I'm considering upgrading to a WP7 phone. I just personally like the OS better than Apple's, but I'm curious how people enjoy it. My time with it has been somewhat limited.

I have been an iPhone user user since day 1 and was interested in WP7, so I got one through work. My thoughts are as follows:

Good:
The core experience of the phone, out of the box, is superb. Microsoft really hit on the right direction to take I think—instead of aping the iPhone they went in a different directions. The UI is great and as responsive on the iPhone (at least with the core OS and apps, more on this below). GUI responsiveness is the first thing I assess on any mobile device and they hit it out of the park with these phones.

Not so Good:
This goes without saying but the app situation is not on the same level as iOS. That being said most of the big hitters are on there. so if you are not an app obsessive you won't even notice. Ever note coming out yesterday filled my last major wanted app.

The Bad:
Far and away my biggest issue with QP7 is the huge gap between core apps and Marketplace apps in terms of performance. This encompasses both start up times, stability, and responsiveness. For some reason 3rd party apps have HUGE performance issues. the scrolling is very juddery in particular and it drives me nuts. This may not bother you though so I encourage you to try it out.

So, to sum up I like it a lot. The ecosystem is not quite there but it is an excellent mobile OS and will only be better when MAngo is out.

PS: Last comment: not to engage anyone's wrath but if you go back in the thread you will see that I have serious issues with the AMOLED screen on the Focus, so I encourage you to check out all of the phones in person if possible.

I just upgraded to a Trophy from Verizon here in the US. I should have the phone on Monday. Can i change the color of the accent when i get it? I am not a fan of the Red in all the pics. Green or Blue tiles would be great.

Yep, I'm a fan of the orange buttons with black background myself. It's in the settings menu, under Themes.

Thanks, is that the one in all the Verizon pics? I just do not care for red. I like orange, but it looks red in the pics. I like the green theme that the Trophy comes with in Europe.

I tested both Craigslist A+ and Craigslist deLUXE with a Live Tile and only Craigslist deLUXE delivered both a toast and a number on the tile. Is Metro browser still the best 3rd party browser? Did i ask already about a weather app, without ads, that uses a live tile?

Is there even an API for 3rd party apps to check the battery level?
I don't think so, I haven't seen any app that does that. I like some apps to realize when the phone is plugged in so there's no need to turn off the display. The apps are so gorgeous, I don't mind leaving the screen on for them. I'm going to want to leave the screen on when Zune gets DJMix in the Mango update. The WP7 teams should seriously consider some sort of Exhibition mode in the update after Mango.

A somewhat related question: are there any docks for the Optimus 7?

Another related question: Can any of the phones with sliders be unlocked, and stay unlocked, when the slider is out?

Not sure if this has been posted:

http://www.chevronwp7.com/post/6629433362/announcing-chevronwp7-labs

As announced on the Windows Phone Dev Podcast, we will soon be launching an approved Windows Phone unlocking service as part of ChevronWP7 Labs. This will be available to developers across all skill levels and all regions.

The service will require a small fee — currently via PayPal — to offset costs but we assure you it will be more affordable than the App Hub.

Good for you redmond

i know someone asked it before, but i forgot if there was an answer:

When in IE and pressing search it takes me to the t-mobile custom google search page. Is it possible to change that to bing?

The wait for Mango is driving me crazy. Having Pandora in the marketplace right now would at least make the wait easier. Slacker isn't too bad, but it isn't too great either.

Yeah same here.

Is the Mango update going to include the option to have custom backgrounds/wallpapers? Instead of the standard black or white?

Would be cool to change to make the tiles translucent too.

Something like this would be cool:

that is sexy

I hope they don't allow users to butcher the beautiful OS like that.
that's why chevronunlock is good. Microsoft stick to sticks to their design vision and lets other 'sophisticated' users mod as they see fit

Yikes ... Reminds me of those custom Windows Mobile and Android home screens. What a mess.

Surfcube browser is pretty cool. It's going to be really awesome when WP7 finally gets the IE9 rendering engine.

Is there a list of all the voice commands, and cool tricks you can do with them, for WP7?

Why are people so against letting others do what they want with their phone? I see this statement in the iOS threads too.

Sometimes others need to save people from themselves. Think of the people you IM who respond with Comic Sans MS as their font. It's those people who ruin it for the rest of us.

I'm honestly all for more advanced homescreen themes:

You could argue that it ruins the consistency across the phone, but having the option there would be great.

Is it just me or does it seem like a sleezeball thing to charge for something like this?

Why?

MS endorsed way of unlocking your phone for a small fee. Probably much easier to keep it unlocked as new updates get released.

Sounds like a good thing to me. It would be interesting to see what they charge for sure though.

Really like the look of this.

Yeah I don't get it..

Were people against a home screen background for iPhone before Apple added it in iOS4?

Because after I've paid for the phone I shouldn't have to pay extra to unlock anything but I'm sure an unofficial version will get released so no big deal.

There will always be other ways. This is a MS supported effort/method of doing that.

And it's the one that won't make your phone in-upgradable.

Yea, to me this is awesome. OS vendor is supporting this kind of work.

Any news on the hardware refresh for WP7? I am still waiting on that for my WP7 purchase.

You're not the only one.

So what? HP/Palm doesn't charge anything to 'unlock' their phones. Neither does Google when rooting Android. Charging a fee is highly unusual to say the least.

What fields does it use to try and automatically link contacts? Name or email? Sometimes gmail and facebook contacts get linked and sometimes they don't and I have to manually link them. Is there a way to replace the names set in gmail contacts with what they have on Facebook?

They never did say when in the year their first phones would come..... its certainly possible they could have one ready for august/september which is only 2-3 months away now.

I just had dinner with a family friend who is a very very high up at Microsoft, and while talking about WP7, and how, to put it in his words, "we are ALL waiting for Nokia", he corrected me when I said 2012. According to him, we should see the first by the end of the "calendar year".

Now, he is no longer directly in charge of the mobile business, so he could be mistaken, but I want to believe! And coming from such a source, it's hard not to :D

edit: as soon as I post that, I see this http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/17/nokia-windows-phones-will-launch-in-six-european-nations-first/ ><

Not sure how I missed it haha.. hype*=infinity;

One thing I'd like are separate notification sounds for each Inbox. Sometimes I'm waiting for a personal email and when I hear the tone, its actually from my other account

When you link a person from your existing contact list to that of a Facebook profile, it will not replace the name of the existing contact with that of the Facebook profile - it will only replace the photo (although you can change the photo back after).

In terms of linking, you can manually do this yourself. Firstly, when you choose to link it will make a recommended matchup, either on name or email. But if the matchup is not what you were looking for, simply select Choose Contact under that and you'll see a list of not only your Facebook contacts but also existing contacts.

Not sure if this is the info you needed. If not can you be more specific
