Anyone else having the trouble of Windows 10 not remembering certain settings? My Skype for instance.
Settings not stored can be linked to a corrupted user profile.

Open cmd and type; set

In the user profile path (far down), what does it say? If it contains .001 at the end or is not your own profile, there is corruption.

Then it looks like your profile is fine.

You mentioned other settings that is not stored? What kind?

In regards of Skype I would uninstall Skype completely and delete the application data folder for Skype.

Just type %appdata% in the run command. Then delete any folder with the name skype.
Also check the folders local and localLow one folder up from roaming.

Restart and install Skype

If that works for Skype, then redo for other apps if they have been installed by you.

PS: You will loose all your settings for your selected apps when doing this.

Utorrent, Skype, general window preferences. I'll give it a go but not sure it'll work, the Skype I'm using isn't downloaded as an app.

so, my PC turned on by itself MULTIPLE times during the night. Thankfully I had a "go to sleep if idle for X minutes" timer.

But it woke up at least twice every hour, from 2 AM to 9 AM. Fuck.

And yes, I have disabled Windows Update (and Maintenance) to wake the PC for scheduled tasks; disabled Keyboard/Mouse from waking up the PC entirely and changed the settings in my current power plan to disable wake timers. Plus, the Event Viewer log is incredibly unhelpful to me ("The system has returned from a low power state."; "Wake Source: Unknown" GEE WELL THANKS, THAT SOLVES EVERYTHING)

any idea of what might have caused that?
Steam always wakes my PC, check to see if that or other programs might be waking it

I'm not sure if something's not working on my end or if this is off by default on W10, but the 'recently opened' jumplists for applications pinned to the taskbar like MS Word aren't working for me (but Explorer and Steam's do). I'm talking about this:

13-pin-to-jump-lists.jpg

This was a great feature on W7. Any way to turn it on? I've been trying to find a solution online, but no luck so far.

Thanks!

Strange. I just tested this with Office 2016 on Windows 10 64bit Ent and it works fine. Opened up a doc, closed it, and it appears under recent within the jump list. If you open up Word and go to options>advanced then scroll down to the display section. Is a value set for the setting" Show this number of recent documents"?

Yep.

It was unchecked, so I checked it and still no files show up. This is what I get instead when I right click:

It's the same for all other software like Notepad, Adobe Reader, etc. so I assume it's a system-wide setting that's disabled it?

search start for "jump list" and it'll take you to the page in settings with a toggle.

You don't even need to download a tool for that. There's literally a setting in Windows 10 that prevents it from downloading drivers.

Go to the Control Panel (the real one), then enter System -> System Properties -> Hardware tab. Then click Device Installation Settings. From there just click "No let me choose" etc. Then you can finally check the "Never install drivers through Windows Update" box.
After my initial optimism, this doesn't work. I have that checked. I have never update checked in GeForce Experience as well. I blocked updates with the microsoft tool for blocking updates. It still pushes drivers for some reason, and I still lose my monitors. Completely ridiculous.

Upgraded to window 10 two days ago and its been mostly pretty solid. I've noticed a bug here and there but nothing too bad really. I have a small issue with the mail app though. For some reason the mail app is not syncing properly with gmail. The app correctly notifies me of any new emails I get but for some reason when I read an email in the app, it does not show up as read in gmail itself. So I'd get 10 emails a day and they'll all be read in the windows app but none of them are marked as read in gmail. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Search is not working correctly for me, specifically the Settings menu. It just does not show me the items from it. Like when I enter "Windows Update" it does not come up withe the desired option but only "check installed upates".

Works on my Surface, not on my Desktop. I tried rebuilding the index but I figured that's not the problem. Cortana is disabled (region) btw. if that matters.

I can no longer connect wirelessly to my Xbox one (project screen).

Just says 'can't connect'.
I've tried to uninstall/reinstall the ac adaptor driver which has worked for others, no good.
I can project my Xbox screen on my surface 3, just not the other way around

Any ideas?

Any particular reason updating to Windows 10 would cause a significant drop in FPS in nearly all my games? In some cases I went from 80-90 FPS down to 40-45. I have an Nvidia GT 980. All updates are done, all drivers, updated, etc.

I'm pretty fucking pissed. Will the revert to 8.1 setting fix this?

Apparently the new Nvidia drivers fucked up.

Context: If I have more than one window open for a given program, they will appear as one icon in the taskbar. If I want to select between them, I need to either over over the icon or click Task View, and then click on the desired window.

Question: Is there a way to make multiple windows for the same program appear as their own icons in the taskbar? I'm currently working with a few different excel windows and it would be nice to be able to shift between them with single mouse clicks.

Right click on the taskbar -> Properties. In the Taskbar tab there's a select dialog for Taskbar buttons - you have to select "Never combine". Unfortunately (?) it will also make all labels for opened windows visible.

Alternative/additional solution: use multiple desktops. Winkey+tab, make a new desktop, open all of your excel files in that desktop. Alt+Tab will now only cycle between documents in that desktop, and only windows on that desktop will be visible on the taskbar.

Thanks guys.

"Combine when taskbar is full" is what I was looking for. Now I feel pretty embarrassed that I even had to ask, lol.

I will take note of the multiple desktops suggestion for the future. I haven't played around with that feature yet.

So I installed Windows 10 in my sister's laptop. It was working fine for a few days, then it got a black screen, even with using the caps + F8 settings didn't to anything. Tried to use cmd: sfc/ scannow and got Windows Resources could not start the repair service.

So as my last option I tried restauring completely, then it got an error now it says there is no operating system.

What the fuck.

I guess my last option is getting a bootable usb stick? =\

That happened to me too. I was on a 950m and my framerate was absolute trash for all my games. They were still playable but something was definitely gimping my system. This was a few months ago (I think a few weeks after it was wide-released) and I've been on Windows 8.1 since then. I think it may have to do with the fact that newer GPUs aren't well-supported on W10?

If you want to save yourself the headaches, I would just revert back until it's more stable. Who knows when that'll be though.

Not sure if there's a general PC troubleshooting thread, but figured I'd post this here. I just bought a new Dell XPS 8900 which I love, aside from one irritating issue. Basically, I'm noticing a kind of ghosting effect. For example, the Windows icon in the bottom left corner has like four or five decreasingly lighter lines next to it. This is true of everything on the screen - I can see shadows to the right of some of the icons in the NeoGAF post box, for example.

I've updated the drivers of the graphics card, and fiddled about with the resolution. I've got a 22-inch Samsung monitor that I'm hooked up to, and my PS3 and PS4 both provide pixel perfect image. My previous PC, which I was using this morning, also didn't suffer from this ghosting issue. Any ideas?

Do the "ghosts" appear on both the monitor & your laptop screen?
Are you using VGA?

This probably has been answered somewhere in here before but I'm having issues with Skype ever since I installed Windows 10. My calls keep dropping and my wifi internet connection goes in and out constantly if I have both my internet browser up and Skype up at the same time. Although it seems to work a little better when I don't have an active internet browser running at the same time. Does anybody know what I can do to fix it? Thanks in advance!!

Anyone else have issues with the app that opens when you cast to Xbox? It's skmethkng like Windows media streamer or something. It works fine for music and video files the first time I play them but then once I clear the list or try to drag more files to the playlist the app always seems to either lock or hang and then I have to terminate from task manager. Not a big deal by annoying.

Quick question, I have a laptop, how do I disable the Task View that keeps popping up when I'm trying to do the two-fingered scroll?

Check your touchpad settings. If there's no setting, then only other option is to google your laptop/touchpad model and hope there's a registry tweak you can use.

Unfortunately no such option, what do I need to search exactly since I can't seem to see many other people complaining?

Do you have the touchpad software installed for your laptop? Or are you just using the drivers that come with windows. The option would be in there

Hey GAF have a problem upgrading to win10.

Have a HP laptop I got when I was in the US a few years ago for really cheap.

Its an HP AMD quad core , came with windows 8. I upgraded it to windows 8.1 and then its been forgotten since when I got a new PC.

Now my PC is kaput and I need to use it again.

Its windows key was mobo emebedded so I used a program online to extract my windows key.

Now I've made a Win10 install USB, it it wont accept my windows key.

Wat do?

I thought MS made it so you could just put in key and get a fresh install.

Nope, you've got to upgrade from your Windows 8/8.1 install first and make sure Windows 10 is activated. After that you can do a 'reset' from within Windows 10 to wipe everything or you can do a clean install and Windows 10 will activate without entering a Windows key.

So the lock screen shows up in english language, with 12hr clock and US format, the login screen is german, and the OS is english again with 24hour clock and DE format (as set). Any way to fix/unify this??

Thanks for the info.

Dang this is taking a hell of a long time. Making a boot install usb did'nt take nearly this long.

How to check and make sure if its activated? Does it tell you?

So my taskbar has become completely unresponsive all of a sudden after my last reboot. Anyone know what the fuck is up with this? Pressing Start doesn't work anymore. Some tray icons work on left click, others don't.

Tried restarting explorer.exe? Task Manager -> Details -> Right click explorer.exe -> End task

I've been having this problem ever since Windows 8.1 and I thought when Windows 10 came out it will fix it but is actually worse now. From time to time my computer totally hangs for up to 10 seconds while doing mundane stuff ( switching tabs in Chrome, using Kodi, opening Libre Office, Etc.). Thing is that I do have a i7 with 6gb of RAM and I know that performance should be snappy and that these hangs shouldn't be happening. I tried installing another instance of Windows 10 on a different partition and the same thing happens, so I don't think that a complete reinstall is in order.

I'm thinking that the culprit might actually be the HDD. It is a regular drive so I was thinking about upgrading to a SSD. Will that help me with performance? It's driving me nuts the fact that a supposedly powerful computer can't even run Windows 10 without hanging up from time to time. Any ideas?

Try this:
http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/com...g-here-are-four-ways-to-fix-it-11364000314532

I had a similar issue: all new elements of the taskbar (start menu, search, notification bar etc.) stopped working for some reason. The command from the "Reinstall all Windows apps" section from the above article solved this.

Yeah, I tried that before and it didn't work either. Had to resort to creating a new user and moving over all my files to that. Really fucked up and I have no idea what triggered it.

Did you do a clean install? There might be something left over from your previous installation. Otherwise, I would try running stress tests on your CPU (prime95) and memory (memtest). You also mentioned that you think it's the HDD. You can check the hard drive SMART diagnostic data using Crystal disk info.

I did an upgrade but I tried a clean install in another partition and the same thing happened so that's why I believe is the HDD. I will try the diagnostic tools you linked here to eliminate any other doubts but I hope is the HDD and not the CPU (it's a laptop).

So I've been trying to figure out a way to skip the login screen on Windows 10. I've looked around and all the tech tip sites mention netplwiz, like this: http://betanews.com/2015/07/29/automate-login-and-bypass-the-lock-screen-in-windows-10/

However, this doesn't work, and Windows boots to the login screen as usual with a message saying that my password is incorrect, and besides that, it seems like there are two accounts - the local one and an MS account one. It's pretty much what the first comment in the above site is describing.

Has anybody successfully bypassed the login screen?

If there are multiple accounts I don't believe it will automatically sign in, you will have to choose one.

I figured out the problem. It was trying to sign into my local account (which I didn't even know I had). In netplwiz, when it brought up the username/password box, I replaced the local username with my Microsoft e-mail and password. Now it works and goes straight to the desktop.

Anyone? :( It's infuriating. SP3 and my desktop is affected by this.
