I don't want this. With all the new stuff they're trying I don't want go back to choosing from mouse and keyboard or mouse and keyboard.
it won't be a flop. Vista was a "flop" and it sold 350 million or something. And after Windows 8 is Windows 9 which will still use the Metro interface.

fyi, for comparison, apple just announced at their conference that they had sold 365 million iOS devices. And that is since 2007.

Youtube pauses if you task away from it in Metro browsers. Well, that's some bullshit. One big blight so far.
yea is that a metro thing? if so then i really see no reason to use the metro browser. how does is the music app able to run in the background but not metro?

Web sites can be anything. They can be processor hogging flash advertisements. They can be HTML5-rich games. Suspending Metro IE is the only thing that makes sense to preserve the entire multitasking system of Windows 8.

If you want to play youtube video in the background, there will inevitably be a youtube app that's background-enabled, much like the music app. Right now simply allowing anything in the browser to continue running in the background is a terrible idea.

Agreed. I would hate to play the "Which tab is making sound?!" game on my tablet.

Just out of curiosity, does mostly everyone here use Chrome over the other browsers as their main one?
Yep. Although if IE10 had better extension support i might switch to that, it seems on par nowadays.

Tested IE 10 standards for RP.

In comparison, Chrome 19 scores 402 + 13 bonus points for HTML5 and 100/100 Acid 3.

I will say though the way how some of the scores are measured in that html5 test is a bit flawed. For instance, why is there a 20 point score for accessing the webcam?

Yep. I've been trying the metro chrome out for the past couple days, but am going back to the desktop. Too many limitations on the Metro client, though it looks nicer.

IE has come an incredibly long way with Metro 10, though. It's definitely as fast as chrome, but I am too tied into the Google services at this point to make it my main windows browser.

That's an interesting opinion you have. Thought I have it say, I find it a bit hilarious that you recommend to run a second app in the background in order to save resources, instead of just letting IE play the audio/video in the background.

You don't see anything wrong with that?

I would assume it's because Youtube isn't the only thing Flash is used for? A dedicated Youtube app is only doing 1 thing.

Who said anything about flash? Maybe if Microsoft would properly push HTML5, like they wanted to, Google would have more than 3 interns working on the YouTube HTML5 player.

I'm installing the RC onto a blank Win7 updated install, it seems like it goes through a few reboots and takes a good 45mins in the install process then right as I think it's done it crashes and reverts back to Win 7. Done this twice now :'(

Yes, much better. I didn't think about that. Thanks.

Now, I can't remember it exactly and I can't check it right now, but does the YouTube video keep playing when you switch tabs?

Looks disgusting (maybe it's still not final).

I'm not against the Metro design, but shoehorning it into the current Windows appearance is obviously not the way to go.
Yes, this isn't Metro at all IMO. Metro is a UI in itself, not just a simplified form of an existing interface.

The new format comes with lower power usage. So i'd take the new design over the old one.

The new desktop skin now looks properly fugly. At this rate I hope it retains the Windows Classic skin, but with my dual 23" display setup at home I have grown rather fond of Aero.

I don't give two shits about power consumption on my desktop.

it will be interesting to see how they handle services like spotify. x86 tablets will be a portable device and are still capable of using spotify the normal way without having to buiy premium

but don't act like someone is making you use windows.

Don't project your situation on other people. You may not be forced to use and adapt to it. I am forced to use it, I am forced to make sure my applications work with it. Windows versions that aren't heavily migrated to make my life more difficult and cost me money. I have two new platforms to test for, a new logo program to submit my apps to. I have a lot invested in the platform, if I was just playing with it I might have a different outlook. I actually like Windows a lot, but I'm not in a situation like you to pick a winner overall and just use that. I have to keep up with Linux for my servers (Linux for a desktop is a complete joke). I have to keep up with OS X for my OS X apps. I have to keep up with Windows for my Windows apps. Windows is by far my biggest platform, and a lot of that has to do with Microsoft's history of incredible developer support. Support that they have dropped the ball on recently, so yes I will complain about it, as have other vendors.

Highly doubtful. The only potentially power-hungry effect they removed was the glass and you can already do that without butchering the rest of the interface.

That was just a bunch of BS by Thurrot. Disable glass on your laptop and see how much longer the battery lasts. The UI elements should be simplified, and be made to be more Metro-ish, especially to fit Microsoft's goal of a unified OS approach. I don't like the current look at all, hopefully whatever they do is simply skinning the existing metrics so I don't have to go through and recheck every dialog. I think the leaks would look just fine with the Hot Dog Stand theme.

No, why would I? A metro-style app specifically devoted to playing YouTube videos could easily sneak in with a minimal footprint, and minimal CPU usage.

Right now, a single Chrome window with 3 tabs and a modest number of plugins is taking up ~350MB of ram. And that's without any video or audio playing back.

Who said anything about flash? Maybe if Microsoft would properly push HTML5, like they wanted to, Google would have more than 3 interns working on the YouTube HTML5 player.
It doesn't matter if it's HTML5, Flash, or something else running in that background IE instance. It can be anything. It doesn't have to be video.

I am liking the blog postings. Even if i do not agree with every change they have made for windows 8, i appreciate the fact that the blog postings at least attempt to explain the rationale behind their design processes for Windows 8.

That said, Mail does look pretty good to me.

Tired of losing ground to the iPad, Microsoft is poised to serve up its own entry in the suddenly booming tablet market.

After signaling for months that it would attack the market only through its traditional hardware partners, Microsoft has decided to enter the tablet business more directly.

The company isn’t talking about its effort, but Microsoft has scheduled an event Monday in Los Angeles where it has promised a “major” announcement. AllThingsD reported earlier on Thursday that the event would center around its tablet strategy.

Sources say that Microsoft concluded that it needs its own tablet, with the company designing both the hardware and software in an effort to better compete against Apple’s strengths. Microsoft’s tablets may include machines running ARM-based processors as well as models running on traditional PC processors, sources said.

Online site The Wrap reported this evening that Microsoft will manufacture its own devices, something which AllThingsD sources have also heard in recent weeks.

The move could allow Microsoft to better match Apple’s tight integration, but is also fraught with the potential for conflict. Microsoft makes most of its money from Windows and Office and depends on an ecosystem of PC makers like Dell, HP, Acer and Lenovo to make those Windows-based machines.

That could explain the ridiculous Windows RT license fee.

Lack of IMAP support (for the time being; I did read some of the article) has kept Mail off this test machine.

In general, I find the less I use Metro (including the splitscreen crap), the more I like Windows 8, mainly for the desktop improvements (+ a notification system). I think I only have two Metro apps installed (News and Sports).

flashbacks of the Courier

Don't you dare...

Maybe they were unsatisfied by the tablets being made by some of the manufacturers. I've heard from my friends at REDACTED that some of them really suck, especially the Fujitsu ones.

interesting. If they have a microsoft x86 tablet then that might be my device of the future. Those Acer/Asus tablets look good though too.
