Where did all these true believers come from?

I guess if the highlight of my annual revival was the unveiling of a +$2,200 laptop in the Post PC era, I'd be pretty salty and searching for validation too.

I feel like a 4:3 screen could've easily worked with snap. On a 1024x768 screen, the width of the main app would be ~700 pixels which is about the same as it would be in portrait mode.

I am SCARED that people say (?) that Win8 will be as bad as Vista. Please tell me this won't be true.

Why does Microsoft want to give even more marketshare to Apple???

It isn't as bad as Vista. People are simply over exaggerating.

Vista's problems were horrible performance and driver support - something that really spoils the OS's usage.

Windows 8's main "problem" is the change in the interface, i.e. replacing start menu with start screen, and mixing two different UIs (desktop and metro), which right now doesn't look all that great. Those are cosmetic problems, though; you can quickly adapt to the start screen and you don't have to use metro apps. Everything else in the system is vastly improved: performance, desktop's UI (although not everyone is a fan of the ribbon UI), drivers support.

Basically this. Win 8 shares nothing in common with why Vista was horrible at launch. In terms of back end and speed Win 8 is by far and away the best OS and Kernel MS has ever produced to date bar none.

After using windows 7 at work I can say I am buying a Mac as my next computer. I hope Win8 is better than Win7.

What don't you like about Windows 7? I can't think of any real complaints I've heard about it.

At work the programs I use keep getting frozen and then crashing the same goes for internet explorer. It is very annoying to have a customer at my desk and Win7 decides it wants to lock up the program i am using then shut it down. My job recently upgraded to win7 and since then its been one issue after another. Totally put me off from upgrading my own laptop at home.

Sounds like something went wrong during the installation. Windows 7 isn't known for such problems.

Is that everyone at your work or just your comp?

One of the best OS fixes I've spotted so far: "New update available, Windows 8 will automatically reboot in 2!! days"

Assuming people are quite capable to reboot their system once a day, this means the majority of users wont see the Windows needs to reboot screen anymore :)

Pretty much not the experience of 99% of people out there. I think I've crashed my PC maybe twice with Win 7. I ran the early developer preview of Win 8 for four months as my working OS and that never crashed on me either.

I don't think this is the problem with the OS itself. Something different must cause the problems (faulty drivers, malware etc.). I've been using Windows 7 since it was released and sure, it crashed once or twice, but it was rather an exception and not a norm.

I do see it being as big of a disaster sales wise as vista.... and by that I mean it will only sell 350 million copies (what vista sold) vs the 600 win7 has sold and will continue to sell.

Of course this is also a calculated risk done on purpose.... They know it will likely not sell in huge numbers to the enterprise market so they are going to use this release to focus on consumers and touch screens and get 300 million new win8 optimized pc's out there and get most apps moved over to metro so they will be ready to make an enterprise play with win9.

Why? Many hybrids shown on Comdex seem to be both good laptops and good tablets.
Will they be as good as sepatate tablet or laptop? Propably not, but they might be good enough for most people.
Anything bigger and heavier than an iPad is a really poor tablet, and anything with an ARM or an Atom is a netbook and we know those are dying.

People just like convergence. Smartphones are also not good mp3 players and they are at best mediocre cameras, but for most people they do those good enough not to bother carrying separate mp3 or small camera
Smartphones aren't mediocre mp3 players, and unlike smartphones, tablets/notebooks won't be carried in someone's pockets.

Has Microsoft ever addressed the issue with old people and computers? My dad keeps downloading malware and has like 10 toolbars on his browser. Every couple of months I have to go in and clean the thing out. Today I find out he bought some pc power booster thing because it said he had 15,000 viruses. The thing installed itself on his system, it's malware, and he gave it his credit card number. What the fuck. I swear if windows 8 has an old people mode that won't let you download/install anything that I would buy him a new pc so I don't have to deal with this crap.
He also tries to delete stuff thinking is a virus. This like ie, java, and anything that sais adobe(I'm guessing he doesn't know the difference between a pop up and an update notice)

Tell him to stop visiting shady ass porn sites.

I already know what hes doing. But the man is to old to change, and he'd never admit to it.

Maybe in Windows 8 you can only allow him to install metro apps and an admin needs to install desktop apps. That should prevent these sorts of issues, as all Metro apps are pretty limited and sandboxed.

Honestly, as long as he is clicking those videos it's going to be a problem. It's a double edge sword, if you do those things in real life your penis gets a virus, if you watch them online your PC does. What can you do.

change his DNS to something that has url filters setup. NortonConnectSafe is a good one.

Get him a Windows RT laptop. Would completely remove those issues.

Here's some shots of Windows 8 release preview running on the retina macbook pro for the lulz:

As far as I remember the biggest issue with people had with Vista was that it seemed horribly bloated and slow. That's certainly not the case here, Win 8 is super fast and fluid.

UAC was the other big thing people complained about at the time. Metro seems to be the thing people are complaining about here but once people realize they don't really have to use the Metro side except as a launcher I think people will see this is a very solid OS.

I think the first thing everyone does when they install it is play around with the Metro stuff because they figure that's how they're going to be using the computer. It's really not though, unless you're on a touch enabled device.

My friend's Mac crashes constantly. It's not always the OS's problem.

Driver support i think was an issue early on.

Vista was only slow because the disk indexing would take over. Windows 8 does look to be another Vista. Vista was pushed through when it was clear to people testing it wasn't ready. Just in this thread alone we have multiple people with random lockups, not a good sign for a kind of 'RC'. Saying you hardly ever see Metro so it's not that bad is a stupid point, as that is the #1 'feature' of Windows 8. Right now Metro is regressive from the start menu, it uses the entire screen and displays less information than the Start Menu, especially when searching. The only point of Metro is to trojan horse Microsoft into the tablet market. Some people like Metro, some people liked HP NewWave and some liked the Hot Dog Stand theme, we'll see what the public perception of it is.

Vista wasn't a bad OS and Windows 8 isn't a bad OS, but that doesn't mean it's a leap forward, some steps back with some steps forward.

Unless you have selective memory, Windows 7 had its fair share of issues for Beta and RC, particularly networking that people couldn't connect upon bootup.

That was all fixed in RTM.

It doesn't have a per device cost like a windows license and the cost is amortized over hundreds of millions of ios devices and just included in company R&D overhead. Apple R&D costs are tiny compared to how much revenue and profit they make every quarter.

1. Do you have any links for that, along with how much they pay google?
2. Google branded phones don't pay for those either.

There is still a cost for IOS
Not on me , but its been adressed by Hardware manufacturers before , not an out right price but that there is a charge to install the andriod store . That is why many of the mods like cyagon don't have the app store in their builds.

Don't forget each company is also paying MS to make andriod tablets and phones.

Not near as widespread as this, iirc seemed to be driver related, and it certainly wasn't all fixed RTM.

You realize none of that is sounding good compared to cheaper, 10-hour battery life <5W ARM CPU tablets (the entire iPad charger is 12.5W!), without any (noisy, prone to fail)fans inside them, right? That's before you even get to the crushing superiority of the ipad app store over other tablet OS's.
if you just want to watch movies and surf the web sure I can see how an ipad might be better. Then again there is WINDOWS 8 ARM and those devices will offer the same battery life and weight as the ipad.

For those of us who expect more from our devices slightly heavier tablets with much more powerful CPUs will be fine. My acer iconia w500 was getting 5 hours of video playback . Using a shaped battery like apple uses they would be able to increase the battery size and of course that would lead to higher battery life. My fathers ipad 2 gets about 6 hours of video playback . So the diffrence isn't as great as you might belive. OF course the w500 used the c-50 which was a 9 watt part so a 17w part would need a larger battery

Of course the ipad 3 has a 42.5watt hour battery vs the 25watt hour of the iconia w-500.

Please find me a mainstream use case for such a tablet which is not doable on ARM, while being better on a tablet than just using a laptop/desktop with even more powerful hardware inside.

What is this BS ? Why do I need to find things that fit into your use case.

How about this one. I go on vacation and instead of bringing a huge laptop with me + a tablet I decide to take a windows convertiable product with me. So while I'm in bed or pool side ican watch movies / surf the net play simple games .

Then when I want to edit video I took during the day or play a more hardcore game I put it into the dock and there we go.

For an ipad to do the same you'd need an ipad and then you'd need a mac book. So your looking at what $500 + $1000 = $1,500 minimum

For me depending on what i choose to spend i could be looking at as little as $500 .

Yes I'm sure editing my video on my fx 8150 with 16 gigs of ram would be much faster. I'm sure photo shop would be the same. heck even on a $1,000 laptop i could most likely have a faster experiance.

The same on surfing in bed , the ipad might offer a better use case there. Mabye

But if you put everything together the convertiable would be a much better device because it would do all the tasks I need while reducing the amount of items i need to bring with me and the weight of what i'm bringing .
