And hey, I can make this post even longer. How about Safari in iOS5 being faster than IE9 on Microsoft's own HTML5 test site?

ios5html5.jpg

IE9 had something like 28 FPS when they tested it at MIX11. It will be interesting to see how both final versions will perform.
3FPS isn't a huge difference. Especially since ios5 is running on (much) superior hardware.

Microsoft just hasn't marketed WP7 well. Its advertised the platform, but not what it does or its advantages. Bing has been better marketed.

Sure, the difference isn't big, but it's one thing less Microsoft can boast about at the launch conference. ;)

And if you want to see how the retail situation really is, read this article. AT&T doesn't suck as much as the rest, sure, but they're not good either.

At AT&T, the salesperson was a recent iPhone to Android convert. She was enthusiastic about WP7 devices, saying that Netflix was on WP7 and not available on her Android, and looked embarrassed when she walked me over to AT&T's unkempt WP7 display shelf. The newest WP7 phone, the HTC HD7S, didn't have a demo device. The only live demo I saw was an LG Quantum with a damaged screen (below right).

Next at a T-Mobile kiosk, the only WP7 device on display was an HTC HD7. The salesperson said the WP7 platform was well-regarded by techies, but that he couldn't personally recommend it as he carried an Android device. He was obviously more knowledgeable about the Android platform, and eventually the session turned into an iOS-bashing fest.

At a Verizon reseller kiosk, a salesman clearly tried to deter me from buying a WP7 device altogether. Not only did not he appear to know the fundamental difference between Windows Mobile and WP7, his kiosk didn't even offer WP7 devices and said you'd only find WP7 demo products at a few of Verizon's big retail stores.

"Honestly, only 1 out of 500 customers comes in here asking for a Windows phone," he said. "Verizon won't roll them out to kiosks until it performs better on the market."

At Sprint, a salesperson was impressed by my insistence on trying a WP7 device (Sprint has only on Windows Phone 7 model, the HTC Arrive), but still tried to sell me the Android-powered HTC Evo (like the one he held). When I told him I'd rather wait for another WP7 phone to hit Sprint, he tried to convince me to return on June 24 for the HTC Evo 3D.

Although he said he liked the WP7 platform, he told me, "We sell what people want. There hasn't been much demand, but I think it's growing. Just yesterday somebody came in looking for this phone."

So i took my Trophy to work last night after a full days first charge, and around lunch time i got the message that the battery level was very low. WTH! I only showed it to a friend, and we watched a few NBA highlights on Youtube. Is mine defective? I may need to buy a better battery.

ATT is semi trying, but the final line from the Verizon and Sprint reps are the truth. They aren't going to give shelf space and mind share to a product that no one is buying. Its like the PSP in the US, dwindling shelf space and clerks dont care about it. I would assume MS can push some large kiosks and advertising requirements (with the requisite amounts of money) once mango and its related phones launch as a sort of relaunch. Hopefully that's their plan

I had the same problem.. I had to let mine drain all the way to dead.. then once I charged it full again my battery life was great.

I'm loving my Focus. I added the 16gb Sandisk microSD card weeks ago and have had zero problems with it. On another note, I'm on vacation with my family, which includes 4 iPhone users and they all love WP7 after seeing it in action and getting a chance to try it out. Microsoft definitely needs to roll out a huge marketing push once Mango comes out.

Totally, most people are completely ignorant regarding the device.

I just read and watched WP Central's hands on with Mango and it looks great. I can't wait to get it on my Focus.

As the OS gets on more people's hands (and with new hardware in the fall) the momentum should pick up. It's a breath of fresh air for anyone who has used iPhone/Android for an extended amount of time. I really think it's only a matter of time before the OS takes off, everyone seems to love it once they try it, and slowly more people are trying it. I saw more of these phones in the wild recently than I'd seen all year long. I saw an ambulance driver, an education director, and a random person this past week alone, and I would sometimes go months without seeing one in the wild. All were Focus' by the way.

I have gone to verizon stores and ask for WP7 phone to check out the interface and stuff, and they don't even have one setup for it, just running some features video.
So is hard to decide whether to make the jump for my next phone or not, i like a lot of what I see but I want to try it out

One of my biggest peeves about wp7 is still the lack of bing/zune features outside the US. I hope they work on whatever needs to be done (licensing, etc) to support those.

It's annoying cuz I think it's actually just based on the country you set for your live account, except I really don't want to switch away from the email that I'm currently using just to get these features.

Try it in an AT&T store. The OS is the same on every device.

i like what i read in this article. but im not sure if i like them getting rid of context sensitive search

Agreed. However, I can understand why they would do this. I've had about 6 people I know get the Windows Phone, and they've all called the Search button the Bing button and didn't really realize that you use it for searching in apps. It made sense once I told them, but it wasn't obvious to them at first. Making it point to only Bing really does make it the Bing button, which is what everyone thinks it is anyways. I guess it won't be too hard to just hit the on-screen search button instead.

Mango looks absolutely fantastic overall. Great polish in every area, and tons of great new features.

Oh, and as a reminder Plants vs Zombies comes out tomorrow, and Angry Birds the week after! Great two weeks of games, and about time they're on WP7.

I will, it just seems Verizon ones are easier available when I have gone out. Not even the best buy mobile seemed to have one.

Noob question but why do phones, even the ones with the Snapdragon CPU with half a gig RAM, render/load pages on Wifi slower than laptop/PC's?

Because even a one gig snapdragon doesn't have half the processing power of your laptop. Use the mobile site when available. Even with the same speed I'd still prefer a mobile site on my phone.

Actually.... that was running on a pre-Mango build apparently. The current Mango build on a Samsung dev phone currently hits 10FPS faster than the newest iPhone running a much more powerful processor

The best "overview" of the new features I've read is the pocketnow one.... they seemed to be one of the new that took a look at the turn by turn nav and some of the other hidden things (which hopefully the nav will be fixed when it actually launches... not a fan at all of the touch method currently being used to do turn by turn)

I have noticed this too.... I initially converted some of my friends and family that were looking at new phones but recently I have started to see random people with them. Hopefully nokia will accelerate that too with standout phones for the platform and not android knockoffs seen from the other oem's.

Hey brotkasten:

One of the big problems with not having an html5 browser is all those mobile sites that are set up for iOS won't display the video on our current WP7. Does the Mango emulator have the capability where the video shows up inline like on iOS and you can play it right off the page? I think that's html5, right?

The iPhone is still pushing 60% more pixels in doing that FPS test. 960x640 is a lot more pixels to push than 800x480. A better comparison would be with the 3GS. The reason the 3GS scores better than iPhone 4 in FPS tests is because of the lower number of pixels that need to be pushed.

The iPhone 4 must have a crappier processor than the 3GS!

Youtube's HTML5 mobile site was probably the first thing I tried when I installed the 7.1 SDK. Sadly, it doesn't work in this version. However, Joe Belfiore demonstrated the HTML5 video tag at MIX11, so it's definitely in.

It plays the video, but not in the website, like youtube videos do on iOS.

Bwahaha, this is so embarrassing. My mind was blown when I found out few weeks ago that you could use the search button in the people hub or the phone tile. Now you can search e-mails, too? :lol

Seriously, Iced_Eagle is so right. The search button was always the Bing button to me.

So my phone fell (T-Mobile HD7) and the screen cracked pretty bad. it's still useable but man, this sucks. I have the insurance but they want 130 dollars for a new phone. Is that the cheapest option generally for fixing this?

yea email search is probably my most frequently used contextual search.. I guess there s a dedicated search button now in email (mango)

Mango doesn't add public transit routes for Maps? fail

oh, and remember when some poster was complaining that the press wasn't paying attention to Mango but poring all over iOS5. Yeah, this media deluge is working out nicely now
i was a naysayer :/

Comparing benchmark results on non final software is useless. Let's wait till they both ship. In the meantime, we should applaud both companies for advancing web standards.

What the hell is the point of insurance if you have to pay $130 for a new phone?

I'd assume you could get a HD7 on ebay or craigslist for around $200.

That was me!

I'm going back to IOS or android phone when my 1 year contract is up. Now with the security patch firmware, my calls are getting hanged (before call pickup).

Sigh~~~~~~~

WP7-Dev-GAF:
At the moment I'm developing just for fun but I'm thinking about a registration at the App Hub. Maybe some of my abominations are worth a sale ;)

Outside the US you have to fill out several documents for taxes and register a own business (which will create costs from about ~100 - 200 bucks). I don't want to go through all this procedure without even knowing if its worth the effort.
Can I register to the App Hub and sell my applications without getting paid out? So the payments are saved in my account and I can decide later if I want to go through all the bureaucracy stuff?

Isn't there an option to register as an individual? I'm in Australia and I've been able to get up to the last step (final payment).

After almost two weeks of usage now, I love my WP7. It's slick, fast and the OS is just beautiful. Seeing what is coming with Mango just makes me even more happier. (It does fix the color-depth, right??)

Yes.
It was stated at MIX11 that the color depth issue on HTC devices will be corrected with the release of Mango later this year.
That is a performance issue with Silverlight 3, iirc and was fixed in Silverlight 4, which comes with Mango.

Plants vs. Zombies is out for a reasonable 5 dollars (I was expecting 7). GET IT NOW!

To be honest I find myself buying more games than I did on my iPhone, hopefully this applies to more than just me because voting with our wallets is the surefire way to make WP7 successful.

It's an issue with your hardware/software combo. Why not call your carrier or the manufacturer and get it fixed? You don't think you can run into a lemon on iOS or Android?

It'll be interesting to see how much carriers are going push next patch of mango phones now that MS owns Skype..
From my understanding they don't like it very much.. hopefully MS can mitigate their fears about it..
