Windows 8 Release Preview

I'm told the Metro stuff bogs down memory and even when "hidden" it's still there sucking up memory. I'm obviously ignorant to all of this, but is there any truth to this? If so, how big or small of a problem is it?

They probably use a few megs of memory when they are suspended (They kept the last X apps suspended until their memory is needed)... But frankly, W8 is much faster than W7, even keeping a few apps suspended, i don't see how anyone would complain about that behavior (specially because the system frees this memory just as needed).

You already know complainers gonna complain no matter what.

I haven't really been following WP8 that closely, so what is the general consensus so far? Is it worth it to get on board with the first release? Or should I wait for service packs and updates like I did with previous versions of Windows?

It's pretty much up to you. You should try the preview first before buying. The prices won't be this low after the promotion ends though.

The general consensus is that it's a big change to the Windows. Beyond that there is no consensus. Opinions on the new direction run the gamut from loving it to despising it to anywhere in between.

The desktop experience is mostly the same with many improvements. The big difference is the removal of the Start menu in favour of the new Start screen. How you like the OS is going to be dependent on how you feel about the "Metro" experience.

The new Start screen is designed to make Windows a better experience on touch devices, and most of the new laptops/tablets/hybrids that are coming out this fall now have touch screens, but also to make it faster to launch programs on a desktop PC. Plus Metro has it's own ecosystem of programs designed only for that environment.

As Jzero said you should get the Release Preview, which is free, and dual booting or VMing it try it out.

Windows 8 |OT| use the corners

Windows 8 |OT| the mayans were right

Windows 8 |OT| my workflow has slowed by 0.2 seconds. /NerdRage

Ok I'll throw my hat in the ring:

Windows 8 |OT| The best Windows yet

It is simple, positive and still provoking without having the haters jump into the thread. No tacky joke and is reminiscent of something that apple would say. It would work quite well, really.
after that, i'd just prefer

Windows 8 |OT|

really, just stick with Windows 8 |OT|

or

Windows 8 and Windows RT |OT|

it doesn't need a subtitle.

Updated Office 2013 icons.

Above we compare the new with the old variants, which could have been updated due to customer feedback, the designs look clearer and more appealing to the eye.

The screenshot definitely comes from Microsoft, but how cannot be disclosed at this point. In any case, you saw it here first and time will show this confirmation of things to come.

Nothing will keep haters away and because there's no such thing, I don't believe anything will insite fence-sitting haters from climbing down their hate fence or crawling out of their hate holes into the thread. In their minds, this is a holy war where they will speak out against corporate control of the way they compute. They've already made up their mind and this OT as much as a platform for their malcontent as much as it will exist for people trying to have a general discussion about the using the new OS. I used to be against sarcastic and jokey names for the OT becaused I believed people don't understand sarcasm. Now I'm just apathetic to the whole thing and hold on to very little hope that the OT will become something constructive. I'll probably become a wasteland of banned accounts
...then again its Microsoft so probably not

Guys, how likely is it that we'll be able to customize all the App Tiles?
None? :(

None, considering that the vast majority of developers will end up using live tiles for some purpose. Customization would completely invalidate that ability.

Now what you should expect to see is individual developers enabling users to customize what their live tiles look like, much like how MyStocks works on Windows Phone:

I would VERY much like to customize how desktop apps pinned to the Start screen look. Metro apps are fine (maybe some colour options)
