, but I couldn't find any official answer on that topic.
Does anybody here know anything about it, or is it just "wait for the update that will fix it" ?

run the command prompt as administrator, type "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" to see which devices (like the mouse, keyboard or network adapter) woke up your PC. You can go to device manager and disable those devices from waking up the machine by unchecking "allow this device to wake the computer" in Properties-Power Management.

If that doesn't help, go to Event Viewer and find out the time in which your PC woke up and the reason. If it was something about automatic maintenance, go to the Control Panel - System and Security - Security and Maintenance - Change maintenance settings and uncheck the option that allows it to wake your PC.
If the event is related to windows update, go to Control Panel - System and Security - Power Options - Edit Plan Settings - Change advanced power settings and then, under "Sleep", disable the "Allow Wake Timers" option.

Hope that helps.

Soooo, my friend has a Windows 7 laptop and he wants me to build him a new W10 machine. Is it possible to extract the W7 key from his laptop and use it in the new machine for a free upgrade?

so frustrating to see my Surface 3 go from the battery saying there is 10 hours left to suddenly dropping to 5 then 3 then 2 within minutes.. thing was rock solid before w10.

come on ms

edit... help? t seems the surface is no longer going into sleep mode totally broken. anyone know a
fix?

default font size is extremely small for me, and scaling makes everything look blurry.

the advanced "change only the text size" option is grayed out for me, why?

So far the text idiosyncrasies have been my biggest complaint with Windows 10. I get all sorts of weird, inconsistent scaling, aliasling, and blurriness. ClearType helps a little but it doesn't look as good as it did in Windows 7.

I think the look is kind of inconsistent in general. There are two distinct looks: store app and desktop app. Both of them have different window borders, right click menus, and I think even fonts too. It doesn't bother me too much, although I hope they'll come up with a better icon pack because the current desktop icons look pretty cheap, especially the My Computer icon.

My wired keyboard hasn't worked since I installed 10. I've got a backup wireless keyboard that works fine, but it's just not ideal for gaming purposes. I haven't really seen any solutions to this problem from the searches I've done.

Any suggestions? My google searches come up with nothing but a lot of laptop keyboard issues

Anyone knows whether the AMD HDMI driver for W10 is broken?

Everytime my PC is on for quite some while, after it got out of sleep mode, the sound isnt working anymore. The TV still shows up in my sound devices, but when I try to play any song on foobar, start a movie, play a game, there is no sound.
In Foobar I even get a error message "UNKNOWN SOUND ERROR" or sth. like that.

So I'm experiencing a really strange and somewhat annoying issue with TeamSpeak 3 and Windows 10. I'm currently hosting a server through a VPS service and all is fine and dandy, however a mere two days ago anyone on Windows 10 was suddenly unable to connect to the server.

I believed it originally to be a problem with the server itself and so after spending a fair bit of time reinstalling and changing things around I've now found that it isn't actually the server at all. I'm able to ping it perfectly fine through CMD, but when I actually try to connect its just giving me a hostname error message. I had another friend running Win 10 to try it out and they connected perfectly fine.

Stranger thing is I even tried running a local server and it wouldn't let me connect, instead giving me the hostname error message. I'm running Windows 10 Pro so could it possibly be an issue there? I've tried multiple restarts and even uninstalling TS but so far nothing has helped.

Skype was acting up and crashed.

Now my start menu flickers for a second before it disappears whenever I press the start key.

Very strange.

So re; the TeamSpeak 3 issue, I finally figured out the culprit. Their latest release, 3.0.17, seems to have broken something in Windows 10 and thus we can't use it. Just rollback to an older version and you should be fine.

I was planning on upgrading my desktop today, but this thread isn't exactly filling me with confidence haha.

I have a Windows 7 desktop, W7 came installed so I don't have a disc. If this upgrade goed haywire for whatever reason I have a big problem. At least, I think? Does the installation have any "return to Windows 7" failsaves?
