anyone know if contacts in the 'people' app can be filtered? i don't really need all my twitter contacts showing up etc.
maybe i'm thinking of my wp7 phone & twitter contacts should be there for usability purposes but at the moment it just seems messy & unnecessary. also, any idea how to combine/aggregate duplicate contacts?

I'll miss the windows 7 start button and bar. I'm ecstatic that there is a simpler operating system for windows, but I rather stick with what I have.

Weird how people have gotten so attached to that really terrible old ass Start menu.

I don't even care that much anymore and just want the universal search back.

e: This is how I see the Windows Vista/7 start menu

And that's all I care about.

Wait universal search is gone? I thought just typing from the start screen will still do that.

It does, but now it filters and separates automatically by programs, files and settings and only searches for apps by default.

Say you want to launch Windows Update.

In Windows 7, all I have to to is press the Windows key, type "upd" and press enter.
In Windows 8, I press the Windows key, type "upd" and get 0 results, because Windows Update is not categorized as an app, but as an utility under settings. So I'd have to click on settings and then click on Windows Update or press Windows key + W, so it searches immediately for settings and utilities and ignores the apps and files. It's not really that annoying but inconvenient for no reason and you don't even get the option to turn the filter off.

Ugh, that doesn't sound appealing. Let me guess, I can no longer pull up start and type 'cmd' anymore because of this change right? I do that so often at work.

no you still can. command prompt would fall under an app.

app search - default (win+typing or win+q+typing)
settings search - (win+typing and select settings or win+w+typing)
file search - (win+typing and select files or win+f+typing)

and then of course you can search within any metro application by win+typing and selecting it in the bar. Oh and no need to hit the windows key if you are already on the start screen, just start typing.

edit: and there is the search charm which you can bring up as well (looks like some keyboards will have those charm keys on them btw).

No, cmd works fine, because it's an "app".

Like it said, it's not that big of an annoyance, but because I don't use it very often, I forget about the extra shortcut to search specifically for settings. Just inconvenient for no reason.

Ah, ok, I see how it works now. Man I should just install the latest Windows 8 here on this new computer I just got to educate myself more on what's going on with the Start Menu. Thanks for the clarification. Ya it doesn't seem as bad as I feared, but I can understand it being inconvenient.

Why don't you try installing the release preview? It seems like a lot of your complaints are about how you think the OS works instead of how it actually does.

EDIT - Ah cool :)

The filters are a huge inconvenience and I hope someone creates a tweak to not have it filter by apps on default. I don't want to press win+whatever I just want to type and press enter :$

The worst thing about this is the "flickering" of the screen when you press the Windows key cause it is switching to metro for the moment you are searching your app/program. On Win7 you are not disrupted by anything like that cause only the start menu pops up in the bottom left. It's barely 10% of the screen for me that way.

just FYI you can launch Windows Update as an "app" too by using "wuapp".
Thanks for the tip, but I have no idea how I would've ever found this had you not posted it considering it won't even show up under apps until you've typed out the entire thing..

Main issue I've been having with Windows 8 is that it's not saving mapped drives when I turn the machine off -- it's saving one of them, but not the rest. Any idea why this is happening (outside of "It's in beta")?

I assumed you knew, sorry.

The curse of being kinda at the source.

On which part of 8 are you working on, so I can avoid asking you stupid questions again.

It's the exact same as every other question you've asked me - I don't know, if I knew I probably shouldn't tell you exactly why, but there was probably a good reason for it, and I doubt it'll be changed at this point. It's a minor inconvenience for something you barely ever use, and I've provided you with a tip you can use to speed things up from time to time anyway.

And no, I'm not telling you what I work on. If you're this annoying about stuff I literally can't answer, I can't imagine what you'd be like for something I can answer!

Good point!

The tip is useful, but I'll have to find a list with more shortcuts like that. Like rozay said, if you didn't mention it, I would have no idea that was possible.

Have they put the orb back yet?

I can't agree with this. In both Windows 7 and 8, I commonly open an app or search for a file or setting by just hitting start and typing it in.

Thanks for the tip though.

Are you referring to windows update specifically or the search segmentation? I'm having trouble thinking what kind of "good reason" would exist for taking extra clicks/keyboard shortcuts to find files aside from protecting casual users from getting overwhelmed by search results (which is funny because it worked fine on 7 and 8's metro search has much better organization for large amounts of files). There have been so many times I've just typed and had nothing show up, only to remember afterwards to click/keyboard a filter. That isn't efficient at all, and I truly miss that from windows 7.

I don't agree with that last bit, the latest ARM processors wouldn't have any trouble with it.

I'm not sure they want to be limited to the latest ARM processors.

Win8 has lots of places where it has been dumbed down for tablets/touch compared to Win7.

For some reason the Xbox 360 doesn't automatically pick up on my W8 PC (for like streaming videos and stuff). Any ideas why?

I'll reword my statement then-WinRT seems to be lean enough that it shouldn't have issues with full searching on flash memory or an SSD.
