Sorry, tried Bing search extensively when they rolled Rewards out. It doesn't compare to Google for what I use search engines for - mostly searching technical message boards.

That might matter on the desktop but you typically don't go looking for that stuff on the go.... bing mobile is amazing and does the stuff you want it to on the phone. It is by far the best mobile search out there and nobody is even close to bing on wp7 (and mango does even more).

The local scout, bing audio and video are all best in class and built into the new bing search. Also the way apps will be able to interface with bing search will be very cool once mango is official.

I would agree bing search on the desktop does not seem to be as good as google but the mobile search has very little in common with the desktop version. I still use bing for music, photos and videos searches over google (I find google to be generally lacking in anything but the base text search)

On the Windows Phone podcast last week they talked to the guy who does the ringtones. It was real interesting to hear his take on designing ringtones to match the Metro UI. WP7 has the best ringtones, hands down, of any phone OS. I spent a lot of time on Android and iOS building custom ringtones, but even with Mango, I'm in no rush to port them over to WP7. At some point I'll put them on there, but the ones on the phone are so good and so appropriate to my work environment. I don't have to put my phone on vibrate at work cause the tones are not distracting and are pleasant to listen to.

God Mango is awesome. I haven't been able to put my phone down all day!

Messenger and Facebook chat integration is such a cool feature, I don't know how I lived without. Groups is also an amazing idea.

I'm just generally loving my Windows Phone at the mo.

Showed my phone to the colleagues finally - typical answers from those Android junkies ;)
But they hated my iPhone and now they hate my Windows Phone for no reason. *shrugs*

Those aren't junkies, those are fanboys. I have an iPhone junkie here in the office and I was showing him Mango this morning and he was impressed. There's a lot to like, even if you prefer another platform. Personally, I see Android and iOS having really strong features and competencies that make them both unique and compelling in their own ways. I've used both, and I still keep up with the latest iOS and Android news. If you can't find something to like on each platform, you're a fanboy. Period.

my most typically pro-apple co-worker wants a lot of mango's new features on his iPhone and is happy to admit that they're pretty badass.

Clearly those android guys are fanboys.

It's weird because pretty much every "must have Android" feature they mentioned is on WP7 and sometimes better. It sounds like it comes down to installing your custom whatever modified version of Android and installing apps freely you would normally pay for. I am not judging them, though. I am happy with my choice.

Some folks just have different priorities.

I like Android.. but I love WP 7.

My favorite part about WP7 is the responsiveness and speed. Even though the hardware is old (equal to nexus one from jan. 2010), the OS makes it feel screaming fast.

I never think "man.. I wish I had a faster phone"

Yeah, I love it and hearing that Mango has even faster animations makes me excited. It is still a long wait though and I am really missing HTML5 the most.

i feel silly for even asking this but is there a way to backup your phone via zune or another piece of software? the 'mango for all' programme just seems to skip that part when i try to run it (backs up 0 or 1 file and takes seconds) and i just don't want to carry on the process without a backup.

did Street View make it to Mango Bing?
I can't find it and they didn't mention it in any presentation. The mobile HTML5 site of Bing doesn't work either (that's probably because the IE9 in mango b2 still sends the old IE7/NoDo UA string).

Did you close Zune? It can't back up if Zune is running. Close Zune, wait a bit for it to "release" your phone, then try running the executable.

"Bing is fine"

really?

But Bing is fine! Really!

On iOS and Android.

Zune only backs up media files and apps you installed via the PC marketplace as far as I know. I hope we can have an update where we can backup everything on the phone - including game data

You know what's funny/sad? By the time mango comes out, it's so old for us, we'll wonder when the next update comes out. Kinda like Paul Thurrot, when he started using the Windows Phone 7 beta in July last year and NoDo got delayed. I already want to know what's next. :lol

Does the html5 version of Bing have local scout, vision, audio, and speech to text?

It has local, which is similar to the scout, but without the fancy interface and no, vision and audio isn't there, but it still sucks that iOS gets the better Bing Maps experience.

e: Why are you even mentioning the HTML5 site? There's a Bing app for iOS and even an uber version for the iPad.

At least by that point there may be some hardware to drool over.

I still can't believe how anemic the WP7 hardware selection has been. I'm hoping that changes with the introduction of Mango. Don't let me down Nokia!

Because you mentioned it first?

Plus the final version of Mango will still be an improvement over the beta version some of us are using. Speaking of which, will there be updated beta versions? And will those updates be delivered automatically through Zune for those of us who have the current beta version?

edit: Here's a Mango complaint: the multitasking is limited to like 5 programs, and that's just not enough IMO. Android is 8, that's better. I find myself scrolling through the list and realizing that the app I want to use fell outside the last 5.

VanMardigan said:

Yeah, I did, because I wasn't sure if the mobile site had StreetSide or not. When I mentioned the other platforms, I was referring to the apps, where StreetSide is available (at least on iOS).

Well excuse me, that switch you made between web and app certainly wasn't clear to me, so that's why I asked about the html5 site. In any case, it appears that Bing (with Mango) is still a better app on Windows Phone outside of the Maps. And I'm not downplaying that, since the Android turn-by-turn voice navigation and Google Maps is top notch. I haven't followed iOS' maps situation to see if they've improved that at all, last time I used it there was nothing special about it.

Here's a preview of the iOS app from December.

It even has an earlier version of Bing Vision.

EDIT: Seems like Van had the same question I did and just asked it above! :P

This might be dumb... BUT.... will the beta version of Mango get updated over time or is what we have what we get until the RTM hits?!??!

Only microsoft knows the answer to that question.. and they haven't said. I would suspect that the answer is no updates for beta mango.

Maybe if they update the SDK again they'll push out another mango beta.. but I'm not expecting one.

My zune software is updating? Hmmmm..

You have 4.8 already? Also, I remember you posting a page or two back about your lack of enthusiasm for the platform lately. Any specific reason for that?

No I actually got an error updating, did a google search, and found a post that came up in this thread ironically.

Basically I took you nerds advice and updated to mango....

So wtf do I have to do to get the 4.8 beta or do I just click cancel and not bother with the update?

As for lack of enthusiasm the web browser was getting annoying, and I was personally having a lot of weird issues (like my phone wouldn't connect to my wifi and say I had an incorrect password and then suddenly it would start working again).

Yes, you need the 4.8 beta.

On a side note under the music player (this was both in NoDo and Mango)... you know how it would pull up all the info from zune about the artist and give you the little picture overlay and stuff?

Well that happens with a few of the cds I have on there. The rest don't get anything, and when I try and create a smart dj playlist my phone tells me that it doesn't know the artist. Can I get a W T F!

I think that app will be pretty unsuccessful once mango hits.... they only have a limited amount of time to get people onboard (with the free ad supported app). mango will support 2 of the largest im services out there natively (and for free).... once skype comes on board they will have the biggest 3.

I think the same will happen with shazam with bing getting native music integration.

It's still good for people who use less popular IM services like ICQ (which is still huge in russia, iirc) or AIM.

Not denying that.... but that market is also very small compared to the larger im services (coupled with wp7's already small user base).

Mango doesn't have gtalk built in does it? I'd think that would be decently big. I also still bet aim is bigger than we all think.

Yea. As much as I love mango beta. The full release is allegedly quite a bit larger feature wise so while we will still be looking for our next fix, the full rounded version should satisfy beta users. ^_^

well, we know they're adding twitter in final.. Hopefully some other surprises too.

gtalk or aim would be huge for me, but I'm not holding my breath.

What else is coming in the full release that we don't have right now? Except for Twitter of course.

The biggest change imo won't be the OS itself, but the 3rd party apps. Proper multiplayer, instant messaging, background music playback, background downloads, in-app purchases, you name it.

Okay I've googled around and seems like I've already done what I'm suppose to do BUT...

I can't get FB chat to work... it lets me set my status to online... yet nobody ever appears in my list... even if I check FB.com to make sure there ARE people online...

I'm already linked with FB.com and live.com and resynced all of my accounts... any ideas?

It seems to be a bit all over the place. Sometimes mine works, sometimes it doesn't. I'd try again later.

Just give it some time (few hours) after you linked the accounts and it'll work. That's what happened for me.

Typically, if you right click on an album in Zune and you don't see something like "more info about this album" then it doesn't know anything about it. You can either right click and do find album info or use an external program like Zune social tagger to link things up

I've tried find album info, but that doesn't seem to work. I'll try the social tagger though. Thanks for the tip PG2G!!!

Don't forget multitasking in third party app/games. It's pretty cool that I recieve fbchat or msn messages, but not if I'm in the middle of PvZ and can't sabe my state to answer.
