Jez Cordez from Windows Central Reports that "Starfield's launch date isn't yet set in stone. Speaking to us on condition of anonymity, trusted sources have told us that Starfield is now playable in full from start to finish"

What you need to know

  • Starfield is an upcoming space RPG from Microsoft and Bethesda Softworks.
  • Made by the team behind Fallout 4 and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Starfield is likely going to be a major game for Xbox later this year.
  • Microsoft has officially stated that the game is targeting the first half of 2023 for launch.
  • A store page on CDKeys features a launch listing of March 23, 2023, but we have it on good authority that this is merely a placeholder date.

With the latest Xbox Developer_Direct out of the door, fans are already looking ahead to the next one, widely expected to feature Starfield.

Xbox's debut Developer_Direct was a big hit, featuring games like Redfall and Minecraft Legends, with a surprise drop of Hi-Fi Rush launching straight into Xbox Game Pass after the show. Hi-Fi Rush has since found itself riding high on Steam sales charges and Twitch viewership stats, kickstarting what should be a pretty impressive year for the Xbox platform.

Still, Xbox fans are chomping at the bit for information on the main event of upcoming Xbox games: Starfield, by Bethesda Softworks, and Todd Howard of Elder Scrolls fame. To that end, a recent store listing has fans wondering if the game could be launching sooner, rather than later, leading to dozens of DMs landing in my inbox.

Being a Bethesda game that doesn't mean much...
Skyrim ps3 was also technically playable from start to finish at launch.

Yeah, people with short memmory aways downplay this every time.

Being playable doesn't mean it's not full of bugs, broken, terrible perfomance, etc. They are probably trying to figure out the perfomance part.

Yeah, a game from another dev being playable means about 6 months - 1 year of optimization before release.
A Bethesda game being playable means 1 year of optimizations, release in alpha or pre alpha state, then another year of patches to make it acceptable and leave the rest for fans to fix via unofficial patches/mods.

I think we all know how this will unfold:

Redfall May 2023
Forza September 2023
Starfield November 2023

Microsoft won't skip their big holiday season title to release something in June, especially when the developer will need all the time it can get to iron out the huge amount of bugs this kind of games always have.

They released a console with no major first party title. They were liable to do anything. I agree with you on what the dates should be. That's the smartest option.

This release window seems 100% reasonable, and plausible.

They won't delay it this year. It'll release for sure. Can't say what state it'll be in. No way they cancel this year though. Starfield will see the light of day in 2023. That's a guarantee

I am interested if ms engineers which are helping since its an exclusive, and todd said in the last interview they are godsent of a help as director. That how it will be different from other bethesda releases. Im fairly positive it will not as buggy as a bethesda multi platform release. Bu he said now more than once that there is a huge pressure on him from ms that Starfield should be a system seller.

So i hope Ms is smart enough to give the devs the time they need. Sony is great at this. Starfield buggy in summer or not so much in winter. We will see.

Ps 3 was hard for every dev, dlcs took ages to hit on ps3.

Looks good now.

Hmmm, sounds like it won’t arrive in the summer. I wonder if they’re feeling too much pressure, it’s the first real AAA next gen exclusive release and a supposed system seller, might feel like too much is riding on this release.

I just want Skyrim in space, they don’t need to reinvent the wheel and I don’t need it to stomp on Elden Ring or anything like that, I think the real magic will happen through mods.

Starfield not having a date currently is good for me.
I can upgrade my PC slowly, so that I will have best experience when it launches.
This.

I'm currently planning to make the jump to AM5 (ideally a R9 7950X3D, along with a new motherboard, DDR5 RAM and 2TB ultra-fast NVMe storage), a very expensive endeavor especially here in Latin America; so I'll gladly take any extra time they give me to save the most money possible for it.

I think one way microsoft can get out ahead of stuff like this before showcases is simply to announce they are delayed before they are shown. If microsoft came out a week before the developer direct and just said “our team at turn 10 needs more time to make the best game they can, and thus we’ve decided its best to move our release window outside of the first half of the year” it would have saved alot of frustration. People would have had a week to be angry, then when the game was shown people would have gotten more out of the forza details that were announced because they wouldn't have been expecting a release date. If starfield is indeed delayed to this holiday, then they need to announce that before its next showcase, so that folks can properly manage their expectations, and enjoy the presentation for what it is. Many of the neat features announced for forza were overshadowed by the release date controversy. Transparency would go a long way

I don’t believe in release dates it’s interesting they have deadlines still but here’s a game coming and we’re responsible to buy and play it. Give everyone a demo or trailer and position your game for years success would be my approach.

While what you speak is true, I don't know if there is much we can take away from that particular scenario that occurred 12 years ago. There were also 2 other versions of the game that released that did not have the issues the PS3 had.

Is it possible that Srarfield is a broken mess.... yes, but I wouldn't go as far to say it's probable.

Ask Sega. They did it with the Saturn.
They also pissed off all but a few retailers nationwide. Some retailers went as far as never carrying the Saturn due to the stunt. It's a risky proposition and if you let too many people in on the secret, it will probably leak.
