1. Go to the people hub, tap on the profile with the picture you want to edit, tap on the pen in the application bar (edit) and then tap on the picture. It opens the picture hub and you can select any picture that is stored on your phone.

2. There are no IRC apps out yet, but it's definitely possible with Mango. Microsoft even did a demo in April, at the MIX11 developer conference.

Thanks for 1., and good to hear about 2.. :)

Now about that GPS-app, anyone?

So, I'm thinking about switching from iPhone to a Windows Phone 7. Carrier is At&t, my little brother has one so I'll probably play around with it a bit.

I had a question, if I connected it to my computer (Windows 7 PC) would I have to get a bunch of extra software to get apps, put music on it, etc? I saw a thing about the Zune store in the OP, is that mandatory?

Thanks!

Depending on how well they integrated LIVE into this, it might be worth getting a new Xbox, I'll have to see.

You do need the Zune software to sync music and stuff to your device. If you have wifi at home you can configure wireless sync so that you don't have to plug your phone into your PC every time you want to sync music.

To access the marketplace you'll need a windows live ID. If you have an xbox 360 you most likely already have one of these.

Imo, on windows the zune software is much better than iTunes. Go ahead and download it and give it a try.. you might like it.

You need the Zune software for your Windows Phone, just like you need iTunes for your iPhone. That said, most people find Zune much, much better than iTunes, so download it and give it a try.

e: beaten like iTunes

The main thing about all the apps is Mango is in beta and/or RTM so devs can only now finally start making the apps we all really want and need. I'd fully expect by time Mango gets out to the public we'll start hearing about more complicated apps hitting the market.

The thing people forget is that nodo just lacked a fuck ton of APIs for devs to really even possibly do all that we'd like in terms of apps. If we don't see a better app selection by the end of the year then IDK what the fuck to say...

You don't have to have the zune client though.... you can get apps/music/podcasts directly through the phone w/o the need of the client. the one thing the phone can't directly do yet is get video to your device (sans things like netflix/youtube). To get video on the phone you would need the zune software.

And like the others have said zune is much better than itunes.... its a free program so no harm in trying it out.

How do you get your music collection on your phone without Zune?

brotkasten said:
Yeah, but that's obviously not the same as having your collection or part of your collection on the phone.
true. but it is an alternative

Mango isn't even out and we're already getting leaks/rumors about Tango, haha. Looks like its bringing global search.

oh common. i don't even have a WP7 yet. but still nice to see Microsoft trying so hard.

Seems like an alright program. I probably won't use it much for music, but I'll give it a shot.

My iPhone's screen is damaged, so I'll think about getting the phone when it becomes unbearable. Currently on the fence between google and windows phones.

Are there any cloud storage options with Zune?

Zunepass makes cloud storage unnecessary imo....

I was referring to zunepass as was already stated.... and he was right its not the best option but it is a pretty damn good alternative. You don't HAVE to get zune software to competently use the phone. My brother got wp7 a month after launch and still has yet to install zune on his computer..... he didnt need to put music/videos/podcasts on it. Now he will do it finally when the mango update hits but he even went without nodo this long. Not saying its for everybody but it is very possible since this phone is so tied to the cloud.

Was playing some podcasts today and i found some new behaviour.

When paying a podcast and pressing the next button, it jumps forwards 30 seconds, and press previous button it will jump back ~5 seconds.

With Mango, you could also just put your collection on Google Music or Amazon Cloud Storage and play it from there.

How's the online player in IE9? Is it a mobile player? I don't use Google Music.

I wonder how long it will be before someone decides to put ads on live tiles :P

Though, I guess the ad frameworks wouldn't really support that, for now

any app that does that will be uninstalled

I'll be honest, that sounds like a pretty good idea. I'd hate every app with this feature, but I like the idea.

Ok, I've been away from this thread for a while since I've been using my iPad more and more at my new job rather than my phone.

Seems people have Mango already.... how do I this this?
Part of the reason I stopped using it so extensively is the lack of quick app switching.

I signed up to be a developer at create.msdn.com but there are less...reputable...ways to get your phone to Mango.

Also, the current Mango beta doesn't get to utilize the app switching all that well because you need beta apps to take advantage of it. So you might as well wait for the full release.

I keep forgetting that I have the switching and dump back to start everytime. maybe I'll pick it up with time.

Ah, very true.
Does it have the mall directory feature in Maps?
I'll guess I'll read a list on the other features it was supposed to have again, there were so many.

Is this similar to what iOS apps had to go through to use multi tasking?

All they have to do is change the project to a 7.1 project, compile it and submit it to the marketplace once microsoft allows mango submissions.

Of course, they may need to fix bugs in the app introduced by the new version of the SDK, but MS has said that most developers won't have to write new code to take advantage of fast app switching.

Cool beans, thanks.

Obviously if they want to take advantage of deep linking (linking to certain parts of the app), background agents, etc. they'll need to write new code.. but for simple app switching, they don't.

So what's the opinion on the HTC Surround? I heard a few people complaining about slowdowns in apps and bad touch screens. I'm thinking about picking one up (I posted a page or two back) and all I really need it for is texting, web browsing, music playback, podcasts, and gaming (just Angry Birds and Plants vs Zombies). I don't really think I need a super expensive phone to handle that. I just wanted to know if the slowdowns and faulty touch screens are a widespread problem with the HTC Surround. Thanks if anyone can help. :)

Your needs are about 95% of what I do on my Surround and I have no real complaints. I'd like if it had a better battery, but mine makes it through an entire day with about 7 hours of music and/or radio at work and pretty frequent web browsing. If you can pick it up for a decent price I would certainly give my recommendation.

I just discovered Wikipedia Reader. Easily the best Wikipedia app I've used (on any platform); the Metro guidelines are followed to the letter and it's really smooth both in Mango and NoDo. The free version has advertisements but you can also buy the ad-free version for $1.99. Realy worth the purchase, IMO, if only just to support the developer.

Sorry if that sounds a bit like an advertisement but it's an amazing application that deserves more publicity than it is recieving :)

Rumors are september.. but none of them have been given a release date publicly.

Personally, I want to sell my focus and get the new samsung phone that we saw.. I miss the super amoled plus display from my galaxy s II.

Near dead experience the other day for my Focus. Put the phone in the back pocket of the scrub, the said scrub has a hole in the pocket (hospital issued scrub not mine). The phone bounce off the concrete pavement ... battery go flying in one direction and the phone in another while the back of the phone along with feather case bounce away.

My heart stop as I picked up the phone face down on the pavement with its gut exposed. I fear the worst but the phone only have a slight scruff on the edge (which is protect by skin) and put the battery back in and the cover. Everything boot up and work fine (so far). That feather case may not look like much but it sure save my phone and probably took the brunt of the impact.

May be universe is telling me I need a new phone. : P I need to stop looking at that Dell Venue Pro... need to tell myself Mango is coming, mango is coming ...

yup, free 25gb on windows live skydrive. you can stream your music from there easily.
I wouldn't exactly call it 'easy' :P

I'm surprised at the NoDo adoption numbers, considering how long it took carriers to get Android updates out:

Here's the difference between a 7.0 and 7.1 compiled demo app. Same code, same features, just different target.

Everything he says has an upwards inflection :lol It's not that bad, though.

24% of people still don't have copy and paste? That's pretty bad.

Would suck to be part of that 96% without Mango :P

To be honest, I used copy and paste about 5 times and never again.

For some folks, it isn't a big.deal.

Another interesting tidbit.. With IE 9 in mango, I can highlight spoilers here on GAF with the text selection. Pretty sure that wasn't possible before.

Are you really using the desktop version on your phone?

Just tried it on NoDo, works fine. Unless you're talking about the mobile NeoGAF app, wherein you should actually click the spoiler, not highlight it :P

Yep. I don't usually care for mobile formatted versions.

Ah.. So it does work in nodo.. No, I'm not using the mobile app.

I hate mobile apps.

Dont know but after noDo there was a update for my omnia and yeah it gets into a update loop. So my question is will mango be like a service pack update and will update my omnia 7 without doing that update that gets stuck.

Sorry didn't want to scroll back a lot with all the mango talk going on can't wait for it.

brotkasten said:
But the mobile app of GAF is so much better D:
I hate it. I have to scroll alot more to read things.

Desktop version for me :o

Yeah, I like this better than the mobile app. I might be crazy, but that's me :)

IAWTP

Love how the font automatically gets bigger on WP7 as well. Makes it that much better compared to Android :)
