Windu, you seem to know what's up! I have a question for you...

People were saying yesterday that you can't publish free WinRT apps (all apps start at $1.49) but I see tiles for "Top Free" apps in market place. Am I missing something?

The ability to snap Metro apps to the left/right hand side of the screen is really great. Especially for Twitter apps and the like.

Yeah, and there's a lot of potential there for productivity apps... A capture app which could open all kind of files, browse the web, take screengrabs of portions of the screen, even videos etc would be awesome place sided with one note mx for instance.

I can't wait to see how developers will leverage this potential into awesome apps...

Microsoft has the worst accounts system thing ive ever seen.... kinda thing you went sorted out if you want accounts tied to systems....

Its like they have to half ass everything...

Haha, they put uber douche on the store front page.

Srsly though.

I got a new outlook.com account, and its set to GB for some reason, I need to set it to Australia... for xbox shit on windows 8... but I dont know where or how. The xbox site it sends me to has the set up that makes no sense. And the 'advice' it gives me is to set my system to GB....

How about a unified MICROSOFT account? That too much trouble? Live? outlook? Xbox? Fucking hell. Talk about messed up. 15 years of failed online shit all over the place...

I have an unified account for all that stuff, dunno why you make it so complicated.

Ok, so how do I change my region for my outlook account?

Is there a reason this guy and a lime green laptop are so popular with microsoft >_<?

try going to https://account.live.com and then clicking edit personal info and changing the country under that. Or maybe billing.

you can also access that page (account settings) by clicking on your user name in the top right of outlook.com, skydrive.com etc..

also, those accounts should all be the same one...they are all microsoft accounts. i hope you weren't dumb enough to use different accounts for all of those different services. (i use my hotmail account for everything)

Didnt work. Still says I am British in the xbox stuff >_<

I did use my hotmail for everything, but they said it was a US account and they couldnt change it.... Because I bought one game on gfwl....

maybe it just takes awhile for it to go through, but other than that i don't know what to do. Contact Customer Support I guess.

I don't think you can change the region on your Live account.
i think i remember reading or hearing about that being changed with this new refresh of their services. maybe its not implemented yet. I'd just change your country under your personal info on the account page and wait and see.

Let's hope so. When I was creating my account Live wasn't available in Poland (and thus GfWL games had no online), so I had to set it up on GB. Apparently, when Microsoft finally started the service in Poland, there was a period of time when you could change the region. The option is blocked now so I'm stuck with Great Britain as my region. :/

Went ahead and got the RTM off Technet, my machine was overdue a reformat and I didn't see any reason not to install it. I don't hate it? I wasn't really following the development of it closely and mostly got impressions from others who were paying a bit more attention, but the Modern UI/Metro stuff isn't absolutely godawful, but it does seem like unnecessary change.

You'll get used to it like the rest of us.

Its great on tablets. But its not good on pcs >.< thats my main problem, they are trying to 'hoist' metro onto everyone when it really only fits with the tablet market.

My problem is they went with 'one size fits all' when it doesnt, they could have tweaked both the tablet and desktop versions to make them better for their own environments imo.

I like windows 8 on my tablet, except the legacy desktop stuff that hasnt been made finger friendly. And I like the improvements made to windows 8 desktop wise, except that lots of the stuff is made with tablets in mind >.>

I probably will get it though, the improvements made to windows under the good outweigh the drawbacks, not to mention the cheap price which is nice.

Oh you! If you were a puppy, I'd pick you up and give you a big hug to hopefully break down that stubborn dogmatic ideology you cling so hard to. Windows 8 is good and when people stop trying to use it in ways that defies means then they'll begin to understand the elegance of the system. Also, you as a Windows should be aware that the OS is really an ecosystem that evolves over time in that not only does the software evolve but you as user evolve as well. This MS is giving me something I don't want on my desktop is crazy you little puppy!

Please don't flame me. I actually see you as a big hairy sweaty bear who can do really strange things to me in a woodshed that I probably wouldn't like while demanding I yell Metro sucks :(

I happen to love Win 8 on traditional mouse and keyboard. You have your normal desktop, and then the click of the Windows key on the keyboard and BOOM: Shiny App World. Toggle back and forth.. it's fun!

It's funny... that Windows key on keyboards for the last 15 years has felt meaningless for me... until now :P

Also as someone who has the PC hooked up to a 50" Plasma, Metro is an ideal interface... preferable to the desktop. Even if it's something as small as launching Minecraft, I'd rather do that from Metro than double click on a desktop icon.

I dunno, I just think of it as a different start button. At least you can see the things on your start button clearly now.

I want this on my media pc I think, windows button from the plex interface if I have to do other stuff works way better than desktop icons.

Currently I'm loving the performance of it, but I am wondering: Is there a way to make sure what I open will open in desktop?

For example when I go check for Windows Updates it wants to stay in the Metro UI, is there a way to make sure I can just launch it(and subsequently anything else) into the desktop?

Go to control panel, find windows update, right click on it and pin to start.

Depends on the options, some are metro only, but windows update is still a standalone too, just uses metro skin to make it easier.

After seeing that benchmark and watching this I am now convinced. I won't be adopting Windows 8. And I definitely will be advising the less tech-savvy people in my family to stay away from this. Mostly because I really don't want to spend the first 3 to 6 months after Win8 comes out teaching people how to use it all over again. It was hard enough to teach them Windows the first time around.

Even for myself, the benchmarks for 8 are only marginally better at best and it's just not worth the hassle of relearning how to operate the system just for the hell of it.

Come again? Is there an option in default programs?:

Ah, I figured that might have been the only way.
Well it might be the fresh install but currently Windows 8 does seem to be performing better for me than Windows 7 specifically one thing I've noticed is that 1080p videos on youtube and vimeo aren't having any framedrops outside of when I start playing them.

I just watched the video.. WTF did they do to Windows start menu... I usually have 20 to 50 tabs open due to my research... This would kill it. Also they need Tiles as folders....

goddamn that video was horrible
Cannot argue with the truth though.

I just put in the order for a new PC and I was kind of on the fence, whether to install an MSDN version of Win8 on it from the get go.

But considering the way things are moving, I will stick to 7 for at least another 8 months.

well those guys had no idea what they were doing so yeah.

I thought that boot up times and stuff would be quicker with windows 8, but abit more >.>

They need to do file transfers and things though.

If you look around that channel you'll see these guys are actually pretty well informed and thorough.

However, by all means this video is supposed to be an example of what a regular user will stumble into the first time he boots up into Windows 8. Sure, there are tricks and stuff they have not yet learned about, but that's kind of the point.

being able to see the "Settings" tab that is staring you right in the face when searching for something and complaining that you have to go to the control panel to search for a setting is just idiotic. I closed the video after that, but i'm sure there were some more complaints like that.

Not really. Closing a window like they did is really not the way to do it.
Also alt-f4.

Actually, their complaint is that in Windows 7, the setting could be accessed by searching from the start menu, now you have to go to the control panel and then search. Thus increasing the steps needed to find that element and decreasing the usability of the start menu search function.
