heh? The Nokia Microsoft press conference is held at Cologne? Where do you get this information?

Won't be there this year Hyper, I'll see you at another GC :) If there are 999's on the showfloor, steal one for me :p

With Mango now in RTM, how soon can we expect release version for none contract phone?

It seems September is pretty solid for next wave of Windows Phone. :D

Most likely as soon as the manufacturers themselves sign off on Mango.

Could be by the end of the month..

I'd love 12mp camera, best possible insides, good music chip, hardware buttons, 5" screen, thin, 32gb plus a memory slot. However makes that (hopefully samsung) that's my dream phone...

Also, this numbers thing is not a good idea...

I remember when they were doing the 4 digit naming policy. I had a 7250i and loved that phone and the shitty pictures it took (unfortunately it got stolen).

A few years ago everyone knew the more famous models:
- The 6310 business phone which made calls, sent text messages and the battery lasted for two weeks.
- The 7110 - the unofficial matrix phone
- The 5210 - rugged phone where you could chuck it out of a 10th floor windows and it would still look and work great
- The 3300 (pre)ngage style music phone

Good times.

nokia microsoft event 8-17, save the date friends.
That event is at the day GamesCom starts, but not on the exhibition side and looks like a press-only party (with lot of booze). So it seems doubtful that they'll announce the Sea Ray at this event. You can win three Xbox 360S with Kinect and three Nokia Windows Phones, but you'll only get the phones when they're available.

I'll be at GamesCom, but only at the weekend. I hope they'll have the phones on display.

Omnia 7 get!

My first smartphone, and damn, it´s so classy and smooth. Turned it off, though, because my SIM card has yet to arrive. But this seems to be a very cool tool. Happy, happy, happy :D

Nice choice and welcome to the WP7 club.

He's not lying, I can't believe that I ever used the phone before Mango. I know that sounds like hyperbole, but the small improvements add up.

Side note: I think I use the task switcher and copy and paste about once a week each. I'm not sure why those are the features that "people can't live without", but I personally like the email threading, linked inboxes, Facebook chat and Twitter integration more. Now to start writting apps to justify paying $100 for a Mango beta.

I have to say, I like being 3/4 of a generation behind. It's awesome knowing that I'll be able to pick up a 2nd-gen Mango device (or possibly 3rd-gen) for a cheap price once my contract expires.

Microsoft has to announce killer apps for the WP7. One of the important function, compared with other mobile OS, is the Xbox Live support. Microsoft has to support more.

Next year will be a lot of fun. Halo 4 etc. And I try to gather a lot of HaloGAF dude. Maybe I'll look into a location for kind of big Halo Lan in cologne. Otherwise I'll be able to speak French :P

Okay that was OT, sorry guys.

is it difficult to put mango on it by yourself? i for one, have no experiencing in upgrading mobile phones etc.
Not at all. You literally just have to run a single batch file (no input required) and then Zune automates you through the update process as usual. It's a bit trickier restoring back to NoDo, but you'll be fine as long as you keep your backup.

Heh.

Update: Well, don't ever say we told you to temper your excitement. We just heard from Nokia itself that this is nothing more than a "local developer event," and to not expect any new devices that we haven't heard of before. But hey, at least the fall edition of CTIA isn't too far out...

Looks like T-Mobile will get a Windows Phone with HSPA+.

Windows Phone 7 fans might want to do a double take at the above image as we have what we believe is the very first piece of evidence that a 4G Windows Phone 7 device is coming to T-Mobile. T-Mobile retail stores often receive display unit stickers, graphics and images well before a phone arrives and in this case we hope a new Windows Phone 7 device is on the horizon. As you can see in the second picture there is clearly a distinguishing difference between the Windows Phone 7 stickers and 4G Windows Phone 7 stickers.

How reliable is this? I'd be interested in going, but it'd cost me about £30 in travel. Is the money guaranteed?

I won't be able to make it... Screenshot function would be the easiest quick fix, if you can request that :)

Went back to NoDo and Zune 4.7 in hope to get the firmware update for my Optimus 7, because it's acting weird lately (Zune with WiFi enabled still kills Zune playback sometimes). Now it says my phone is up to date, ahhh. Fuck. Doing a hard reset now and then I'll go back to mango. Makes me want a 2nd gen device even more. :D

E: I don't remember being able to chose between "recommended" and "custom" during the phone setup. They must have added it in NoDo.

Seems like it would be easy to add just by doing a short or long press on the camera button, depending on how they would prefer the camera application start as I think it should take priority.

Sea Ray not to be in attendance at Gamescom event

Looks like the possibility of Nokia and Microsoft showing off a new Windows Phone at Gamescom is fading with the sunset. We first caught wind of a Nokia/Microsoft event scheduled for August 17, 2011 at Gamescom. With promises of exciting actions and surprises, we all hoped to see the Sea Ray in action.

The Seattle PI has reached out to Nokia and they clarified the event a little. Nick Eaton reporting writes,

"Nokia finally got back to me. Spokeswoman Marianne Holmlund said the event is a local business-to-businesses event organized by Nokia’s Germany arm. “The ‘save the date’ is misleading,” she wrote."

-Have your phone audibly tell you about incoming calls and offer to read your incoming text messages and reply to them with the power of your voice
-Enjoy the new artist background on your lockscreen when music is playing

Umm. How does one go about this?

Go to settings>speech and scroll down to the bottom.. set "Read aloud incoming text messages" to which ever setting you want.. if you set it to "Always" it will say "Incoming Text Message from <Contact Name>.. say Read it or Ignore"

If you say "Read It" it will read it aloud to you and give you the option to reply, call or say you're done.

as for the artist background, it's in settings>lock+wallpaper

And that works for calls, too? I only saw text on it. Thanks for your help.

It will say the name (or number, if it isn't a contact of yours) of the caller, is my understanding.

I know this because someone was complaining about it reading the name of the caller aloud and was worried about other people hearing it.

Is the W7 UI customizable? I might look into it in 19 or so months when its upgrade time again. But I absolutely hate the UI. With a passion. But goddamn is every demo and youtube of the UI I see blazing fast. Android was choppy as shit for a while until recently on some of the newer phones. W7 just glides, it looks to have a shitload of potential.

Yes.. sorta.
You can change between a few colours. If you don't like the UI you aren't going to like it anymore with pink tiles.

Well with time Im sure there will be a way. Especially in a few years, someone always figures out how.

Yeah if you don't like the UI you aren't gonna like the phone. That being said the UI looks waaayy better when it's your own shit on the phone so the Me tile looks like well ME, and the music is the music I've been playing, and the pics my favs, and the contacts my contacts etc... as it makes me personally feel at home.

It's a device that is more customized by your content than just about any other device.

The tiles light up with your contacts and what they're up to, friends photos fill your picture hub along with your own (separated, of course.. so you're free to see just your own if you want)

I fell in love with the UI at first due to the speed. Then I saw the device come alive when I put my contacts and accounts on the device and I started to appreciate the lack of chrome and how the UI tried to get out of my way as much as possible and put my content front and center and finally clarity and readability of the fonts.

The animations still entertain me and I'll have had the phone for a year in november.

It helps that I have zunepass and a 360.. which are two other aspects of the device that really make it a great experience for me.

Showed someone the translator using bing vision. They were wow'd. As was I the first time I stumbled on it...

I changed my mind and applied to that London thing. If I get chosen I will be going with a list :D

e: also not matter what I try I can't get fb chat to work in Mango...
