Windows 8 Release Preview

So after my third install (CP, RP, Final) I'm starting to enjoy using Win 8 a bit more now. Still very disappointed in the lack of polish here and there but otherwise, a solid OS.

My beefs now:
- Metro still has little to no utility on desktop
- Lots of random "Windows" behaviours in Metro (i.e. "ant"/selection lines in UI elements)
- Desktop is very poorly put together in terms of aesthetics: title bar unreadable with black themes (wtf?), Vista icons are just awful now, very inconsistent behaviours (i.e. why does wifi have a slide-in bar?)
- Weird integration between desktop and metro: 2 separate web browsers, metro music overlay not accessible without adjusting volume - not sure why the track constrols are even in the overlay...

Really though, I just wish there was some more polish and thought in the visual design of the OS.

Sorry if this isn't the right thread to ask but have they unveiled any laptops that will be using Windows 8 yet?

Ive needed a new laptop for ages but dont want to get one of those hybrid tablet/laptops. I like the look of the surface but again would rather a traditional laptop.

Ideally I'd like a Samsung (I know they unveiled that hybrid Ativ thing) but have they also announced any traditional laptops with touch screens running windows 8?

The Acer, yes really, S7 looks incredible.

There haven't been that many touchscreen notebooks announced, I think.

Acer has the S7, which is a really great touchscreen Ultrabook. Comes in 11" and 13".
Lenovo has the IdeaPad Yoga, which is kind of a hybrid, but it's basically a notebook.

Some of the other manufacturers will have versions of existing notebooks with a touch screen.
HP has the Envy Spectre XT Touch or something. And I think an Envy 4 with touch that's a bit cheaper.
Samsung has a Series 5 notebook with touch.

There might be more. Would be nice to have a list of all the Windows 8 devices.

So, I've heard, that on October 26th, there are Windows 8 tablets releasing alongside the RT which will be similar to Surface Pro but instead developed by third parties.

Is this true? If so, is it true also in the UK? And which tablets are these?

Edit - Also, please re-release Trouble in Paradise on Surface, I would be so happy.

It still seems that after so many windows versions, Microsoft still hasn't fixed the one issue i've always had.

With the taskbar at the top, Loading up apps can sometimes put their bar behind the task bar. How is there still no detection yet D:

Installed the preview last night. So far it's ok but very odd. I'm certainly not used to all the changes, It's going to take a good while for everything to sync in.

Which ones exceed (or are most similar too) Surface Pro, and would you recommend it?

None exceed the Surface Pro.

I like the Acer W700. It doesn't come with a keyboard cover or keyboard dock, but can be used with bluetooth keyboards. It's base price is relatively cheap. The lowest version starts at 700$ I think (core i3, 64GB).

I haven't seen much of the Asus transformer and the Samsung Pro tab, but they both have those Ultrabook-style keyboard docks. I'm guessing they will be decent.

The Sony Duo is a slider with a full keyboard built in. Less thin, not a pure tablet. However, it comes with some nicer specs. Up to core i7, 8 GB RAM.

If you just want an Intel tablet, but not necessarily one with core processor (Ultrabook components), you might also be interested in some of the Intel Atom tablets. The Lenovo Tablet 2 and the HP Envy X2 both seem really great.

I would be after a good processor, so it seems like the Asus Transformer/Sony Duo 11/Samsung Pro Tab are most likely to be appropriate for what I'm after. Are these all getting October releases do you know?

Pause and Resume the game across Windows 8/RT and Phone. Awesomeness. (and in the future the next xbox I assume, I like where the future of this gaming platform is heading.)

Is MS going to sell a digital retail non-upgrade copy of Windows 8 at a discount, or is the promotion discount only for upgrades?

Not that i know of.

Hmm, so it'll probably be around ~$200 at retail then? For some reason I remember reading that Pro retail would be $60 somewhere in the same duration as their upgrade promotion price, but all I can find now is that that is the OEM licensing cost towards notebook/tablet manufacturers

Microsoft's Windows 8 Pro software will be priced at $199 after a promotional price of $69.99 expires on January 31st 2013, according to one source familiar with Microsoft's plans. The software maker will also offer a Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro upgrade option at retail stores for $69.99 until January 31st when the price reverts to $99.99.

GAF, I have a problem installing windows 8. Here's how my partner portal looks like:

I downloaded 8N, and it says key not required. But when I try to install it it's asking for a key. I entered the key for regular 8, but it says that key is for a different version of Windows. I really don't want to download regular 8 again if I can avoid it, any suggestions?

Random question - is there any way that I can make windows wait to load the desktop/start screen until after all my startup programs have loaded? Alternatively - is there any way to run said programs before a user logs in?

why in the world would you download the N version? anyway I believe you will have to get the correct iso for the key to work. Might be faster to get a torrent of it.

I believe the N version doesn't have Windows Media Player/Center right? I would rather not have them so I downloaded the N version. Guess I'm out of luck and have to download regular Windows 8.
you can uninstall that stuff. And how small is your hard drive that you are worried about that stuff?

Has nothing to do with my HDD. I never trust Windows being able to uninstall something fully, so that's why I prefer to have it never installed in the first place than uninstalling it later.

N version sucks ass... install normal version.

I have N version of Win7 installed and correct key was never able to register it, i still get illegal software notification.

So for Win8, I skipped N version, got the normal one, all works good.

Except for Metro... lol. PDF Metro app opening PDF's makes me want to kill someone.

Yea, that's why you download Adobe reader.

It's not as bad as it was in the previews though.

That's probably where I got it from, thanks
So full = 69.99 (199 after promotion)
Upgrade = 39.99 / 14.99
There's a $14.99 upgrade?

I installed the preview on VMWare, and now I kinda want to shoot myself. :p

I don't understand why I have to use the horizontal scroll bar in not-Metro-Metro mode instead of dragging the window.

Only if you bought a new windows 7 pc from June 2nd

Like you would expect it? It does not transform into a magical or un-useful experience if you mean something like that.

Depending on the tablet, you can use multi-touch finger gestures with the tablet. He's probably asking if any of the Windows 8 gestures work with it.
