My windows is downloading a large file right now in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\2fc835a6fa4ecd2c104c42ba29218a5d called BIT3773.tmp.

Does anyone know what this is? It's 20GB.

I deleted it in safe mode but when I restarted normally it started to download it again.

Despite not being aple to upgrade because of the second boot phase bug during installation - I will just try to force a clean install and call it a day (I know it won't work either). This is infuriating.

You don't even need to download a tool for that. There's literally a setting in Windows 10 that prevents it from downloading drivers.

Go to the Control Panel (the real one), then enter System -> System Properties -> Hardware tab. Then click Device Installation Settings. From there just click "No let me choose" etc. Then you can finally check the "Never install drivers through Windows Update" box.
Thanks, you're a lifesaver. They like to put these settings in the most random places.

Why does Windows 10 never remember my selections for files.

I swear every other day I click a picture or video and it asks what I want to use to open it.

just remember vlc and bugger off. I don't want to use your crappy store apps.

Do you click the box that says "use this every time"?

Yes. Every time. I have even gone into the old file association thing and manually set them but it seems like every time one of the store apps updates it just forgets everything or resets it because you want to use that.

tbh this is just one of a bunch of minor little things about 10 I don't like. I only notice this one because it happens a lot. I've had problems with it recognising USB devices, doing backups, visual glitches etc.

Update for a large game maybe? Do you have the Fable Legends beta installed?

That may be it. Problem is it's taking up almost all of the space left on my SSD.

Edit: That was it. It was downloading in the marketplace updates. Didn't even think to look in there.

How do I pin stuff to the start menu. It only says most used

You should be able to right click to pin to start menu. They will show up on the right side.

Press F12 to open the Developer Tools.
Click the "Emulation" tab.
Change the Browser profile to "Windows 10 Mobile," change Orientation to "Landscape", and change the Resolution to "Default."
Enjoy.

After installing Windows 10 in August everything was cool for a few weeks. About 2 weeks ago my local area connection started going out. I have to restart to restore a connection. Anybody have any ideas? I thought maybe it was a driver issue but according to Windows 10 my driver is up to date.

Here's my info:
Windows 10 Pro
Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet - Driver Version: 15.6.12

Thanks in advance.

I have windows 10 on a SSD that I believe is going bad. I would like to perform a clean install of 10 on a secondary SSD already inside my PC. What is the smoothest way of going about this? My only real concern is if my copy of Windows doesn't register again since it is on a new disk. Help me out GAF.

Edit: I upgraded from a full license of Windows 8.1 and not OEM. I believe I still have that license in the event I need it.

Well I was having trouble with permissions on a user directory from an upgrade, couldn't solve it, reset the PC, still had shit wrong from a brand new install. Was buggy and unstable with freshly installed programs (League and iTunes are the biggest ones).

I'm back on Windows 7 for now. God I hope it improves over the next couple of months.

You should be OK with the fresh install on the new SSD. The license is linked to the motherboard, as long you don't change that out you won't have to reactivate.

Oh my god. This piece of shit pushed through an Nvidia driver update again, even though I downloaded the stupid tool to prevent Windows Update from installing GTX 460 and GTX 770 drivers. Once again breaking my triple monitor setup so that I have to go back to drivers from like March. This shit is getting really old.
Wait a second. how is it screwing up your triple monitor setup? Mine is wonky too. One of the cables is going to my TV, so it's not ALWAYS on but still. It sometimes starts flickering on and off and then recovers after 5 or 10 seconds.

Does anyone here have any indexing issues? (I can't search in the thread right now, as being on mobile and behind a corporate proxy make it super hard to browse GAF)

My search has always been fucked up, both when I upgraded from Win 8.1 and even now that I fresh installed.
My setup consists of two drives, an SSD with Win10 and some programs and an HDD with heavy stuff and games.
I changed the indexing options (and rebuilt the index too) to add the program folder on the HDD, and there I could have screwed, I guess, but I can't find a way to reset the indexing to the default settings.

What happens is that when I hit the Win key and start typing something, it says "We're getting search ready", like this:
26475d1438158153t-were-getting-search-ready-error-windows-cortana-search-nwzuhch.png

and it takes A LOT of times to find almost anything, except a couple of apps I installed before changing the index (IIRC), that always pop up immediately.

If I wait long enough it starts showing basically any file containing the query both in the file name and sometimes in its contents (even though I made sure the "index file content too" checkbox is not checked).
Also, if I search for Control Panel stuff, they rarely show up, and when they do, they usually end up at the bottom of the huge files list.
I also thought to uncheck all non .exe files from the indexing options, but there isn't an option to uncheck all, making it basically impossible to do by hand.

Fact is, the search, like this, is just not useful at all. :(

I've had this occasionally, along with the Start button being totally unresponsive. Frustrating. Each time I've had to reboot for it to come back to life :(

Guys this is driving me crazy: The taskbar doesnt autohide, after some time it works but get stuck without hiding , I have to restart windows explorer process to make it work again....for a short time.

Any solution?

I have the same issue, doesn't want to autohide even when it is set, which is annoying because ti regularly overlays over my illustrator/photoshop tools meaning I have to move the taskbar constantly

I have my mother's tablet set up with everything, and all I want to do now is to find an easy way of switching to full screen when connected to the TV via HDMI. It's set to duplicate by default but the only way I've found to switch to display only on the tv is to click search, wait for the keyboard to come up, select full keyboard, press windows key and p. This is not only far too fiddly for me alone, never mind my technophobe mother, but to navigate menus and then to guess where on the touchscreen will touch what on the television... which is obviously annoying and completely out of the question.

Is there no way to set the display on the television to the full screen rather than have massive black borders since the tablet is running at 1280*800 or similar and the TV won't oblige with a filled screen?

anyone know of a fix to make cortana work.

on my laptop i accidentally didn't realize i installed the wrong language. long story short i already changed the language, region, speech to US and cortana still won't work.

Right this is really starting to frustrate me now...

Certain things on my Start Menu keep moving/deleting from my Start Menu...

Mainly Calendar and Mail. Which are at the top of the menu, half the time they disappear so it's just Weather. But then when I find the apps and go to pin them, it says unpin (as in, it still considers it pinned)..

What gives?

If you set it to only display on TV once, it should remember to only display on TV every time you connect the HDMI cable. Does it not remember?

So is it possible to use linux via usb? I'm trying to boot from usb and use ubuntu on my laptop but nothing is working. I keep getting errors about no usb drive and I think secure boot is just blocking me from doing anything.

It's definitely possible. There are tools for making bootable linux usb drives. You should be able to just drag the files on there, but that hasn't been working for me, so maybe the tools are doing something I am forgetting.

Be sure to enable legacy (non-UEFI) boot, if that's an option.

So, I did the 'go back a version' thing in Settings. Not knowing that it doesn't even bother to ask you to confirm, it just goes ahead and does it. Now I can't get back to the current version of Windows 10 and it says my Insider Preview will stop working on Oct 1st. The Store doesn't work anymore and I think somehow that is related.

Thoughts or am I gonna have to reload?

Well thus far I've turned off secure boot and it loads when I go into the bios and save changes but it doesn't save anything I've done once linux is shut down. Then I tried changing the boot mode to csm and that worked but then windows wouldn't load at all so I had to boot back into the bios and change it back.

edit:Finally got it working. Formatted my usb since my friend made an install using his linux. Instead I used the universal pen installer and it's working exactly as intended. Guess I need to get a bigger USB drive for more persistent data.

Sorry if this question has already been asked but I’m considering upgrading to windows 10 but there’s a few things I’m not sure about. I currently have 8.1 installed on an ssd and everything else including default file directories for music, documents, pictures etc on another hdd. My question is if I upgrade will these directories reset when I upgrade or will they stay as they are. I really don’t want to have to go through and adjust default file locations again

I am attempting to upgrade to Windows 10 via the taskbar icon and this little circle has been spinning for the longest. Is it downloading now or something?

I have been unable to upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1, so I bought the retail version from Amazon. It'll arrive on Wednesday.

I was wondering if I could install Windows 10 Pro through a disk that I make and update everything before I get the package? Does Windows 10 limit any functionality if I don't activate it right away?

Anyone else's iTunes totally nerfed on Windows 10? I just updated to 12.3 hoping that'd fix the problem but no luck. Basically tracks take about a million years to play where as on Windows 8.1 they used to run instantly. I'm having a similar problem with video files using VLC and GOM Player so I'm guessing there's something not working behind the scenes loading files from my hard drive or something? I increased my page file to the recommended level but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Anyone encountered a similar problem and managed to fix it?

My wife got a Surface Pro 3 yesterday and the two finger scrolling is so terrible in Chrome. It feels fine in MS Edge. What's weird is two finger scrolling works great on my MSI laptop running Windows 10 and Chrome. I've tried setting smooth scrolling to be enabled but it doesn't help. Smooth scrolling also isn't enabled on my laptop and it's fine. Does anyone have an idea why it's bad in Chrome when using the Surface Pro and the Type Cover but not on my laptop?

Can you open a tab to check chrome://flags and see what's under "Enable touch events"?

Set it to enabled. Default is automatic.

At one point, the touchscreen didn't work on resume in some Chrome builds.

Maybe that will help.

Probably not since you said the touchscreen is working.

It seems marginally better when forcing it to enabled and turning on smooth scrolling, but it's nothing like my laptop or when using Microsoft's built in browser. I could understand if it was Chrome in general that didn't work, but find it odd that the combination of the Surface Pro + Touch Cover keyboard + Chrome makes it terrible. I feel like there's some setting I haven't set to fix it.

Check if Power Management is putting the drive to sleep after a period of time.

Even after I disabled that, there can be a short delay before a track starts playing.

so, my PC turned on by itself MULTIPLE times during the night. Thankfully I had a "go to sleep if idle for X minutes" timer.

But it woke up at least twice every hour, from 2 AM to 9 AM. Fuck.

And yes, I have disabled Windows Update (and Maintenance) to wake the PC for scheduled tasks; disabled Keyboard/Mouse from waking up the PC entirely and changed the settings in my current power plan to disable wake timers. Plus, the Event Viewer log is incredibly unhelpful to me ("The system has returned from a low power state."; "Wake Source: Unknown" GEE WELL THANKS, THAT SOLVES EVERYTHING)

any idea of what might have caused that?

I decided to cancel my Amazon order yesterday and order it through 1 day shipping. I got it like a couple hours ago and I have been backing up my drive.

Should I use a formatting tool (like DBAN, Windows Refresh, or Secure Erase) to wipe my Windows 8.1 and all it's files off my SSD and HDD? Does this actually improve performance?

I'm confused. If you've been unable to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 for free through Windows Update or by using the Media Creation Tool, why do you think a retail version you spent $120+ on will work any better?

I don't think it will improve performance. What the formatting tools do is instead of just marking the space free, they will also overwrite it with zero. It's important if you want to erase a disk so no data can be pulled off it, but otherwise I don't think it's so important.
