Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586.

Damn, this one killed my motherboard soundcard and its software.
Now where the hell are my old drivers for the mobo...

AND it triggered something with my AV software... (AVG Antivirus Free Edition 2016)

Not my picture, but this is what happens during every boot up.

I have been having 2 new things happen recently.

1. When I do a search with Cortana or even just from the start menu, it never finds any apps or files. The only results are from bing or the Windows Store. Now I think this is because I turned off indexing on my SSD? However shouldn't it show the files on my second HDD I have attached? Is it bad to have indexing enabled on an SSD? I turned it off because the Samsung program recommended it

2. When I boot my PC, the ASUS logo comes up twice. It looks like it boots, and then it restarts and boots again, everytime. I am pretty sure this is a new behavior. What's going on? Feels like it takes a little extra time booting because of this.

Yeah searching using cortana / windows search brings up bing (who uses bing) for me too.

After installing the new update I had to reset my desktop wallpaper and set default programs for different file types. This was after multiple reboots which took longer than should. Had to re-disable indexing and superfetch again to reduce disk activity. I do not like this auto update feature in win10.

Anyone who has done the new update should look at your privacy settings. There are some settings that need to be unchecked that i don't remember being there before.

It's probably more appropriate to ask in here:

Guys, I hope you can help me out. Why is it, that my Windows 10 Home Premium edition can't upgrade to version 1511, 10586?

What do you mean "can't upgrade"? Does the upgrade not showing up in Windows Update or does the Windows Update throws you an error?

Anyway, you can force the upgrade by downloading the latest Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft's page and upgrade your system from it. I just did this with my mom's laptop since Windows Update started throwing errors for all updates that were queued there (my mom rarely uses her laptop nowadays, so there were few older updates queued) and System File Checker said there are some problems with the system it cannot fix. Upgrading via the Media Creation Tool downloaded from MS site fixed all that.

I have an issue with Win 10. I've downloaded it to 2 of 3 computers so far, and I'm holdin out on computer #3 as the issues w/ computer #2 make me want to switch back to Win 8.1

I run a Plex server off Computer #2 at my girls house, but Win 10 keeps randomly resetting the computer, which means it won't wake up when we try to access it remotely anymore as it's not on or not logged on.

and the much lessor issue is that it will go to sleep, and when it wakes up, it's not at the log-in screen like it's supposed be.I can see that being an issue at some point, with it being a shared computer, w/ kids in the house as well.

Does anyone have a similar issue with Win10 constantly restarting for no reason? (I have it set to prompt me for updates)
is there something I need to check to remedy this problem?

Been trying to update with the media creation tool but when it's done downloading it says "We couldn't update the system reserved partition." I've looked up some solutions that involve going into disk management and extending volumes but I can't seem to do it with any of the partitions except the main C: drive. Anyone know what to do? I can take some screenshots of the disk management window if that would help.

i got the free windows 10 upgrade from paid upgrade 8.1

am i reading right that there is no typical key now?

whats going to happen when i need to upgrade my whole system except for my current ssd drives on them? will it boot up and give me directions?

Are they any compatibility issues of between Windows 7 and Windows 10? I want to update my work PC but I'm not sure everyone on Windows 7 is in the same boat so don't want to muck with the system there.

Before you had to first install the system your key is assigned to, and only then upgrade to Win10. With the latest update (The Fall update) you can use your Windows 7/8/8.1 serial key during a clean Win10 installation.

There might be compatibility issues with some programs. For example CorelDRAW X4 installer won't run on Windows 10, even though the program itself (if it was installed on Windows 8 that was later upgraded to Win10) runs just fine.

Newer programs should work just fine, but if you do have any older ones that you can't live without, you better check if there are any compatibility issues.

I didn't turn off indexing but both of these happen to me lol.

I did some research online and the shut down issue is apparently caused by the "Fast Start-up" feature. So I unclicked it and will see if that fixes my issue with Win10

So I just got a BSOD.. and the error was: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I get BSODs probably on a daily basis and this is one of the error messages. There were a couple of others but I'll have to record them when the BSOD happens again.

any ideas here? I'm not getting much answers from the web regarding this error

Does anyone know how I can get RealTemp to run at startup? I have tried placing a shortcut in the startup folder of my start menu. I have tried placing a shortcut in shell:startup. I have tried creating a scheduled task that opens the program whenever any users logs on, with "highest privileges". I have tried setting the EXE file to run as administrator. I have tried changing security settings to give myself full access to the RealTemp folder, as well as the EXE file. Nothing works. It shows up in the startup tab of Task Manager and is enabled, but the program will not start on its own. Am I missing something?

Edit: I got it figured out. If anyone else runs into the same problem, I was able to get it to work by creating a scheduled task. It needed to be set to "Run only when user is logged on". I had it set to "Run whether user is logged on or not", which apparently doesn't work.

Something in this latest update broke the ability to record anything with Dxtory.

Something with the audio fails, so the recording never starts.

Gonna mess with it some more tomorrow, but I am pretty disappointed right now.

My Chinese tablet, a Cube i7 Stylus won't properly install the threshold 2 update, itll BSOD after rebooting for the 3rd and last phase of the setup with a INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error.

My install seems to still think TH2 doesn't exist, keeps saying I am up to date.

Don't have the time/patience at the moment to do a ISO/USB install (though I have an up to date one), will give it a few more days.

Great, just great. My SP3 doesn't recognize my external displays anymore. I recently installed the Version 1511 upgrade. After plugging in the DisplayPort cable, the displays were recognized at first, but after locking the screen (and the SP3 going into sleep mode), they aren't anymore. Restart doesn't help.

Any ideas?

And yes, the displays still work as normal with other computers.

EDIT: Okay, crisis averted. Apparently my daisy chain setting needed some tuning (the last monitor in the chain needs to have DisplayPort 1.2 disabled for some reason). Weird, as it worked before, but okay.

So my Win 10 install BSOD again... I guess that was why it kept resetting, only this time I saw it happen, and was sitting infront of the computer when it restarted.

Error: Memory_Management

told me to look it up online.
several searches told me to run the verifier, which I did, but then my computer entered an endless loop of retry and fail, retry and fail.
It suggested I reset the computer, which I was willing to do, as everything of importance is on my 2nd drive, but even that failed.

It's also giving me the option to boot into Win 7 (my Win 8.1 install apparently disappeared). Should I do this to load into SAFE mode and try to run the verifier again?

or should I just pull out the Win 8 disc and write Win 10 off for now?

Hmm, any way to troubleshoot sleep issues? PC goes to sleep on time, monitor goes off, but the fans are still on at full blast. And nothing will wake it (mouse/keyboard), so I have to shut down and restart.

Edge has an issue with audio playback on my surface book. Pops and crackles and such, doesn't happen with YouTube on other browsers.

Track pad two finger scroll sometimes goes unresponsive and needs a restart.

Battery feels like its draining too quickly even with windows hello and connected standby off

When coming out of sleep mode, the lock screen isn't full screen and you can see the login behind it because the order 20% of the lock picture isn't stretched. Doesn't occur on fresh boot.

Windows hello recognizes me after coming out of sleep but still demands password anyway and sometimes gets stuck in a dialogue loop I need to hard reset to fix.

Win10 is still glitchy as fuck and the fancy new features on these laptops seem to be causing even more problems.

The original drivers for the videocard work well with RE4 but everytime it notifies me that I have an update for the videocard, it stops working. Not actually updating the videocard but getting a notification. I just have been reinstalling. But since the updates are near automatic, I can't stop it.

I tried to stop the notifications and checking for updates thru Nvidia Geforce Experience but then I realized the Windows 10 gets a hard on about downloading an update. So, for the fourth time, I tried updating, realized the new update doesn't like my favorite game of all time and I have to downgrade. I have the drivers CD still in my computer and I just 'downgrade' every week.

Any way to stop the updates from happening? I figure it's something about the upgrade process. Again, it's just the notification that will stop the game from working. I assume that's because it's already downloaded or started the upgrade process. I can get other games to work (Portal, Trine2, Portal 2, etc) but RE4 is the problem. And I love the game, so expect to put in 30 hours over the next month or so. That's the only game I really want to play.

When I downgrade, the game works flawlessly. 16 GB of ram, a hell of a PC. And it worked on windows 7, so that's why I'm asking in this thread.

FYI, when I decide to send feedback thru Nvidia's Geforce experience, it does not recognize any of my games.

I'm having the same issue with sleep, also the same with shutting down. I've had to hold down on my power button to completely shut it down more times since the new major update than I have the entire time I've owned this PC (over 3 years). Really pissing me off.

Laptop user with Windows 10 and an 860M. Try installing the latest drivers manually.
I personally use driver 355.98 since I've had issues with the later drivers (358.xx).

I also have this happen after the recent Windows 10 update on a brand new PC and would love to know how to resolve it, if anyone's got any pointers. Google wasn't a big help. For whatever reason, after restarting the system to install the update it was telling me a couple of my components weren't yet supported by Windows 10 Insider Preview Build... but I never signed up for Windows Insider builds. What's going on here?

Just put a six year old i7 system to rest and was thrilled with the upgrade to SSD, among other things. Having Win 10 come in and muck up my speedy boot times so soon after upgrading isn't sitting well with me, even if it is only a minor delay.

When I boot my SB with Windows Hello, it says "PC not connected to internet: please sign in with last password used". It recognises me straight away.

I'm 99% sure it is connected to the internet.

I'm on 358.91. It's the one that came with the OEM disk so I'll try to manually upgrade next time. But I thought I tried that and it didn't work. But maybe I just need to wait a few cycles or something. Thanks for the help.
Driver 358.91 is the latest driver version and was released to the public 8 days ago, are you sure it came with the OEM disk?

Yup, I'm flubbing. Looking at the driver ready to go.

I'm on 353.62. And I've had it installed for 2 days and I'm back to square one. Do I just downgrade and turn off wifi to prevent it from trying to update? I'll try the manual update this time and let you guys know.

Yeah, that didn't do it. Still won't launch the game after manually updating the drivers. I'll just keep downgrading it and seeing what I can do.

That's pretty obnoxious even for Windows.
Try using Display Driver Uninstaller to remove all Nvidia drivers, then install driver 355.98. DDU will also disable Windows driver auto installation, with a toggle to reenable it if you want.

I just got the update and I don't like the colour changes, the black taskbar menu and for some reason my explorer windows are now the same colour as everything else (blue), they used to be white which I preferred but I can't make them white again without it changing everything else as well, grrr!

My Windows 10 computer restarts at where the login screen is supposed to be shown everytime now. I'm suspecting hardware faults, but I thought I would check here to see if anyone has had the same experience as me.

Everytime Windows 10 starts to boot now, it seems to work correctly, with the loading screen and progressbar being shown as usual. But when I expect the login screen to be shown, it's just showing a black screen, no mouse cursor, and I can't do anything. And then it restarts the computer after 20-30 seconds.

This started yesterday, just suddenly, and I haven't had any issues with Windows 10 before.

I've been reading some stuff about updates setting Windows 10 in a restart loop, but as I understand it, those cases display more information about what's happening, then what I'm getting.

How do I stop Windows 10 from updating drivers again? The recent build update changed things again as I have already disabled this before. Now I can't disable it again and even prompted me to install an AMD driver.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, occasionally, when I shut down my pc, it would literally take several minutes before it shuts down. It doesn't happen all the time - maybe 5% of the time? It's super annoying. Anyone else experience this? It never did this when I was on Windows 8.1.

For some reason Windows has stopped letting me put icons on the bottom row of the desktop, when I try they always get bumped up 1 row. It was never an issue before so I don't know what's causing it. I've had this laptop for a couple of years and it worked on 8.1 previously and had worked on Windows 10 from day one until today. I'm not OCD or anything but I had everything where I wanted it to be and now it's all messed up :D if I rearrange my icons they get all mixed up again any time I change resolution (like if I play a game below 1080p)

Any ideas folks?

So they added the option back to install Apps to another drive, but like, has anyone managed to make it work?

I tried getting it to install it to my MicroSD on my tablet, but it just doesn't do it. It either errors, or gets stuck on starting download. :X

The Hulu and Netflix apps are suddenly stopped working in the new build. Sucks since watching them on the web drains my tablet battery do fast. Error code says its a Intel gfx driver error. But its already up to date.

I have what I assume is a stupid question, but if I don't ask it it will bother me.

I used to be on Windows 10 Beta, until one day it updated and my wifi wasn't working, due to I assume was a driver issue from the beta. So many hours later I managed to roll it back and Windows would suddenly freeze as it was trying to load. Always the same spot. I got fed up and wiped my HDD and installed the non-beta version of W10 and have been on it since, but now every time I turn on my wifi from my bios Windows still freezes.

So my question is, can beta versions of software physically kill hardware inside a PC? It's only about 4 months old. If not, is my wifi physically broken? It's built onto my Asus Z97 pro motherboard. I assume Windows is freezing at the hardware checking part, but I'm not 100% sure.

For whatever reason I finally got the notification for the Windows 10 upgrade, probably cause I dont have genuine Windows 7, is it worth upgrading seeing as how there were many issues regarding privacy and shit? Should I bite the bullet?

Tried pretty much every repair/erro check method I could find here, posted on Microsofts forum and got directed to two different previous threads about researching this error, but none worked. Ended up doing a complete fresh install of Windows 10, and now it works again. So while I didn't see what the OS actually did when it went wrong, it seems to have had something to do with their latest update, and my Win10 being an upgrade from Win7.

My laptop is crap.
So I want to get some 10 cent movies that are available to rent because I want to hook it up to my TV. Except I paid and I can't download it. Goes straight to an error. I've tried everything and it just refuses to download. Even previously purchased music on Groove outright fail or locked up the entire system even attempting it. Did I just lose my 10 cents?

Since the update I have an icon in the taskbar saying it's safe to eject my SSD, how do I remove this?
