Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I haven't checked that topic in a while, but I'm having issues with my PC going out of standby mode by themselves after a few minutes. Apparently it's a common issue mentioned in several support forums, but I couldn't find any official answer on that topic.
Does anybody here know anything about it, or is it just "wait for the update that will fix it" ?

run the command prompt as administrator, type "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" to see which devices (like the mouse, keyboard or network adapter) woke up your PC. You can go to device manager and disable those devices from waking up the machine by unchecking "allow this device to wake the computer" in Properties-Power Management.

If that doesn't help, go to Event Viewer and find out the time in which your PC woke up and the reason. If it was something about automatic maintenance, go to the Control Panel - System and Security - Security and Maintenance - Change maintenance settings and uncheck the option that allows it to wake your PC.
If the event is related to windows update, go to Control Panel - System and Security - Power Options - Edit Plan Settings - Change advanced power settings and then, under "Sleep", disable the "Allow Wake Timers" option.

Hope that helps.

It turns out it was the type keyboard (and associated "mouse") that were waking up my tablet (Surface Pro 2 FYI). Disabling the waking option for those circumvented my issue. Thanks a lot. :)

Have you tried running the System File Checker?

Open an administrative command prompt
(Search > type cmd > Right click command prompt > Run as administrator)

Type SFC /Scannow and let it run if it makes repairs run it again.

I tried it and it didn't find anything wrong. The only thing that works is a reboot.

Every since a Windows update or two I seem to hang on the welcome screen for about 8 seconds, whereas before it was literally a split second and in. Does anyone know why this could be?

Glad it's not just me then.

Also, I'm experiencing lots of stuttering in games and I'm wondering if anyone else is.

Not sure if this is windows 10 or just windows, but I have a bluetooth question.

When i connect my bluetooth headphones, the sound panel shows that i have headphones AND a headset. I can assign my headphones as the default device and the headset as the default communications device. In recording the headset shows up as a microphone.

If any program (including google.com in a chrome browser window) tries to access my microphone, headphone audio stops. Is there any way to prevent this? I also have the worst time trying to get google hangouts to use the headset for sound and mic on a phone call (it uses one or the other, never both), and have since disabled the headset because it's too much of a PITA.

Has anyone tried setting up an ad hoc network? I've tried this on two computers I updated to 10 and after the update, I can still create an ad hoc network, but no device can connect. The signal is broadcasting and detectable, but it'll either get stuck on "Obtaining IP address" or "IP configuration failure."

Also, Bluetooth implementation is still severely mishandled. Why isn't there an easy way to connect/disconnect from a device without having to remove it? That, and I still have to manually go into my audio settings and activate the Bluetooth as the default device, whereas as every other portable device handles Bluetooth audio by defaulting to that device automatically once connected.

I really dislike that they kept this this split access between Metro and traditional system options. Why can't i just right click on a Bluetooth device in Metro and view additional options, like disconnect from device? That's less advanced and more convenience, compared to having to go into Playback devices, right click on device, set as default device and then do the same when you want to switch back. *shakes fist*

anybody seen a freeze like this before?

LVntbF2.png

didn't see anything in event viewer

not sure if this is windows or my new monitor being weird

Does anyone know how I can completely remove Chrome from my computer? For a few weeks now Chrome randomly hangs when I'm on YouTube and I can't upload/download stuff. I've tried to uninstall, but it seems like it keeps stuff somewhere on the drive.

I have an ASUS Blu-ray drive (3S-ASUS BW-12 B1ST).

It was working fine in Windows 7, but Windows 10 doesn't even recognize it. I did the free upgrade, and its pretty much the only thing not working. ASUS has not yet made any Win 10 specific drivers).

i didn't see anything on a search of the thread.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Oh god someone help please?

Nvidia GeForce Experience popped up saying new drivers were available. They were literally called Windows 10 drivers. After downloading and starting an express install, the PC froze, then restarted.

I'm now in an endless loop of Diagnosing PC, Repairing PC, Automatic repair (Your PC didn't restart properly), Restart.

Restarting just repeats the cycle of it trying and failing to fix the problem. Advanced options including restoring to a point, I don't yet have one made :L continuing to Windows 10 which also just restarts, Resetting PC (which doesn't work anyway because it fails somehow). So I am out of ideas :S

restart to safe mode, delete the video adapter driver.

Oh boy... they've finally allowed my second-gen Atom integrated graphics to pass compatibility and it takes FOREVER on my Lenovo Lynx... at this rate, I'll be lucky if it finishes tomorrow. Now I'll have to read my eBook tonight on the shitty Android tablet :(

F8 and shift+F8 theoretically should still work for getting into safe mode according to #4 in the following link...
http://www.7tutorials.com/4-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-10

But if you have UEFI bios or an SSD, it won't work. I guess your other option is to make a recovery disk as in #3 in that link.

Yeah F8 isn't working. And my OS is on an SSD... Safe mode doesn't work on them? D:

I meant specifically F8 and shift+F8 key combinations won't work to get you into the boot menu.
If you make a startup disk, then you should be able to get into the startup options and follow the steps for #2 to get into safe mode. You might need to be IN windows to do that though.

Well, I figured this out. I just kept changing the ad hoc name and password over and over and eventually my devices were able to connect to one of the new ones. After establishing that, I changed it back to my old network and magically, it worked.

I have no idea what that worked.

I need help; going mad here..

I can't upgrade to Windows 10 (64 bit). During the installation, shortly after beginning when the circle/percentage thing comes up my PC restarts and then restores my Windows 8.1 installation.

I've tried upgrading from 8.1 (64 bit) and 7 (64 bit). The only time I've been successful is when I've tried it from a Windows 8.1 32 bit installation to Windows 10 32 bit (which I don't want as I have a 64 bit system).

Windows 8.1 is giving me the Windows update error code 8007025D-2000C but even after multiple Googles I still can't fathom it out. Any ideas?

What device do you have? My partner has a 64-bit Asus tablet but the system only allows 32-bit installs. 64-bit isos are ignored and forces the system to reboot normally.

I have an Intel Core I5-4670 (3.4 Ghz), 8 GB ram; Windows 8.1 and 7 64 bit install fine.

I've tried via the disk method as well as the update method and both fail during install. Annoyingly the 32 bit version of Windows 10 looked/performed great but I do want access to all my ram.

How big is the hard drive?

The SSD I'm installing it on has 187 GB on it free and I've always made sure it has 100 GB free whilst trying to get it working. I was worried it was the drive for a while as since installing it I get a BSOD now and then but it installed fine with the 32 bit version.

What is the SSD?

If I'm reading this correctly, when the PC restarts to show the circular %, the installer restarts immediately despite saying 0%. Is this what is happening?

Samsung EVO. And it gets to the copying files, and around 7% before resetting. I'm on about my 15th attempt. (And the one time I did the 32 bit installation all was good..)

It was the first few times I tried; software up to date too etc. Since getting it I've had at least one BSOD per day. (but then again Win 10 32 bit worked first time :/)

Windows 10 has been giving me problems.

I got windows 10 installed on an ssd and whenever it goes into sleep mode for a bit (more than an hour) and I wake it up the laptop crashes and I have to restart it. Sometimes it also crashes when its booting up as well.

Anyone know what might be causing it?

You used the Samsung Magician or whatever software that is used to check that, right?

I don't own any Samsung drives as I refuse to own a TLC NAND based drive. If I considered Samsung, I would only use the Pro series.

Your current stable installation without 10 has BSODs?

At this point, either your drive or RAM is busted or you need to update the BIOS on your motherboard.

Stop attempting the installation for now. 15 times? I would have stopped after 3 times.

Usually the video driver.

Video card?

Yeah, I had Samsung Magician.

My last upgrade to Windows 10 had now BSOD's. My attempts to get Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 on here resulted in lots though.

As for my Ram; I did a few memory checks and all came back clear. Shouldn't this mean it's a okay?

RAM should be OK. Windows Memory Diagnostic is reliable.

I just thought of something. Usually at the first stage of the installation (circle/percentage screen), the CPU/GPU gets really hot for some odd reason, and on some setups, the fans kick in on full blast.

Windows 10 Preview destroyed two Nvidia graphics cards for me. I'm now on my third with a fan that runs on a dedicated setup. These cards died were under normal Windows use because of buggy Nvidia drivers.

Hm. Wondering now if it's the drive or the GPU.

If I buy a new hard drive to replace the one in my PC, how do I transfer the license over if I'm using a local account?

Disk cloning is an option. You may have to move the recovery partition back or forward using GParted before cloning.

From recent reports, clean installing after upgrade does work as Windows supposedly remembers the hardware ID.

I can't confirm that since I have not yet tried it.

Assume if use the on board graphics instead of my 660 GT I'll know? Will try again soon. Else I suppose I could try my HDD tomorrow (not sure if I can face opening the case tonight).

Here's a weird one. I have a Monoprice mechanical keyboard that plugs in via PS/2. After updating to Windows 10, the 1 key along the top number bar won't type a 1, but if I hold down shift it will still type a !

EDIT: Scratch that, just tried my wireless Logitech keyboard. Same thing there. I can't type a 1 unless I use the numpad.

EDIT 2: Using the Onscreen Keyboard won't even type a 1, but still types a ! if Shift is used.

Yeah, I've done a clean install after I upgraded but I figured something was saved in that Microsoft recovery partition to let it know who I am. That wouldn't be available if I buy a new drive. And I think I have to because mine is about to give out.

I installed it on a friend's laptop and he's having an issue with the size (width) of the scroll bars on Edge. I tweaked the registry to increase the scroll bar widths and it effects every other Windows application but Edge.. any ideas?

I've used "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" [type those words in your start menu] to successfully copy an installation over to a new hard drive.

Use the "Create a system image" feature and back up to DVDs or external hard drive.

Switch the new and old drives out.

Run the Windows 10 setup from USB or DVD but instead of clicking install, click recovery. Use System Image to restore the installation. Alternatively, you can also create a system repair disc and use that instead.

You may have to move the recovery partition using a Linux Live distro with GParted to use all the space on a bigger drive after the cloning process.

WOW! So its been nearly 14 hours since I started doing an upgrade on my first gen Lenovo Lynx. It's been sitting on the startup screen showing the Lenovo logo (as it does on this tablet, instead of the Windows logo) but the cursor thing is still spinning so I know it isn't frozen. I always new the hardware was slow with its second gen Atom and abysmal solid state performance but this is just insane. 14 hours and no signs of progress or being done. I'll let it run for another day and see where it gets me.

Have an atom setup that only took a few hours.

Mine did the same thing the first time I tried to upgrade. I ended up forcing a power down after 3 hours of it just sitting there and it reverted back to previous os when I powered it back on. I then did the upgrade again and it went through with no problems. Not recommending that you do that but that's what I did.

I'm not a big fan of how long it takes the new Calculator app to complete loading up. There's like a slight delay between initial boot up and being usable.

Geezus, file explorer is so slow navigating in file chooser boxes from within other programs. (and sometimes file explorer itself)

trying to navigate to files and such is excruciating... W7 was blazing

You're right there. It almost feels like they're adding flair for the sake of it here.. we just want our damn calc up fast.

Thanks guys. I decided to force restart because 14 hours seemed too abnormal and lo and behold, a Windows Update failed (not... not the install though it rebooted for via the upgrade app). I retry the upgrade app and it brought up the windows update screen saying that an update failed. I reapply the windows update (note not the upgrade app) and it goes through. I then rerun the upgrade app and it sits there for a few minutes and then exits with no prompts. After a confusing minute of thinking what to do next... should I rerun the app(?)... I go into windows update to see if it said anything about the failure and...

THE DAMNED THING IS REDOWNLOADING ALL 2GB of WINDOWS 10!!

Well there's nothing I can do but let it do what it wants :(

I'm not sure what it is, but for both of my computers (work and at home), I have calculator pinned in the start menu. I have to click two times before it opens.

Anyone see a non-responsive Start menu on a machine yet? I've installed W10 on six machines now and my buddy's Toshiba laptop sometimes has a malfunctioning search feature (searches forever). It requires a reboot to reset it.

I get this on my machine too. It didn't happen when I did the 8 -> 10 upgrade, but I did a fresh install and now every so often, my start button just doesn't do anything if I left click on it. I can right click and still access those features, but not left click. I have to restart to fix it.

I have some programs I'd like to install, but Windows stops me and says that they're not compatible with Windows 10.

The thing is I don't care. I need them installed anyway. Surely things have not changed so drastically.

How can I regain control of my PC?

Have you tried running the installers in compatibility mode?
