So has anyone with a desktop on 8 gotten a touchscreen monitor? Curious for your thoughts on what you bought, if you felt it was worth the investment, what you specifically looked for/wish you looked for, etc.

A solution such as the Leap or Kinect would be much better for standard sitting desktops. Going out of your way to lean over and touch your monitor isn't exactly something most people would want to do, and you'd constantly have fingerprints all over the screen.

I started using the RTM version of 8 a few weeks ago when I redid the hdd on my mbp. Works great once you figure it out. I love getting free software for going to school.

I bought one of these and it worked pretty well (full system, not just a monitor though). The screen can tilt to almost 90 degrees, so it's able to work better as a touch screen in those cases.

That said, I went back to windows 7 for now, but that's pretty much just because there aren't any full drivers yet. Whenever that happens, I'll likely switch back. As goofy as it seems, it was pretty cool playing fruit ninja on a 27 inch monitor, lol. And it was actually useful for reading certain things, since I can tilt it down and swipe through like it's a big ass tablet.

As a follow-up to my consternation about W7->W8 dual-booting and licensing issues, I just finangled a DreamSpark Premium account for myself and got a copy of W8 for free, legally, and in-license.

So, uh, I win, Microsoft loses :p

Amazon is "price matching" Microsoft's $39.99 deal sorta.

So I guess there still is no proper way for a non-student, non-MSDN member to install Windows 8 now and then activate it next week? In Windows 7 you could use all versions for 30 days before you enter a key but doesn't look like you can do that for the 8...

I installed the RTM before i got my key and holy shit it was annoying as hell. Just wait it out dude the activation notifications are annoying as hell. If you still want to do it just download a clean torrent of the iso of the rtm and put your key in later.

I know the details but you damn sure this isn't an upgrade disc like the old Windows 7 upgrade packages?
What do you mean?

Notice the difference between the two?

In any case, I will be going with this:

Since as far as I can tell, all retail copies are upgrade unless proven otherwise.

You know what, you are right. It's weird that they would charge you $30 more for just the dvd though.

Thanks to you i can have accurate data in the |OT|

Anyone know if I can use the Upgrade to go from Release Preview -> Release? It doesn't need to be a in place upgrade, I'm just curious if I need to install Windows 7 again prior to the Release.

I'm considering joining IEEE to get 2 copies.

Can I get some advice, guys?

I have a Windows 7 Pro machine and want to put Windows 8 Pr on it when it goes retail. I'm going to be buying my first ever SSD (Samsung 840 Pro) and install it blank, transferring nothing. I'm confident I can do this without problems, but the real concern is this:

I am dead set on building a new PC in 2013 and I will be decomissioning this one, save for a few parts transferred (definitely not the motherboard or parts that won't work with my new mobo)

What are my options? Is the "system builder" edition of WIndows 8 Pro out of the question because it supposedly won't be transferable?

Alright so I have XP on my laptop. What I want to do is to apply for the 40 dollar upgrade for that license key and then use the download on a brand new desktop. That *should* be fine right?

An upgrade license is supposed to replace the license you're upgrading. Like I said earlier, it's basically a trade-in program.

You "could" upgrade a windows 8 install (without entering the key on first install) then reinstall/upgrade that install with your upgrade key. Has worked since vista. Not really nice to do but does work :P so just a tip.

Doesn't work any more.

Key is required. Installation won't continue.

I can't believe how hard it is to find a capacitive 12" 16:10 multi touch panel. Or a small monitor with a capatitive multi touch panel.

I have an older 12" Core 2 Duo notebook with a broken hinge and I'd like to turn it into a Windows 8 machine for the kitchen and it seems impossible. Bigger multi touch screens use IR sensors and that can be annoying when you want to swipe from the edges.

What do I need to do to install Win 8 on a new PC? Is newegg the only place with the OEM version? Newegg is so slow compared to Amazon Prime. UGH. Hopefully I can just download it from Microsoft or something on Oct 26. Why are they pushing the upgrade version so damn bad?

After having played with it for 24 hours I can honestly say it is a fantastic OS.

Multitasking alone is fantastic.

It is very speedy and slick and the Metro frontend is not the big issue many have made it out to be.

MS had to move forward and try an unify its operating systems across all devices, and as a first attempt its is really good.

Very happy with it indeed.

Supposedly you will be able to upgrade from the 8 Consumer Preview (Microsoft themselves said this), so at the very least there's that.

Fair enough but does that mean my steps won't work and the Windows 8 install will balk?

You won't be able to install it on a clean HDD, but if you install something else first (like the aforementioned CP) it will work and even give you the option to do a reformat before install, based on what I have read.

Thanks TxdoHawk, I've been running the Release Preview for a while now so hopefully I'm good. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong either as I had XP on my previous desktop as well that died so badly that I couldn't even salvage the key from it.

I had CP on my laptop and updated to RTM. I don't remember it being a hassle: I'm pretty sure I just mounted the ISO and clean installed.

You could of still got the key with the right software on another computer.

I am curios about this also, since my computer has been wipe clean and I only have OEM license on this computer.

I remember what a hassle it was when I bought Windows 7 to upgrade my old XP. Since I have to rebuild that computer a few times the upgrade version would not work unless I call Microsoft to migrate the license. For that I might just as well get system builder and have the disc for future when I need to do clean install.

Since I no longer think a Surface is worth the money investment I'll definitely be building my new home server around Windows 8 and leave it out by the TV for a guest gaming computer (LoL, GW2, Torchlight 2. etc). Looks like the storage spaces feature makes it a viable alternative to Server Essentials.

Anyone else doing the same/any advice on home server building?

Cool. So as long as you have a license from XP/Vista/7, you can do it.

Doesn't even look like it will check for a license. I think the MS guy just has to say that because he can't officially endorse illegal upgrades.

Really, Microsoft should just forget the "upgrade" hoopla and offer $50-60 system builder copies of 8 Pro, they'd get a lot more sales and adoption that way. Why make the people interested in getting in the door ASAP jump through hoops? These are the people who could potentially be your good early word of mouth.

Man, this is confusing me with all the mixed signals. This site says you can use the upgrade on the RP, but MS is saying you can't?
There's confusion over the term "upgrade."

You can't upgrade a computer to Windows 8 RTM on the Windows 8 Release Preview like you can on Windows 7.

Upgrade = Keep installed programs, files, and settings.

Upgrade from Windows 8 Release Preview will only retain user files. The old Windows installation is named to Windows.old, and the installer proceeds to deflate the image without formatting.

To qualify to use the upgrade disks, the computer has to be installed with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 Release Preview. Only Windows 7 computers will be allowed to have a "true" upgrade experience.

Side note: A clean install of Windows 8 creates a 300 MB boot partition as opposed to 100 MB for Windows 7.

Right, but you need a previous license for XP/Vista/7? Or is that not correct?

From LeBlanc:

people can move from the Windows 8 Release Preview to Windows 8 Pro using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and will only have the options to migrate their personal files or keep nothing at all when upgrading. People moving from the Windows 8 Release Preview will need to make sure you have an underlying license for either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.

From LeBlanc:

Hm. I have no idea then until the 26th.

I managed to obtain a copy of the RTM from a friend who got his through MSDNAA. I ran the installer, but the first thing it asks for is a key, so I don't know if the upgrade install will work from Release Preview.

Guess we'll find out about the "underlying" requirement. I think it may have to do something what I said about boot partitions earlier. If yours is 300 MB (meaning you clean-installed), then you won't qualify, but we'll see if that's true.
