So has anyone with a desktop on 8 gotten a touchscreen monitor? Curious for your thoughts on what you bought, if you felt it was worth the investment, what you specifically looked for/wish you looked for, etc.

The upgrade is a download.Upgrade discs are BULLSHIT.
Gonna go OEM.
The upgrade is a download.
Upgrade your Windows 7, XP, or Vista PC with Windows 8 Pro
I installed the RTM before i got my key and holy shit it was annoying as hell. Just wait it out dude the activation notifications are annoying as hell. If you still want to do it just download a clean torrent of the iso of the rtm and put your key in later. So I guess there still is no proper way for a non-student, non-MSDN member to install Windows 8 now and then activate it next week? In Windows 7 you could use all versions for 30 days before you enter a key but doesn't look like you can do that for the 8...
What do you mean?I know the details but you damn sure this isn't an upgrade disc like the old Windows 7 upgrade packages?
Amazon is "price matching" Microsoft's $39.99 deal sorta.

You know what, you are right. It's weird that they would charge you $30 more for just the dvd though.http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wind...7+home+premium

Notice the difference between the two?
In any case, I will be going with this:

Since as far as I can tell, all retail copies are upgrade unless proven otherwise.
As a follow-up to my consternation about W7->W8 dual-booting and licensing issues, I just finangled a DreamSpark Premium account for myself and got a copy of W8 for free, legally, and in-license.
So, uh, I win, Microsoft loses![]()
Alright so I have XP on my laptop. What I want to do is to apply for the 40 dollar upgrade for that license key and then use the download on a brand new desktop. That *should* be fine right?
You "could" upgrade a windows 8 install (without entering the key on first install) then reinstall/upgrade that install with your upgrade key. Has worked since vista. Not really nice to do but does workso just a tip.
An upgrade license is supposed to replace the license you're upgrading. Like I said earlier, it's basically a trade-in program.
Doesn't work any more.
Key is required. Installation won't continue.
Fair enough but does that mean my steps won't work and the Windows 8 install will balk?
Supposedly you will be able to upgrade from the 8 Consumer Preview (Microsoft themselves said this), so at the very least there's that.
You won't be able to install it on a clean HDD, but if you install something else first (like the aforementioned CP) it will work and even give you the option to do a reformat before install, based on what I have read.
Thanks TxdoHawk, I've been running the Release Preview for a while now so hopefully I'm good. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong either as I had XP on my previous desktop as well that died so badly that I couldn't even salvage the key from it.
You could of still got the key with the right software on another computer. Thanks TxdoHawk, I've been running the Release Preview for a while now so hopefully I'm good. Anyone know if I can use the Upgrade to go from Release Preview -> Release? It doesn't need to be a in place upgrade, I'm just curious if I need to install Windows 7 again prior to the Release.
Cool. So as long as you have a license from XP/Vista/7, you can do it.
Amazon is selling W8 for 40. Sort of.

It's the upgrade. The full version is the systembuilder.I'm confused--is this W8 Pro standalone or the upgrade? The description mentions how you can upgrade your comp to W8 Pro, but the product title doesn't indicate upgrade-only.

Man, this is confusing me with all the mixed signals. This site says you can use the upgrade on the RP, but MS is saying you can't?
There's confusion over the term "upgrade."Man, this is confusing me with all the mixed signals. This site says you can use the upgrade on the RP, but MS is saying you can't?
Right, but you need a previous license for XP/Vista/7? Or is that not correct? There's confusion over the term "upgrade."
You can't upgrade a computer to Windows 8 RTM on the Windows 8 Release Preview like you can on Windows 7.
Upgrade = Keep installed programs, files, and settings.
Upgrade from Windows 8 Release Preview will only retain user files. The old Windows installation is named to Windows.old, and the installer proceeds to deflate the image without formatting.
To qualify to use the upgrade disks, the computer has to be installed with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 Release Preview. Only Windows 7 computers will be allowed to have a "true" upgrade experience.
people can move from the Windows 8 Release Preview to Windows 8 Pro using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and will only have the options to migrate their personal files or keep nothing at all when upgrading. People moving from the Windows 8 Release Preview will need to make sure you have an underlying license for either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.
Right, but you need a previous license for XP/Vista/7? Or is that not correct?
