The old start menu.

- classic start menu
- start button
- media center

OMG did they really give in on the start menu? Hallelujah.

I've been using the Consumer Preview since the day it came out, and while I fully understand how I'm supposed to use the bottom left corner, or the windows key on the keyboard, it has never felt better. There's never been a moment of "oh, I get why they did that". And it's consistently a little frustrating.

Got ya, trying to fancy up beta builds. Anyway I assume this should be good for a year like prior rc of windows. Saves on upgrade costs lol.

Yup. But we're already some months into that "year". I've been on Consumer Preview for months now. (its.......... ok)

Consumer Preview was the beta, this is pretty much the RC

Ah I see.

Every time I see "windows 8" I just think to myself, 'why'. I feel like I just got Win7 and that I could use it for another 5+ years easily. Windows 8 go away.

The rumors say the final version is out in the fall, though.
Yeah the rc has always been good for a year, even after the retail version comes out. I used windows 7 rc for months legit till I got the student deal on win 7.
You don't get all the updates but they patch major security holes .

Woot, looking forward to install.

As someone that uses two monitors almost all the time, I'm really looking forward to the multi-monitor improvements.

Oh, that's good to know. Cheers.

It's one of the worst OS Microsoft has ever made

That statement sounds arguable to me... but at the same time, you might have a point. Vista was problematic, but I liked the direction of the UI (same as Win 7 basically).

Win 8 has many things that make me go... :/

In fact, the only thing I like is the fast boot, the improved file copying logic, and I do like the idea of smartphone style apps, lockscreens and notifications.

I might go back to 7 if I find the energy to backup all my stuff.

Great news, i'm so excited to put it on my machine! looks like they have made a lot of improvements from the consumer preview :)

People hate change, especially when it is as radical as this one. I remember HATING using Windows 95 I wished for the days when I could use DOS because I was so fast at it.

I agree. I hate how it boots up so fast, is so efficent and snappy and is able to be used across multiple types of devices. The new taskmanager is so shitty, it offers too much control and data over what im doing. what i really hate is that it beats windows 7 in everything i can imagine. It really is one of the worst OS that ANYONE has ever made.

I've seen quite a lot of exchanges like this.

I think you're quite aware that the user you're quoting knows about all of those advantages, and probably agrees with you that they're a great leap forward. And yet he's reached a different conclusion than you about the OS. Why do you think that is?

Is there, perhaps, something about the OS that you didn't mention in your description that might cause him to think that it's one of the worst OSes MS has ever made? Anything?

Oh, in case anyone wants these (for the Release Preview), here are the lock screen & wallpaper images from the Consumer Preview. They go in C:\Windows\Web. Don't overwrite the folders, just copy the images from the folders you downloaded to the folders in that location in the C drive.

The start screen can be mostly avoided if you prefer the desktop environment and the missing start menu is really no big deal at all besides having to let go of something introduced in 1995 (?).

I agree that you dont have to like the new look or direction, but the OS itself is fast and it works well, even on the "i dont know if it fits the formfactor of a"-desktop.

Of course, my posting was more or less a cheap, sarcastic joke, but still: fromn a technical pov windows 8 is probably the best out there. as I said: you can disagree with the new UI directions, but the objective advantages outweigh the "disadvantages" which are more of a subjective kind of nature heavily.

I would not mind to hear his opinion, why it would be one of the worst

Windows seems to suck every other update.

98: good
ME: bad
XP: good
Vista: bad
Windows 7: good
Windows 8: bad

See a pattern here?

so what about windows 2000.

So your user experience completely revolves around boot times and your task manager? Is that all you can really give me?

The interface is fucking atrocious. Everything is all over the place.

Cool. I like efficient improvements, I like the task manager... It's just every other portion of the user interface is an absolute disaster of functional and efficient interface design

Sure, you think it's cool. Good for you. You're one of the few. You get a gold star.

Most sane people will reject this as the abortion that it is.

First new Windows I'm not even interested in. Seeing what they've done is very disappointing when I'm using a desktop computer. This thing is going to bomb.

The main thing I don't like is that the desktop environment hasn't been improved... and they made it ugly. No transparency on the windows. That might be neat if they replaced it with some striking new look... but it just looks like Win 7 with all effects turned off. It's downright un-futuristic.

I might download this. I really wanted to like the Windows 8 preview, and I think the interface looks cool, but nothing seemed to work as I wanted it to, and as someone who doesn't want to fill their screen up with a ton of useless apps, the interface feels pointless and intrusive. Has there a been a great increase in the number of apps on the store since December?

This is actually one of the best things they've done. Enough with the distracting, ugly graphical fluff that serves no purpose.
