The select gesture is kinda interesting. Simple swipe down on an object.

Seems like they're going to finally bring Albums to their proper glory too.

I tried doing this:

nPuX0.jpg

It was an awesome idea, but it didn't work out as I had hoped. I posted in the mobile thread to suggest a fix that would allow GAF to be constantly visible while using other apps.

For those that use/are familiar with the MetroTwit desktop client, they now have a preview version up in the Win Store.

Features are lacking at this point, but layout and performance are very good.

you can change the user-agent in IE so m.neogaf.com can be used on the desktop (I think this is ok now it's a real site and it has ads)

go to: http://m.neogaf.com
Press F12
Tools > change user agent > custom
in the "Friendly name" box just put anything
in the "User Agent String" box you need to use a ua for a mobile browser like the iPhone or something. IE9 on WP7 is

Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows Phone OS 7.5; Trident/5.0; IEMobile/9.0)

Press Set
Make sure it's set by going to Tools > change user agent > [make sure the ua you just set is selected]

you have to manually select it every time.

Hey guys, so is there official confirmation that the desktop is 'legacy' and going to be depreceated and removed with the future being WinRT only? Or is that just speculation?

Speculation. I don't see it going away for a long time, as Microsoft know themselves that currently not all applications are possible in Metro and not all use cases can be satisfied by Metro. There has to be a Windows SKU with the desktop.

Yeah if it's speculation then it's bullshit. Why the hell would MS kill the only OS form that they dominate? OSX and Linux are still around after all and the Office and Visual Studios cashcows are *much* better suited to desktop than tablet.

You wont have to worry about the desktop going away, it will be used less and less though as WinRT becomes more developed and computing becomes even more mobile. I'd give it 10 years till businesses are really using WinRT for their business applications though. Virtualization will be used for Win32 applications most likely in the future though.

Anyway, Microsoft is not going to admit that the desktop is legacy.

Is there a way to add something like "scan with windows defender" to the right click context menu?

(i'm still on the consumer preview because it's literally been rock solid and I don't want to give that up)

Anyone notice the System Reserved partition on new installs is now 350 MB as opposed to the traditional 100 MB from Windows Vista/7?

Live tile of the Store says I have 2 updates for apps, I open the store and it says in the top right corner that I have 2 updates. When I click on it, it says I don't have any updates.

Close and restarted the app, restarted the computer, and the issue still remains.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Happens to me too. Just a bug, I think.

On another note, has anyone tried Fresh Paint? How freakin' cool is this app?

$40 is a great price, but I never buy upgrade licenses. Will need to see how much the full version is.

Also, why until Jan 13? Make it forever!

Wonder what the regular price will be if Pro is $40.

Won't be surprised if the non-pro version is more.

Usually you just needed the old disc didn't you? It wasn't a big hassle

No, that was Win95/98/ME/2K.

Now it just checks the OS ID, but since Vista, you can do complete installs from upgrade CDs.

I'm just now moving a couple of systems to Win7. Not sure if I'll move to Windows8 if it doesn't come with the device itself.

Reading the announcement again, I think Microsoft intends that you can only use the downloadable upgrade installer to get Windows 8 Pro for $40.

Oh nvm. ISOs allowed.

$40 to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro! Pretty sweet. Will run from release to January 31st, 2013. Available in 131 markets.

Edit: Windows Media Center can be added for free as well in the promotion. Also $69 for packaged disc version.
someone make a thread for this. At that price, upgrading my main computer is a no brainer

You need the existing OS installed and activated as far as I'm aware. That's why I always bought full--so I could install it directly onto a clean hard drive without any hassles.

So if I wanted to do reinstalls, I'd need Win 7 installed then upgrade? That kinda sucks

I don't think that's the case. It wasn't with windows 7 anyway, so long as you downloaded or got ahold of a full windows 7 install disk which has multiple legal links on the web.

Also, there is now a factory reset option in Windows 8. So if you just want a clean system without changing hard disk or anything, that's very convenient.

That is pretty cool.

Maybe I'll even buy it this time
instead of using the MSDN license :P
.
yeah i recently got a MSDN account for class, does microsoft usually release a new Windows to it at RTM? I will probably have this till the end of the year so i hope they put it up there before then.

They had W7 up at least a month before it officially released.

The RTM is usually on MSDN before it's officially released. With MSDNAA/DreamSpark it depends on the admin who's managing it (MSDN != MSDNAA). Some are quicker than others. On that note, my MSDNAA account still works and it's been almost 4 years. Pretty funny.

oh yeah meant Dreamspark.

You can do a clean install on a blank hdd with an upgrade disc. I've done it twice now.

i want to give win8 another shot, but i do not have a partition or another hard drive. is there a way to upgrade with it and safely downgrade? if not, is there a way to clone my hard drive and then restore it on top of win8 like you can do with os x?

All you have to do to make a partition is go into disk management, shrink C, and partition a new volume off of the space you shrunk off. Google it.

i'm aware how to do it, but i already fucked something up with my disk management where a partition is showing up as 800gb

Look up how to install and boot from a VHD. Requires a bit of technical know-how, but not too bad. It's what I've used before and it's pretty rad.

There's no way to do an upgrade and a downgrade though.

Though, since it sounds like you've been having troubles, be sure to make a backup and just wait until the final release to try it if you don't want to risk having to format in case something gets screwed up.
